The Real Heiress Is Coming Back (Hannah Carter) novel Chapter 132

Chapter 132

Chapter 132

“Huh?

“Me and Arthur? Close? Since when?

Isn’t Arthur the one who’s always trying to get close to me? he thought

Barnaby noticed Hannah’s tone was off, so he asked, confused, “Why? You think I’m gonna bully him or something?”

“You know full well.” Hannah replied coolly.

Barnaby looked genuinely puzzled.

He thought about how Arthur always seemed to block him whenever he tried to talk to Hannah, his brows furrowing He glanced over at Hannah on the other side of the pool.

Steam swirled around her face, making it hard to read her expression, but he could feel the icy distance radiating from her.

She’d been acting like this all morning, and now it was the same. Ever since she got the ginseng, she’d been deliberately keeping her distance from him.

Is it because she found out I’m the Master of the Scepter House?’ Barnaby wondered.

‘No way, that’s not it. If she knew who I really was and I kept teasing her, she’d totally blow up at me, not just sit there brooding and giving me the silent treatment,’ he thought.

‘Or is it because of what she said before? That once she cured me, we’d be done with each other?’ he wondered.

‘But after all this time, doesn’t she get how I feel about her?’ he thought.

Barnaby’s gaze darkened as he stood up and walked over to Hannah.

“You’ve been avoiding me lately,” Barnaby said.

Hannah watched as he strode over, steam curling around his body. His tall, sculpted frame glistened with water, and honestly, he looked dangerously hot.

For a moment, she totally understood the Master of the Scepter House’s weird obsession, with a body like his, she kinda wanted to claim him for herself too.

“Did I mess up? Are you mad at me?” Barnaby asked.

Barnaby stopped right in front of Hannah, finally able to see her face clearly.

She looked so cold and untouchable, like a rare flower growing on a cliff, totally out of reach.

He was way too close. Hannah tried to move away, but Barnaby wouldn’t let her. He leaned in, bracing his arms on either side of her against the edge of the pool, trapping her between them.

His insanely handsome face was now just inches from hers.

He was always doing things that made her wonder if he was flirting with her, subtle gestures that left her confused.

‘Just because he’s into guys, does that mean he can act however he wants around me?’ Hannah thought, feeling annoyed.

‘So annoying, Hannah muttered inwardly.

“Think for yourself. Hannah said coldly.

Barnaby saw the irritation flicker across her face. After a moment, he asked, “Is it because I wasn’t honest with you?”

“Well, well” Hannah let out a cold laugh, looking up at him.

“Well, well?” Barnaby raised an eyebrow, catching the edge in her tone.

“So you really have been hiding things from me,” Hannah remarked, her smile all sugar and no warmth.

Barnaby was at a loss for words.

Hannah almost never smiled, but when she did, it was her signature death-smile, cold, dangerous, and never a good sign.

He suddenly realized that if Hannah ever found out he was the Master of the Scepter House, it wouldn’t just be a little anger, she’d 100% drop him like a hot potato.

‘No way am I letting her find out,’ he thought.

“Actually, when you came looking for me last time, I was up in the mountains working on acupuncture needles, but I told you I was just working late at the office,” Barnaby confessed.

Hannah just stared at him, lost for words.

Sure, that was kind of touching, but she was pretty sure this wasn’t the lie he’d been hinting at before.

Barnaby saw her keeping quiet and shot back, “Come to think of it, haven’t you been keeping things from me too?

“You’re a total genius, but you pretend to be a slacker.”

“I’m not pretending,” Hannah retorted.

From the very first school entrance exam, she’d shown what she could do, people just refused to believe her. Eventually, she just stopped bothering to explain herself. And in the process, she even helped out the Croft family.

“So, aren’t you gonna tell me how you went from spending eleven years up in the mountains to suddenly being the top student?” Barnaby asked.

He’d figured out a long time ago that Hannah was just pretending to be a slacker, but he’d kept quiet, hoping she’d fess up herself one day.

