“Good for you. Is that why you’re sneaking around out here?” Cash

asks him.

“It wouldn’t do for my Alpha to catch wind that I intend to take her mate’s pack now, would it? And, since I haven’t found my friend, maybe you all would want to help me get that pack.”

“Why would we want to do that?” I ask him.

“Because I can give you information on Jacqueline. That guy she’s with? That’s her fated mate, Beta Miles Booth. His pack just happens to border mine, so I’ll have an inside scoop to what’s going on and I could help you find a time and place to get your mate back.”

“No love for that Beta, eh?” Cash asks.

“They’re all a bunch of know–it–all assholes,” he snarls.

I’m getting the impression that this guy is feeling jilted and that he wants revenge on as many of these ranked members as possible. That could work in my favor.

‘I don’t trust him,‘ Cash says in our mind link.

‘Neither do I, but let’s see what he wants. If he can help us get

Jacqueline back, it might be worth it.‘

It’s not nice to meet him, but I tell him it is anyway. If this guy gets his own pack, he’d be easy to overpower. And if this pack he wants is too far from mine, maybe Cash wants to be an Alpha.

‘I would love that,‘ he says in my mind.

Good, then it’s settled. We get Jacqueline. We help this asshole, then we steal the pack he takes from him. Win–win for us.

Nikki POV

Because we sponsored so many of the packs‘ competitors, our

packhouse is in chaos when we return. People were packing up and leaving to return to their packs. Many had gone back yesterday, but a large majority stayed to see who the next Alpha would be.

My saddest goodbye is with Jacqueline.

“You know we’ll take good care of her, Luna,” Tammi says.

“This isn’t goodbye, Nikki,” Jacqueline says, hugging me. “And if Miles wins a pack like he intends to, then I’ll become a Luna too.”

I nod, holding her tight. “Thank you so much for everything you did for me and Rory.”

She squeezes me tight. “I only did what any good person would do.”

When I pull away, I looked at Miles. “You take care of this woman or so help me goddess, there won’t be enough of you left when I’m done with you for you to answer to anyone else.”

“Yes, Luna. I intend to make Jacqueline as happy as she’s made me.”

“See that you do, Beta.”

We spend most of the afternoon saying goodbye to people, letting them know we’ll be scheduling the next competition in the near future. No one but a select few individuals know that Dutton and the twins are going to get their previous Alpha. We’re not making that common knowledge, especially now that we’re pretty sure that we have a traitor

in our midst.

Once everyone is gone, we still have quite a few individuals in our packhouse. There was a fairly large group of individuals who were interested in looking at Jake’s and Lucas‘ new packs. They’ve watched the competition this weekend and know that Reese is the new Alpha of his pack. They now have three Alphas, and three different packs, that they can choose from.

Since we know that Reese is going to be overwhelmed today after just winning his pack, Robin schedules a meeting with the interested pack members along with the newest Alphas for tomorrow morning. From there, they can tour all three packs, or make their decision and then return with Ezra, collect their things and move to their new pack.

Just before dinnertime, Reese comes walking into the packhouse. Everyone stops and begins cheering for their previous Beta going up to him to congratulate him again.

“It still feels surreal,” he says when he finally gets to me and Robin.

“And I’m guessing it probably will for a while. But you deserve this Reese, and I know you’ll make one hell of an Alpha and an ally.”

Chapter 498

“Speaking of, when do I get to start signing those alliances?” he asks as we sit down with Jake, Letti, Ezra, and Margot.

The rest of the evening, we talk with Reese about things he’ll need to obtain for his new pack and discuss Ezra and Margot’s insights into the individuals interested in looking at a new pack. Lucas and Letti have several thoughts about that since they have a pack that is starting from scratch. Robin and Reese talk about adding to our current patrols and extending the patrols to encompass Reese’s new pack until he has enough pack members to monitor them himself.
