Chapter 138

Lauren’s eyes went wide as a bad feeling crept over her.

‘So, if Hannah’s right, Gemma hid the truth about Yvette and her mom’s deaths from me, and now she called me over just to frame me for it?’ Lauren thought, her heart pounding.

“This is a capital crime! Even a tiger wouldn’t eat its own cubs. How could Gemma possibly do something like that?’ Lauren’s mind raced.

‘Sure, Gemma’s never really liked me, but I’m still her daughter!’ Lauren thought, her chest tightening.

‘No, this can’t be true. Hannah must be trying to drive a wedge between us!’ Lauren told herself, refusing to believe it.

Lauren quickly hid her shock and snapped, “Quit talking crap and stirring up trouble! Keep an eye on her!” She barked the last part at the scarred man.

Without another word, she clicked away in her heels, leaving the room.

The scarred man quickly slammed the wooden door shut and locked it tight.

As soon as the door slammed shut, Hannah breathed out in relief and slumped to the floor, her strength completely drained.

After a while, she reached into her inner pocket and fished out a packet of tiny black pills.

She tore it open, tossed the pills into her mouth, and swallowed them dry. Then she shut her eyes, gathering her strength.

Outside the shed.

The scarred man hurried to catch up with Lauren.

“My Lady, Mrs. Baker wants you to finish her off,” he said, making a throat-slitting gesture.

Lauren stiffened in shock. ‘Wait, does she really want me to kill Hannah?’

‘I’ve never even killed a chicken, and now Gemma wants me to kill someone? Lauren’s hands trembled.

‘Is she really my mom, or what?’ Lauren thought, feeling totally betrayed.

.Lauren’s mind spun. Just how much has Gemma been keeping from me?’

“Mrs. Baker said once you get this done, she’ll bump you up to CFO. That’s a hell of a promotion, so don’t drag your feet,” the scarred man said, lighting a cigarette and urging her on.

Lauren caught the laid-back way he said it, like he was just telling her to pick up the pace, not asking her to commit murder.

‘How many people has he iced to be this stone-cold?’ Lauren wondered, shivering.

She shivered and said, “I need to talk it over with my mom first.”

With that, she boarded her private jet.

Three and a half hours later.

At Baker Villa, Gemma was in the middle of a home-visit spa session at her place when the door suddenly flew open, startling the spa lady.

“Back so soon?” Gemma looked up, her brows knitting together when she saw Lauren walk in.

“Why did you lie to me?” Lauren demanded, her eyes rimmed red and her voice trembling with anger.

On her way back, Lauren had tracked down several people to confirm it, Yvette and her mother really were dead.

‘Gemma sure knows how to keep secrets from me, Lauren thought bitterly.

“What are you talking about?” Gemma sat up, wrapped in a towel, and waved the spa lady out.

Once they were alone, Lauren didn’t hold back.

“Yvette and her mother are dead! You lied to me, said they’d run away, and made me go after the people who supposedly helped them escape!” Lauren shouted, her voice shaking with anger.

Gemma’s face darkened. “Who told you that?”

When Gemma didn’t deny it, Lauren’s heart twisted. Tears threatened to spill as she blurted out, barely holding them back,

“That’s not even the point. What I really want to know is, were you trying to pin this on me? Make me your scapegoat?” Lauren said.

She kept telling herself not to let Hannah mess with her head, but in the end, she just couldn’t stop herself from coming here to get the truth straight from Gemma.

If Gemma had just denied it, Lauren would’ve hopped right back on her jet and gone straight to that crappy shed to deal with Hannah herself.

But Gemma didn’t say a word.

She just sat there in silence.

Lauren’s tears finally broke free, streaming down her cheeks.

“Sweetheart,” Gemma said, getting up from the bed and coming over. For once, she was actually gentle, cupping Lauren’s face and wiping away her tears.

“I wish I didn’t have to ask you, but for the Baker family, you’ll have to take one for the team,” Gemma said, her voice soft but unyielding.

‘Take one for the team, huh? That’s all I am to her,’ Lauren thought, the words echoing emptily in her mind.

Same old, bossy tone. No room for discussion, no way out.

“This isn’t just some trivial thing, it’s a death sentence!

‘It’s not like she’s just asking me to quit piano and pick accounting instead. This is life and death!,

‘Just how could she drop something like that so easily?

‘Was I really born into the Baker family just to be their tool, always at their beck and call?’ Lauren thought, her heart sinking.

Lauren had a million things she wanted to say, but staring at Gemma’s sharp, unforgiving look, not a single word would

come out.

Tears streamed down, soaking her shirt, and her heart felt colder than ever.

“Come on, don’t cry. It’s nothing, really. Just go do what needs to be done. Your sister and I will keep you safe,” Gemma soothed, her voice soft as she patiently dabbed Lauren’s tears away with a tissue.

Lauren stared at her, stunned. For a moment, Gemma seemed like the gentle mother she’d always craved, drawing her in with the warmth she’d been desperate for.

But what lay ahead was a bottomless abyss.

Just then, there was a knock at the door. The butler’s voice drifted in, “Mrs. Baker, Mr. Chandler is here.”

“Let him in,” Gemma said, giving Lauren’s shoulder a gentle pat, signaling her to pull herself together.

As the door swung open, Lauren immediately turned away, making sure no one could see her tear-streaked face.

“Mrs. Baker, I wiped everything off the memory card,” Elliot Chandler said.

‘Memory card?’ Lauren blinked, her mind racing.

She shifted just enough to see Elliot hand Gemma a memory card tucked inside a little white envelope.

That was from an old phone.

She remembered now, last night, right before Gemma sent her to Linxire, someone dropped it off, saying they found it in the woods.

“Good work. You can go now,” Gemma said, taking the memory card.

Once Elliot left, Gemma took out the memory card, glanced around to make sure no one was watching, scoffed, and casually tossed it into the trash. Then she called the spa lady back in to finish her treatment.

Gemma saw Lauren had stopped crying and said offhandedly, “Any questions? If not, get going. When you’re back, we’ll get pampered together.”

Lauren gave Gemma a long, complicated look as she lay there on the bed. After what felt like forever, she finally mumbled, “Yeah.”

Right before heading out, Lauren casually swung by the trash can. By the time she walked out, the memory card was hidden in her hand.

Meanwhile, back at the shed.

After popping those little black pills, Hannah zoned out for a couple hours. When she finally came to, her head wasn’t .pounding so much, she wasn’t drenched in cold sweat anymore, and her fever had gone down, well, at least a little.

Her mouth felt like sandpaper, and she could drink a whole lake dry. Her stomach was rumbling, too. ‘Man, I could eat a horse right now, she thought.

Just then, Hannah heard some noise outside, followed by the sound of a key turning in the lock. She quickly slumped back down, feigning helplessness, making sure she looked just as bound as before,

The door swung open, and in walked a weasel-faced guy with buck teeth. Hannah recognized him instantly, he was the one who’d knocked her out last night.

Once he was inside, he made sure to leave the door slightly ajar, then sidled over to Hannah with a tray, leering at her the whole way.

“Hey there, pretty lady. I brought you something to eat,” he said, his voice oozing sleaze.

Hannah looked him up and down, this guy was pushing fifty, old enough to be her dad.

She flashed a coy smile at him, her eyes darting to the half-open door before she lowered her gaze, playing up the helpless

act.

“But my hands are tied… I can’t eat like this. Could you untie me, please?” she asked, her voice soft and pleading.
