“You know I want this pack as much as you do,” Dante says softly.

I look over at him, seeing Jacqueline, who is standing between us, looking back and forth at us like we’re going to start fighting it out any

moment.

“Your Luna wasn’t kidnapped, mine was. Me taking over this pack will ensure that a second border of Alpha Robin’s is secure, therefore adding security to Luna Nikki,” I say.

“I care about her too, Reese.”

“But she’s not your Luna,” I say, looking at him. “What if it were Luna Allison that had been kidnapped?”

I see the understanding in his eyes. “Then I’d make sure I won this pack,” he says.

“And so I will.” I say it without any arrogance. I NEED to do this, for my Alpha and for my Luna, as much as I need to do it for myself.

“You know your Alphas were joking about ‘the best man‘ winning last weekend. Each of your Alphas and your Lunas insisted that their Betas were the best,” Jacqueline says, making both of us smile.

“I am,” Dante and I say at the same them, then all of us laugh.

>Hello, my name is Caleb,” Gamma Caleb says, walking up as everyone

mills around waiting for the guided pack tours to begin.

As if in sync, Dante and I each take a step closer to Jacqueline.

Caleb’s lascivious look shifts to the two of us. “You’re not supposed to be hiding females.”

“They aren’t hiding me. I’m out here in public, aren’t I?” she asks.

“So you are. What’s your name, beautiful?”

“Jacqueline.”

“Jacqueline. You should spend some time with me. I intend to win a pack and maybe you’d like to become my Luna.”

I hear Dante snort. “What round did you get defeated in last time, Caleb?” he asks.

“Did you even make it past the first day?” I add, watching as Caleb’s face turns an ugly puce color.

He bares his teeth and while I feel the tension in me and Dante, we

“When you get bored with these two, come find me,” Caleb says.

“I don’t find either man to be boring. Have a lovely day,” Jacqueline says dismissively as he turns and walks away.

When he’s out of earshot she looks at us. “Wow, you two really don’t like him, do you?”

“He’s a snake,” Dante growls.

“No self–respecting ranked member undermines their Alpha. Our jobs as Betas and Gammas is to support our Alphas and make the pack stronger. Alpha Amelia is a good Alpha from everything I’ve seen. Caleb’s issue with her is that she’s a woman and he doesn’t like taking orders from women,” I say.

“Oh, so he’s not just arrogant. He’s a misogynistic prick,” Jacqueline says, making both Dante and I laugh.

“Exactly. Come on, let’s take a look around,” Dante says and the three of us begin making our way around the pack lands.

We walk the pack lands, and I make note of areas that would need to be strengthened to ensure the pack remained safe, areas that could become treacherous to patrols that will need to be modified, and areas that look like they would be good for pack gatherings.

When we get back, I turn to Jacqueline wanting to know if she wants to return to Alpha Robin’s pack. If so, I’ll walk her back, but I want to get a feel for the pack. I think I’d do better staying here overnight, letting my wolf, Sid, run the perimeter again and see if my visual

assessments were correct.

“I’ve been watching you today. I’ve watched how you assessed the pack’s weaknesses and its strengths. I’m guessing you’re going to sleep here tonight, you and your wolf getting a feel of the land,” she says.

“He does,” she says softly.

I shrug. “Maybe, after next weekend, when I win my pack,” I say smiling and making her smile. “Maybe we could talk about what it would mean if you and I decided to choose each other as mates.”

“I think I’d like that Reese.”

“Me too, Jacqueline.”

“Is it me, or does our Beta seem intent to win this pack?” I ask my mate as we walk back to our pack after the first day of showing the interested contestants around Aiden’s pack lands.
