Chapter 10
“No need to thank me. Did he say anything else?” Susie’s mind was racing, but her face stayed sweet and composed.
“How did you know he had more to tell me?” Magnus grinned as he pulled a delicate cake box from the passenger seat, handing it to her along with a ribbon.
“Boss specially asked me to deliver this gift,” he added.
Susie rarely touched sweets, especially cake, since she was careful about her figure.
But the cake’s logo was from Sweetie, a prestigious brand adored by heiresses from top families. Their cakes were limited editions released daily, expensive, and hard to get, even if one had money.
“Thank you. This is actually my favorite cake,” she said, beaming as she took the box.
“Boss also wanted me to ask if you two could stay in contact.” Magnus’s tone shifted suddenly from playful to serious.
Only then did Susie notice a small white card with gilded edges tucked inside the box. She opened it and saw a handwritten phone number signed with a bold, stylish Thole.
Her heart pounded wildly. “The head of the Four Great Families, the Thole family?’ she thought.
Whoever Boss was in the Thole family, his power and status were far above the Baker family.
“Yes, I can,” she answered shyly, glowing with excitement.
“Alright. I’ll let Boss know. I won’t keep you.” Magnus said, turning to get back in the car and drive away.
Susie stared at the cake box, feeling delighted.
The ribbon in her other hand bore an embroidered pattern that looked vaguely familiar, but she couldn’t place it. Shrugging, she tossed the ribbon into the trash.
‘Whoever it belongs to doesn’t matter. The mysterious big shot now sees me as his lifesaver,’ Susie thought happily.

After leaving the Scott residence, Magnus immediately called Barnaby. “Boss, as you ordered, I delivered both the ribbon and the cake to her.”
“How did she react?” Barnaby asked.
“She was very happy. Said Sweetie’s cake is her favorite. She also said she’d keep in touch.” Magnus teased on the phone, “Boss, you better be careful. She looks so young.”
On the other end, Barnaby’s handsome brows furrowed slightly.
He recalled the girl’s shocked reaction when she heard him call her name on the mountain, and how she fled in panic.
Because of that extreme reaction, Barnaby hadn’t dared to approach her directly, sending Magnus to scout first instead.
He hadn’t expected someone to rush headlong into trouble like this.
“You’ve got the wrong person,” Barnaby said quietly but firmly.
At that moment, his black Audi pulled through the gates of Cavalor International School and headed toward the faculty building, where a stretched Lincoln was parked.
“What?” Magnus teased, still amused. “No way, she told me she saw me on the mountain that day. Oh no, shit.”
He reviewed his conversation with Susie and realized he’d been too impatient to notice the inconsistencies.
“I’ll turn back right now,” he said, looking for a spot to make a U-turn.
“No need,” Barnaby ended the call, his gaze fixed on the girl stepping out of the Lincoln’s back seat.
She wore a fitted white dress, her long hair braided into a thick plait. Her delicate profile showed no emotion, giving off an icy, untouchable vibe.
“Barnaby, we’ve arrived,” his assistant Ronin Vale announced as he parked the car.
Barnaby said nothing.
Ronin got out and respectfully opened the back door. Barnaby remained still.
Ronin glanced down at Barnaby, puzzled, but Barnaby’s eyes stayed locked on the other side of the window.
Outside, by the main entrance of the school, a man in formal attire was leading a girl in a dress inside.
‘A girl?’ Ronin thought, eyes sparkling with disbelief. ‘Boss actually noticed a woman?’
