“I’ll look after your mate if you look after mine,” I say, feeling better now that I know my Alpha is prepared.

“Call me when the battle’s done,” she says.

I hang up, turning to see my warriors, ready for action.

I feel so out of my league. I had literally just been put into a Betą position when Alpha Calvin was attacked and now, our pack is being attacked. I’ve never run a pack before and never led a battle where a pack was being attacked, but Alpha Calvin made me his Beta for a reason. I know I’m a good fighter, and hopefully, I’m a good leader.

I increased the patrols, but I’m keeping several of them quiet so when we’re attacked, Alpha David’s pack members won’t know that there are more warriors lying in wait. Hopefully, they’ll be moving too quickly to recognize that there are wolves here from other packs as well. I’m so

thankful to have Alpha Robin and Betas Miles and Dante. I wasn’t sure what to expect when, they arrived, but they’ve been really helpful.

I’d been surprised with Alpha Calvin made me his Beta. But afterward, he’d pulled me aside and told me that he needed someone who was strong and that he could trust to run the pack while he works through his issues with Alpha Amelia. I’m young, young enough to still be hopeful to find my mate. But she isn’t in this pack, and I’ve never really had the opportunity to travel to other packs to find her. Now, as a Beta and with Alpha Calvin out of commission for the foreseeable future, I’m not sure when or if I’ll ever find her.

My warriors are spread out around the pack. My omegas, pups, and young mothers are all in safe rooms. When Beta Cash arrives with his warriors, he’ll be met head-on.

I’m in wolf form, standing in front of my warriors, listening. I left music playing in the packhouse so it wasn’t too quiet when Beta Cash arrived. If it were me and the pack was silent, I’d have realized that they knew we were coming. This way, I’m hoping the music distracts them and they think we’re all inside.

The only sound I hear is the sound of the patrols running, their smooth pattern of footfalls pounding against the earth as they run in formation.

‘They’re here, Beta,’ one of the patrols says to me.

‘What are they doing?’ I ask.

‘Spreading out,’ he says.

‘Get ready,’ I announce to the pack, hearing a soft chuff in the distance

as one of my warriors alerts Beta Dante. Others will alert Beta Miles and Alpha Robin as well that the pack is here and about to attack.

I hear the rush of paws, just as our patrols announce the attack. Their howls are mixed with the howls of Alpha David’s pack members who also howl their attack as they cross over our borders.

My own howl of attack mingles with the others’ as our warriors push forward, meeting Alpha David’s warriors head on. It’s obvious that they are startled by the attack, but they are strong fighters, and they adjust quickly. Almost instantly, I’m in the throes of battle and thoughts of everything else falls away.

Somewhere off to my right, I hear a howl of the hunt. I’m not positive, but I’d guess that Alpha Robin just found Camden and has given chase. Off to my left, I hear the snarls and growls of a bitter fight. I assume that Beta Miles has found Beta Cash. Their battle will be a battle to the death. I know Cash isn’t his primary target, but if Miles can kill his Beta, it will weaken Alpha David, making it easier to keep

his mate safe.

I’ve just taken down another warrior when I hear an alert bark. I turn and see Dante’s wolf. He has a wolf facing off with him. The wolf turns, looking to see who Dante alerted.

My wolf, Triton, growls, crouching into a fighting stance. He bares his teeth, his tongue licking out, tasting the air and getting the wolf’s scent. This must be Caleb. He’s the Gamma who betrayed my Luna. She may be an Alpha now, but this pack still considers her their Luna and he betrayed her in the worst possible way, possibly being involved in the attempted murder of my Alpha.
