The moment I smelled him I knew. Reese and I had been joking with each other, talking about what our life would be like together if he won this pack, talking about us becoming chosen mates. And then, I’d smelled him.
He smelled of eucalyptus and peppermint. The scent soothed something deep inside me and my wolf, Serena, stood up in my head, whining.
I know Reese felt the shift in me just before we heard the possessive snarl that pulled to me in ways that I never thought possible.
Reese turned, instantly ready to protect me. He’d stopped my mate and told him who I was and where I’d come from. I watched fearfully while my mate pulled his wolf back and told me that it’s not allowed to mark and mate anyone forcibly or publicly. Then, he asked to know him. Of course I did..

Somewhere deep down, I knew I was hurting Reese. We’d all but decided to become chosen mates, but my fated mate, Beta Miles, wasn’t here last weekend. He’d stayed behind to look after one of his Lunas, one of the
twins.
I can respect that level of dedication. A Beta should always put their Alpha and Luna first. As a Beta, I understand that, and it was one of the reasons that I felt a pull to Reese. He’s the same way. He’d taken over for Alpha Robin while he searched for Nikki, but he never used that opportunity to overthrow him.
Miles and I ended up spending the entire evening together. He’s a lot like Reese, easy to talk to, easy to trust, and easy to love. While I try to divert the conversation to other things, he expertly returns the conversation back to me. He obviously wants to know everything about me and after he goes

to get both of us something to eat, it occurs to me that I never saw Reese leave us. But looking around now, I don’t see him.
A part of me feels bad about that. But the other part of me, and Serena definitely, is thankful that we waited for our fated mate. There’s a reason you wait for the person that the Moon Goddess created just for you. She isn’t wrong and she knows you better than you know yourself. As much as I adore Reese and hope that we can continue the friendship that we started, the feelings I have for him are nothing compared to the feelings that I have for Miles.
“Tell me more about yourself,” Miles says to me. It’s about the hundredth time he’s said that.
I chuckle, watching him. His focus, his very intense focus, hasn’t deviated from me longer than it took him to get me food and make sure I was eating.
“What else do you want to know?”
“Everything. I want to know everything about you. I want to know about your past, I want to know what you want in your future. I want to know if you’d like to be a Luna or if you’re happy being a Beta. And maybe, more than anything right now, I want to know if you’d agree to letting me kiss you.”
I had agreed and unlike the kisses I’d shared with Reese which had been nice, this was electric and out of this world. I’d gotten lost in the kiss and maybe he had too because at some point, we’d separated and when I looked around it was very dark and very quiet. Everyone had gone to bed.
“You should get some sleep,” I tell him, knowing he’s competing for this pack tomorrow.
“I’d be more comfortable sleeping out here in the woods with you than in

the packhouse, on a bed, alone. Will you lay out here with me?”
I realized that he was right. I knew that I’d sleep better out here with him than I would in the packhouse, in a comfortable bed, alone.
“Yes,” I say and lie down in front of him.
He curls up around me, holding me close to him in an embrace that feels loving and protective rather than smothering.
“Can I ask you something?” he asks.
“Yes.”
“What’s between you and Reese?” he asks. It’s the one question I’d hoped he wouldn’t ask.
I know I have to be honest. If there is any possibility that Miles and I will have the relationship that I hope we’ll have, I have to give him complete honesty.
“We talked about accepting each other as chosen mates.”
I feel Miles go very still behind me.
“That was before I knew that you were my fated mate. You didn’t come last weekend, and I was hoping to find my mate then. When I didn’t … well, Reese and I began to talk about what our lives could be like if we chose each other.”
