Chapter 480
“Are you okay, my Beta,” my Luna’s gentle voice asks as her hand squeezes my shoulder.
“If he wasn’t her fated mate, I might have a chance. But I think we all know there’s no fighting the mate bond.”
“Which is why I know that when you do find your mate, you’re going to be so happy that waited,” she says, before stepping away.
The only problem with that is, so many she–wolves killed themselves when they were being hunted. What if my fated mate was one of them. What if she’s gone and I’ll be alone forever?

“How are you feeling, beautiful?” I ask my mate as we drive back from Alpha Ezra’s pack. Since I’ve been working with Margot for years ago, she asked me to come out to Alpha Ezra’s pack to look over some of Zahn’s previous pack members. Many of them had lost their mates and have been in various stages of healing. Now that Brooklyn and I have become a part of Alpha Hunter’s pack, we have the ability to go to all the packs and still have a home base to return to.
However, today we’re on our way to Alpha Aiden’s old pack for the competition. The last two competitions have had injuries that needed attention, but I told Alpha Ezra that I needed one more day before heading over. He and Margot were going to let the others know that Brooklyn and I would arrive mid–morning after the competition had

Because my mate is in the advanced stages of her pregnancy, she couldn’t sleep. So instead of waiting, we got up and I drove to a diner that is in between Alpha Exra’s and Alpha Calvin’s packs. We had an early breakfast and now we’re headed to the competition. The diner was a little out of the way, but I wanted to make sure my mate took it slow this morning and got some food.
“Your daughter is being very active today,” She says, rubbing her stomach. Instinctively, I reach out and put my hand on her stomach. Most mates do this to help soothe the pup and therefore the mother. And I am doing it for that reason too, but I also know that my mate is close to delivery. I want to make sure that she’s not going into labor while we’re out here in the middle of nowhere.
As soon as I touch her stomach, Brooklyn sighs and relaxes back in her seat. “It’s like magic,” she says.
“Daddy magic,” I say. We haven’t had a lot of time to put our nursery together. Instead, we’ve been trying to get around to the packs, checking on the pregnant she–wolves, injured warriors, and people like Jocelyn who needed long–term care so that when my daughter comes, I can spend all my time with her and Brooklyn.

“I think we misnamed her. She’s not calm like a river, she’s untamed like an ocean in a storm. Maybe we should name her Stormy,” my mate says, her eyes closed as she begins to breathe more normally.
“If she’s anything like her mother, River will be a perfect name for her.”

“And what if she’s like her very intelligent father? Would that make her a smart River?”
“Maybe a wise River. But I know that if she’s anything like her
mother, she’ll be a kind and gentle River.” I say smiling at my mate. Brooklyn is a quiet, caring woman and if you didn’t know her well, you might say that’s really all there is to her. But she’s so much more than that. Her level of compassion in the hospital is so incredible and she just seems to have a sixth sense of how to talk to people, how to help them relax, and how to treat injuries with little to no pain.
I’m so excited to have a pup with this woman. Some days I’m still so amazed that she agreed to be mine and that we get to have a family together. She is everything that I’ve ever wanted in life and she and our little pup are my entire life.
“Your ours too,” she says, opening her eyes to smile at me. When she looks back at the road she frowns. “Cas, what is that?
I turn, seeing smoke rising into the air in front of us. “I don’t know.”
I slow down and when we get close enough, I realize that it’s a car that has flipped upside down. The engine is smoking like it was on fire at one point, or maybe it’s going to be on fire soon
I pull over. “Stay here. I’ll check it out,” I say, getting out and rushing over to the car. When I see the person, I turn back to our car.
