“Do you have everything you need, Alpha?” Jocelyn asks me. I’m headed back to Robin and Nikki’ s pack to get Calvin. Dr. Caspian said he’s stable enough for me to bring home. However, because of the previous attack on him and now knowing that Koden is after me, I’m leaving Athena with Jocelyn. I don’t intend to be gone too long, and I’m taking warriors with me, but I’d rather be safe.

I also know that Dutton is leaving in two days, and I want to be back before then. It’s not that I don’t think that Miles and Jacqueline can run the pack in his absence and keep their pack safe. but with Alpha David after Jacqueline and Koden after me. I’d feel better about having the full support of my pack behind me. Being out on the road, especially a slow-moving van like the one that will be transporting Calvin, leaves me open to attack.

I don’t know if Koden and Alpha David know each other, but after Caleb worked with Camden and Koden, I’m not taking any chances. I hold my daughter to me, taking deep breaths of her

scent.

“Yeah, I’m good. I hate leaving her, but I have to make sure that Calvin remains safe on his way here.”

“Of course, Alpha. Just let me know when you arrive and that you are safe. I can always put you on speaker phone and put the phone beside Athena if she becomes too fussy tonight,” she says.

I hand my daughter to her, watching as she tucks her against her body while she sleeps.

“You’d make an excellent mother if you ever change your mind about taking a mate.” I tell her

She looks at me and scowls. “Yeah, but if they KNOW they’re the sperm donor, then they may decide they have some rights to my pup. Like you said, I have time, but I do know that I want my own pup someday.”

“Call me if you need anything at all,” I say, pressing one more kiss to Athena’s forehead before turning to get in the van. I’m surrounded by my warriors who will shift and run in wolf form. I’ve also sent scouts ahead to check the roads and make sure they don’t smell anything off.

“Everyone ready?” I ask.

“Yes, Alpha,” they say and begin stripping, putting their clothes in a bag and tossing them into

the van.

“Let’s move out!” I say, getting in the van as they shift and waving goodbye to Jocelyn. Driving will take longer than it would to run in wolf form, but it’s necessary since I can’t get Calvin home any other way. I’ll have to go around the packs to get to Robin and Nikki’s pack which means that I’ll end up on the same road where Calvin was attacked the first time.

As we pull out of our pack lands, my first set of warriors takes off ahead of me, searching the area and sniffing the air to make sure that they don’t smell anything off. We’re just about to the end of my territory when I hear howls from Lucas and Kinsley’s pack.

‘Alpha, it looks like Alpha Lucas sent some patrols to help ensure your safety,’ one of my warriors

says.

I roll down my window and howl a thank you to the patrols. It makes me feel a bit safer knowing that we have extra eyes, ears, and noses, at least for this part of the trip.

However, after we pass Lucas’ pack, I realize that his patrols continue to provide additional protection to my patrols. That is until another group of howls starts ahead of us. I watch as Hunter’s patrols take over for Lucas’, surrounding my van while Lucas’ patrols return home. Once again, as I pass Hunter’s pack, I open the window and howl a thank you to my sister and her mate for sending patrols to watch over me. I’m surprised yet again when, after I pass Hunter’s pack. I feel the sting of tears, so touched that the packs helped to look after me while I made my way here. I didn’t ask them to do it, but they knew about Calvin, and they knew I was coming today, so they must have planned it amongst themselves.

Rather than going straight to the pack hospital as I planned, I stop at the packhouse.

“You had safe travels, I assume?” Nikki asks, walking out to greet me with Rory in her arms.

“Did you know that the packs planned to provide extra protection on my drive here?” I ask her.

“Of course. You didn’t think we were going to risk another Alpha getting blown up, did you? Or worse, give Koden an opportunity to snatch you? No way! You’ll have the same when you return home as well.”

She looks past me at my warriors who are getting dressed. They ran the entire way and while we had assistance, they haven’t had a break.

“I’ve got food inside and rooms ready for all of you,” Nikki says, and the warriors all turn to head inside, thanking her as they pass. Then she turns back to me.

“I assume you want to go see Calvin. Come on, I’ll walk over there with you.”

She comes down the steps and I look at Rory who is starting to become more alert. He makes one of those sweet baby coos then looks surprised at the noise he made.

“What was that, baby boy?” Nikki asks him, taking his little fist and pulling it to her lips for a

kiss.

“How’s he doing?” I ask as we walk to the pack hospital.

“He’s good. Dr. Caspian says he’s progressing normally, which I was concerned about considering

how he came into this world. But he’s all Alpha and he’s bounced back like a champ. Haven’t you, my baby boy?” she says, cooing the last part at her son. He makes another happy sound, looking surprised again at the sound coming out of his mouth.

“Athena is sitting up on her own now. I expect that she’ll be crawling any minute,” I say, already missing my daughter so much.

“She’s another one who is all Alpha. I wouldn’t be surprised if that little girl skips crawling and walking and goes straight to running.”

“Do not put that into the universe.” I say, laughing. “I’m run ragged enough without chasing after my daughter.”

“I’m just saying, these Alpha pups are fast learners and developers. The last time I talked to Sophie, little Hunt was already rocking on his hands and knees. It won’t take long for him to move a hand and realize he can be mobile.”

“Yeah, they’re close in age. It won’t be long for either of them,” I say as we walk into the pack hospital.

“Hi, Lucy.” Nikki says to the nurse at the front. “You know Alpha Amelia, right?”

“Yes, Luna. Welcome back, Alpha,” she says.

“Thank you, Lucy.”

“I’ll take you back. I came by to see Calvin this morning already. He’s about the same as you might imagine, but Dr. Caspian will give you the update.”

“Thanks, Nikki,” I say, as she opens the door to Calvin’s room. I feel the wave of anguish roll over me just like it did before. I was hoping that he’d look more like his normal self, but instead, he almost looks paler and more fragile. He looks like a shell of the man I know.

“I’ll go let Dr. Caspian know you’re here.” Nikki says, squeezing my shoulder and stepping out of

the room.

I go to the bed, carefully taking Calvin’s hand in mine

“Hey, Calvin It’s me, Amelia. I’m here,” I say, leaning over to press a kiss to his forehead. “I’m going to move you to my pack so I can spend more time with you. It’s too hard going back and forth right now.”

I have no idea if he can hear me, but if he can. I don’t want him to know about Koden. He needs to focus on getting healthy, not worrying about me.

I begin telling him about Athena and all the funny things she’s doing. It isn’t very long before there’s a knock at the door and Dr. Caspian comes in.

“Good afternoon, Alpha.”

“Hi. Dr. Caspian. How’s our patient?”

“He’s healing. It’s slow, but he is healing. I’m going to continue to keep him sedated for now, but I’ve been able to remove some of the metal pins from his legs as you can probably tell. I’ve replaced those with plaster casts that will stay on until his bones are completely healed. If his wolf starts to heal, it shouldn’t take as long as a human and I’m encouraged that I’ve been able to remove as many pins as I have.”

“What about moving him? Is that going to jeopardize the pins that he still has in his legs?” I ask.

“No. I’ll make sure that I have him as immobilized as possible and I’ll be sitting in the back of the
