Those fucking bastards. I’d been waiting for Amelia to bring Calvin home so I could snatch her up and the packs basically gave her an escort to and from her pack. It was going to be hard for me to get to her without them helping her, but with them, it was impossible. So, I’m back to watching her from the back side of her pack. I look at him, watching him as he waits me out.

I smile, watching him as I leap down from the tree where I’ve been sitting for hours. The landing stings as the blood begins rushing through my butt and legs again, but I don’t flinch

“I think you’re got yourself a Beta.”

“I’ll be in touch every day, one way or the other. If not me, it’ll be Tiffany. I’m hoping this will be quick and easy, but I can’t be sure of that.” Dutton says as I sit across from him in his office.

“You know I’ll handle everything while you’re gone.” I tell him.

“I do. That’s the only reason I feel comfortable leaving. It’s too bad that you can’t come with me and stake out the packs in the area, get a head start on which ones you might want,” he says, smiling.

“It sucks that it will be so far away, but I love the ideas that are floating around now about incorporating those packs into this larger group. I’ll still be far away, but it won’t be as far by wolf,” I say.

I feel my throat getting tight. I hadn’t expected to have this conversation. It never occurred to me that my Alpha might not return. But he’s right. If I were going into this situation, if there was a risk that I would die, I would want someone that I trust to tell me that they would look after Jacqueline and my pup for me.

“You know I will,” I say, my voice gruff with emotion.

He nods and looks down, struggling with his own emotions. “You know my mates are different, so very different. But if I’m gone. I would want them to find happiness again, together or separate, I want them to be happy. And I’m trusting you, if the worst happens to me and my mates find someone else, make sure you trust their new mates to take care of my pups.”

I go in search of my mate, needing to feel her strength. When I find her, I don’t say a word. I just pull her to me, burying my face in her neck.
