“No,” both me and Alpha Dutton said. I turned and looked at him, knowing his reasons are different than mine. I don’t want her anywhere near that Alpha who wants to claim her. I know all about how Alpha Robin suffered while Camden had Luna Nikki. And I know from my Lunas that she still has nightmares about her time being held hostage.

“If we’re going to catch them, Miles needs to focus. If you’re there, he 11 be too concerned about you to focus on capturing Alpha David and your brother. He could get hurt because his focus isn’t in the right place,” Dutton tells her.

“Miles, if he knows about us …” she begins, looking at me with fear in

her eyes.

“He won’t get a chance to kill me, Jac. He’ll be lucky if he survives two minutes in my presence. But I need to know if you’re okay with me killing your brother. I know he’s an asshole, but he’s your family.”

“He’s no family of mine. I’d rather he didn’t die, but if it comes down to you or him, kill him and come home to me.”

I pulled her to me, kissing her and drawing on her strength. “I will definitely be coming home to you,” I said before leaping and calling to my warriors. Then, we raced out of pack and toward Alpha Reese’s pack lands.

In some ways, I’m glad I didn’t win that pack. If I had, I’m sure Jacqueline and I would have spent our first night there, just like Rees did. It would have put Jacqueline at risk if we’d been there alone. Everything happens for a reason, and I feel better about not winning that pack, even though I really did want to be closer to my Alpha and the other Alphas that I’ve grown close to.

However, this just means that I’ll have to develop a stronger relationship with Alpha Ezra and get to know him better. And most likely Dante. It’s been the Betas in the finals each time and we’re slowly whittling down to the last remaining Betas.

Since I’ve never been this way, it takes me a while to realize that the trio has made its way to Alpha Calvin’s pack. From there, they’ve split up. Unsure of their reasons for coming this way, I go to the borders and howl, shifting and waiting for the patrols to come around.

It doesn’t take them long to get to me, which is a good sign, but they didn’t catch us coming in, which is a bad sign.

“Beta Miles. I’m Alpha Dutton’s Beta and we’ve been tracking several individuals who made their way to this pack and then split up.

“Beta Miles, I just got off the phone with Alpha Amelia. What are you and your warriors doing here?”

“If you talked to Alpha Amelia, then I’m sure you know that we believe that Gamma Caleb has turned traitor and that we’re tracking the Alpha and Beta who are hunting my mate.”

He looks at me, then at the warriors. “And you tracked them here? The traitor that we believe is at least partially responsible for the attempt on my Alpha’s life?”

“We tracked them to about a mile back, then they split up. I came to warn you before contacting my Alpha and letting him know what’s going on.”

“Come on. You all look like you could use a good meal. I’d like to contact Alpha Amelia and fill her in as well, since she’s overseeing our pack while Alpha Calvin is recovering.”

As much as I don’t want to rest, I’ve been running these warriors ragged for over a day. I know the rest will do them and me some good. And it will give me a chance to talk to Jacqueline.

“I was wondering where you were hiding,” Caleb says, sniffing me out.

“I’m not hiding. Well, not from you, anyway.”

“I heard you and Koden split,” he says.

“Probably for the best. He tried to take out Calvin and it didn’t work. They caught his scent and now all the packs are hunting him.”

Caleb isn’t nearly as smart as he thinks he is. But he’s a master when it comes to stirring up shit.

“And who gave Koden the intel to go after Alpha Calvin. I’m guessing they know it was you since you’re out here wandering around alone rather than being back in your pack playing Gamma.”

“Oh, I have much bigger plans now. With Alpha Calvin out of the picture, I intend to take over his pack.”
