Chapter 214
–Kaia–
The cold woke me.
My body was shivering, and cold sweat broke out on my forehead. I was burning hot.

I wrapped my arms around myself and sat up slowly, dizzy from fever and whatever Silas did to me earlier.
My head throbbed, and my ribs ached painfully.
I closed my eyes, trying to let the pain seep through. And for a moment, everything was quiet.
I pushed myself toward the wall, listening for footsteps, voices, anything. Hoping they’d show up, and I’d ask for help.
But the hallway outside my cell was still and empty. It felt as if I had been abandoned in this place alone, and my heart jumped.
Something was wrong.
I could feel it. As the suffocating tension filled the place, my heartbeat sped up.
“What now…” I whispered, rubbing the side of my head.
Before I could finish my thoughts, I heard a faint sound from the rooms on the other side.
Like metal scraping, followed by a choked breath.
I froze.
Soon, I heard another slash. It was sharper this time.
It sounded like flesh against something heavy.
I heard someone let out a grunt of pain.
My skin prickled. Someone was being hurt.
I crawled closer to the bars, pressing my ear against them, trying to catch more.
I heard Tarick’s voice; that bastard was having fun, hurting some people, and I couldn’t tell who it was.
Whatever Silas did to me seemed to weaken my senses, and I could barely smell anyone.
Suddenly, I heard someone.
A voice I would recognise anywhere, strangled and in pain.

Theo, my heart stopped.
“No! No!” I shook my head, trying to convince myself. “That can’t be true”
I pressed harder against the bars, my breath shaking.
And then it came again, broken and forcefully dragged out of him.
My lungs collapsed, and my vision blurred.
“Theo?” My voice cracked, barely a whisper. “Theo-? No, how come?”
He wasn’t supposed to be here.
He promised he’d stay safe, but how come he was here?
A muffled curse rang out from him, and my heart broke.
Theo sounds defiant and strained.
I slammed my palms against the bars.

“Theo!” I screamed, voice ripping out of me. “Theo, I’m here! I’m here-Please stop hurting him”
A shock ripped through the bars instantly, knocking me backwards.
I hit the ground hard, my breath punched out of me. My hands burned from the current, trembling violently.
A guard down the hall barked, “Shut up, girl! I will trash you if you don’t shut up right now”
But I couldn’t stop shaking, and my tears flowed profusely.
Theo was here, and it was all my fault.
And now they were hurting him because of me.
“No,” I whispered, dragging myself up despite the pain. “Theo… why did you come? Why didn’t you stay away?”
Another scream tore through the walls. Not as loud as before, more of a stifled, guttural gruff, but it cut me to pieces.
My vision blurred with tears.
I pressed both hands to the metal again, ignoring the fear of another shock.
“Let him go!” I sobbed. “Let him go, hurt me instead, just leave him alone!”
But nobody answered, and the hallway remained silent.
I sank slowly to the floor, trembling uncontrollably, clutching my stomach as if shielding the baby would

My pulse raced so fast it hurt. Something inside me twisted, tightening with each one of Theo’s squeals.
A heat crawled through my veins, and a low thrum vibrated beneath my skin.
My vision shimmered at the edges.
I shook my head, trying to flag it away.
“No… not now…”
But it grew stronger. With every scream from Theo, the heat inside me rose wild.
And something inside me snapped, and I looked at my trembling hands.
“No,” I whispered, terrified. “Please… not this…not now…”
And then, Theo screamed again.
Before I could stop myself, something snapped, and my eyes flashed, as if something woke up.
An invisible pressure is closing around my ribs, tightening, and squeezing life out of me.
I rubbed my arms, trying to shake the sensation off, but it only grew stronger.
The air in my cell shimmered, and I tried to blink it away.
What is happening?
My pulse jumped, racing so fast it hurt.

Sparks and tiny, dangerous blue pinpricks were dancing over my skin. It felt as if I was going rogue and losing my mind.
I gasped and stumbled backwards.
“What-what is happening to me?”
My heartbeat thrashed harder. It felt as if the cell was tightening around me, and I was getting crushed.
And then, crack!
