I sigh as I make my way to Alpha Kayce’s pack. Amelia told me that I never really knew her, that I’d never really understood her as a person Thinking about her now, I know she’s right. I assumed that she wanted the same things that I did. That as my Luna, I would give her total control over the inner workings of the packhouse. I’d lead the pack. I’d protect the pack. She makes sure that everything within the pack is running

smoothly. That’s how my parents did things and that’s how I expected that things would go with us.

Now, looking back, I can see that while my parents cared for each other, they didn’t have the love and devotion that I see among the other Alphas and Lunas in this generation. Even Alpha Lucas and Luna Kinsley have been able to find that kind of love. I guess, like with everything else, I was comfortable with a relationship that was stable and caring. I didn’t need all of the pomp and circumstance that comes with the level of adulating love that I see among the others. And in truth, I didn’t believe it at first. I thought it was all for show, a farce.

I’d known Sophie a bit because of Amelia, knew that the family was devastated when she’d run. Amelia had been as well. But when she found Hunter and I watched the two of them together, I truly thought that they were faking their expansive feelings for each other. But then, she went and got pregnant almost immediately. The other Alphas began finding their mates who also became pregnant almost right away. And one thing remained constant among them. That look, the look that they have when they look at each other. I’ve seen it between Sophie and Hunter, between Robin and Nikki, between Kayce and Allison, and between Dutton and both of his twins. Maybe couple could have faked that, but not all of them.

And now I realize that this is what Amelia wants from me. She wants that kind of love, that kind of passion in her life. I want to give her everything that she wants, but I don’t know how to be that man, how to be the kind of man that she wants and needs in her life.

I pull up to the guard gates, noticing that there are many more guards here than usual.

“Alpha Calvin. We didn’t think you were coming,” the patrol member

says.

“I was delayed, but I’m here now. The Alpha meeting is continuing today, correct?”

“Yes, Alpha. The group is in training at the moment. If you follow this road to the packhouse, you’ll find Alpha Kayce out back with the others,” the patrol member says.

“Thank you.” I look at the patrols guarding the borders.

“Have there been any more sightings of Camden?”

“No, Alpha, but we’re all on high alert because Luna Nikki and the Alpha heir Rory are here in our pack.”

I nod and then begin making my way to the packhouse. I have no doubt that Amelia will be outside sparring. When I met her, she was a good warrior, strong as any Alpha would be. However, since she’s taken over as Alpha of her own pack, she’s lost the softness that she once had on her body. After delivering our daughter, I thought she’d have more softness to her, but it’s been the opposite. My mate has been working hard to become the strongest member of her pack, and it shows. The last time I saw her, she barely had any of the baby weight left on her. The only place she still showed her recent pregnancy had been in her large breasts still filled milk for Athena.