But even after she got her direct admission, she hadn’t even bothered to mention it to him.

Hannah just went silent, her eyes darting away awkwardly.

Barnaby caught the way she dropped her gaze, those long lashes hiding her eyes. Whenever she did that, it meant she was either dodging the question or about to spin another story.

He reached out with his left hand, gripping her chin and forcing her to look him in the eye.

“And while you’re at it, care to explain where you got the cash for those cufflinks you bought me, hmm?” Barnaby added, not letting up.

Hannah just looked at him for a while, then finally replied, “Oh.”

“Oh?” Barnaby raised an eyebrow. “That’s all?”

There was a whole lot more behind it, but Hannah had zero intention of explaining. Her lips pressed into a thin line, and she kept quiet.

Suddenly, Hannah realized the tables had turned.

“Wait, wasn’t I supposed to be the one asking the questions here? How did he end up putting me on the spor?’ she thought, totally caught off guard.

Barnaby watched as her cheeks turned pink in the swirling steam, her lips pressed together in stubborn defiance. For some reason, it just made him want to kiss her senseless and make her his.

Hannah caught the look in Barnaby’s eyes, they were intense, almost smoldering, with a definite hint of desire.

Wait, what’s going on here? Hannah thought, totally thrown off.

‘Isn’t he supposed to be into guys?’ she thought, seriously confused.

Her gaze drifted to his lips, and a wild idea suddenly popped into her mind.

She leaned in, moving closer to his lips.

Barnaby froze, completely caught off guard, he never expected Hannah to be so bold. For a split second, his heart nearly skipped a beat, but he quickly got a grip on himself.

Hannah was still underage, and he was afraid he might lose control and cross a line.

With that thought, he released her chin, resting his hand on her shoulder to stop her before things went any further.

Hannah stared at his insanely handsome face, just inches away, and it was like she’d been struck by lightning, her whole body went stiff.

‘He actually turned me down!’ Hannah thought, totally stunned.

‘He really is into guys!’ she thought, her mind spinning.

“Let go of my sister!” a voice suddenly shouted.

Arthur doubled back and, from a distance, saw exactly what was happening.

‘Holy shit!’ Arthur thought, eyes wide in disbelief.

‘Good thing I got here when I did. That old creep Barnaby really is trying to make a move on my sister!’ he fumed.

He rushed over, leapt straight into the hot spring, and threw himself between them, forcing them apart.

Arthur shot Barnaby a death glare, then turned to check on Hannah, worried Barnaby might’ve crossed the line. But when he saw her, she looked totally out of it, her face not looking so great.

“Hey, you alright?” Arthur asked, sounding genuinely concerned.

Hannah snapped out of it. “Yeah, I’m fine.”

“You don’t look so good,” Arthur said, frowning.

“Guess I stayed in the hot spring too long. I’ll go up first,” Hannah said, her voice a little shaky.

With that, she turned and climbed out of the pool, forgetting to grab her bathrobe as she hurried straight back to the house.

Only then did Barnaby notice how pale she looked. ‘Did she get the wrong idea because I stopped her?’ he thought, suddenly

worried.

Arthur watched her hurry off, getting even more anxious. ‘Isn’t it supposed to make your face all red after soaking in the hot

spring? But Hannah looks totally pale,’ he thought, frowning.

“Barnaby, seriously, can you just act like a decent human being? My sister’s still a minor!” Arthur snapped, his teeth clenched in anger.

Barnaby felt totally wronged. He’d only stopped Hannah because she was still underage, but now it looked like she’d totally

misunderstood him.

Back in her room, Hannah splashed cold water on her face in the bathroom, trying to snap herself out of it.

She honestly had no idea what was wrong with her. She knew Barnaby was into guys, had already told herself to just treat him like a regular friend, so why did she have to go and push her luck like that?

‘Nice going, Hannah. Humiliating yourself for no reason,’ she thought, cringing inside.
