Chapter 473

When Jacqueline returned, she told me all about the Alpha meeting. I heard it from Alpha Robin and Luna Nikki as well, but it was different hearing it from Jacqueline. As a Beta herself, being part of those meetings isn’t something we’re accustomed to. She came back full of excitement and energy, ready to take on any and all projects that Luna Nikki gives her. Luna Nikki has her days filled with meetings and legal reviews by the next day.

In the evenings, Jacqueline and I will sit and talk. It’s nice and the desire to have someone, to have her, by my side for the rest of my life is only increasing. I’m dreading going to the walkthrough of Alpha Aiden’s old pack today. There will be hundreds of wolves there and the possibility of her finding her fated mate is high.

“I’m nervous Reese,” she says as we walk toward Alpha Aiden’s pack.

“No one will hurt you, Jacqueline. Even if you find your mate, everyone knows that public claimings are banned. Every Alpha and Beta here will protect you. I’ll protect you,” I say to her.

She sighs, looking at the land as we cross the shared border. “Will you be disappointed in me if I tell you that I don’t think I’m ready to compete for an Alpha position?”

I stop and turn to her. “Why would I be disappointed? You’ve been through so much. You’ve already come so far. I think a good leader recognizes their own limitations,” I tell her, making her smile.

“You always know the right thing to say,” she tells me.

“Well, I don’t know about that, but I do know that with you, it’s easy,”

say. I desperately want to kiss her, want to pull her into my arms and ask her to be mine. But I know that part of the reason she’s here today is to see if she finds her mate.

“So, who can I expect to meet today?” she says às we walk through.

“Hmm, let’s see. You know all of the Alphas and Lunas. They’ll all be here, of course. You’ve met Dante, he’ll be here. Alpha Hunter’s new Beta, Penny, is happy in her position, so she’s not fighting for an Alpha position. Jocelyn just took over as Alpha Amelia’s Beta, and she previous declined competing to be an Alpha, so I don’t expect her to be here. Alpha Lucas‘ new Beta is older and basically filling in until Lucas can identify a longer–term choice for Beta. Miles, Alpha Dutton‘ s Beta, should be here, although I don’t see him. Alpha Jake hasn’t taken on a Beta yet, from what I’ve heard, and then there’s me. Oh, and hundreds of others who are interested in becoming Alphas.”

She laughs, like I was hoping that she would.

When we join the group that is already milling around, I watch her carefully, waiting for her nose to go up in the air. When it doesn’t, I

relax.

“Hey, Jacqueline. Hey, Reese. I hear I need to kick your ass for warning this beautiful lady away from me,” Dante says, jogging up.

“Hey, I’m just trying to protect her from the dogs in the pack,” I say good–naturedly. Much like our Alphas, the Betas in the packs all get along. We’re competing against each other, but it’s a respectful

“In that case, I hope you warned her about Gamma Caleb,” he says, nodding his head in the direction of Alpha Amelia who has just arrived with her Gamma.

“Yeah, stay away from him, Jacqueline. He’s bad news. I’m not sure why Alpha Amelia hasn’t stripped him of his title yet. Maybe he hasn’t done anything to outwardly warrant it, but most of the Alphas agree that he’s trying to undermine her,” I say, watching as Caleb sneers, looking around at what he obviously considers unworthy competition.

“He thinks much too highly of himself, that’s for sure,” Dante agrees.

“Stay away from the arrogant Gamma, got it,” she says.

Since Alphas Robin and Kayce are the closest Alphas to Aiden’s old pack, they are the ones leading today’s event. We all stand, watching while they take the stairs and announce that this weekend is a walkthrough of the pack lands and the packhouse. Next weekend, anyone interested in participating in the competition will need to be prepared to spend two full days in the competition.
