When the guy with buck teeth saw Hannah flash that seductive smile, his body instantly reacted, and his grin twisted into something even creepier.
He hadn’t touched a woman in years, and now that he’d finally gotten his hands on such a sweet young thing, he figured he’d better make his move while his Boss and the crew were distracted with their meal.
He swallowed, shoved the plate of food aside, and his hands started to reach out toward Hannah.
“Heh heh, little lady, let me help you out of those ropes…” he leered.
But just as he crouched down, completely off guard, Hannah seized the moment. Her eyes went cold, and she moved with lightning speed, locking his neck in a chokehold.
His eyes went wide in shock. ‘When the hell did she get out of those ropes?’ he thought.
“You…” he started to say, but Hannah’s grip tightened around his neck, her fingers digging into a few pressure points. A sharp pain shot through his neck, and suddenly, he couldn’t make a sound.
In the next instant, Hannah grabbed the piece of firewood she’d hidden behind her and slammed it hard against the back of his head, giving him a taste of his own medicine for that blow he’d given her last night.
His eyes went wide in shock, and in the next moment, his struggling hands went limp, falling to his sides as his eyes closed.
Hannah let him drop and checked his pulse. He was still alive.
She grabbed the rope and quickly bound his wrists and ankles. Then she crept over to the door, cracked it open just a sliver, and peeked outside.
They were holed up in an old house on the mountain. No one was outside, but she could hear people talking and dishes clinking from the main house next door, they were all having dinner.
Across from the woodshed, an old SUV sat under a tree. If she wanted to reach it, she’d have to walk right past the front door of the main house. No way she’d get there without someone seeing her.
She looked up at the sky. Clouds covered everything, making it impossible to tell which way was which. ‘Forget it, I’ll figure it out once I’m out of here, she thought.
She slipped out, quietly closing the woodshed door behind her. Pressing herself against the wall, she crept around to the back of the shed, then suddenly stopped dead in her tracks.
Chained to a big tree behind the shed was a massive wolfdog, gnawing on a bone. It perked up at the sound and lifted its head.
For a tense three seconds, Hannah and the wolfdog locked eyes..
Then, out of nowhere, the wolfdog suddenly exploded into a frenzy of barking.
Inside the main house, the scarred man was in the middle of his meal when he heard the commotion.
“Why’s that mutt barking so damn loud? Go check it out,” the scarred man said, not even looking up from his plate.
He’d gone out of his way to get that wolfdog after Yvette and her mom slipped away last time.
A bald man immediately put down his fork and got up to head out. Just as he reached the door, the scarred man called out again.

He wondered why the the guy with buck teeth had been gone for so long.
The bald man hurried outside. Moments later, his voice rang out: “Boss, bad news! She’s gone!”
“Shit! Go after her!” the scarred man yelled, tossing his fork aside and grabbing his weapon as he rushed out.
Winter in Southmart was nothing like Brynlock. Here, the trees never lost their leaves, no matter the season.

The mountain trails were uneven, weeds everywhere, and the trees were all over the place, growing wherever they wanted. If one tried running through here, one could get lost or trip over something in no time.
But Hannah had spent her whole childhood in the mountains, this kind of wild forest was her playground growing up.
She picked up the pace, with the wolfdog and the SUV hot on her heels.
“Stop right there, you bitch! You’d better stop, or I’ll shoot!” the scarred man yelled from the passenger seat.
He leaned out the window, rifle in hand, trying to aim at Hannah, but the rough ride kept throwing off his aim.
Hannah glanced back, the SUV and the wolfdog were almost on her. Without missing a beat, she scanned her surroundings and made a beeline for the densest part of the woods.
Suddenly, she spotted three or four fallen trees up ahead, scattered haphazardly across her path, their trunks tangled with
thick vines.
She took a steadying breath and pushed herself, sprinting full speed toward them!
With one hand braced on a fallen trunk, she vaulted over it in one swift, badass move, twisting her body midair. She slipped past the vines and weaved through the jumble of fallen trees, barely slowing down.
The SUV screeched to a stop in front of the fallen trees. The guys piled out, but before anyone could stop it, the wolfdog vaulted over the trunk, hot on Hannah’s trail.
“Boss, do we really keep chasing? That’s the way into the deep woods!” The bald man stammered, looking scared out of his
wits.
Those trees had been chopped down by him years ago, as a warning, nobody’s supposed to go past this point.
That way led straight into another deep mountain, a place so dangerous it was straight-up cursed. Wild beasts roamed everywhere, and there was some ancient mass grave from god-knows-when, so freaky, nobody from the village ever dared to go near it.
Back then, the bald man didn’t believe all that talk about curses and ghosts. He thought the villagers were just superstitious. The deep woods were empty, but packed with wild game, so he went along with his Boss for a big hunting trip.
But they didn’t catch a single animal. Instead, they barely made it out alive, and the whole nightmare was burned into his memory forever.
They’d gone in with a dozen guys, but only four crawled back out./The Boss got that scar on his face during that trip, he went totally nuts, slashing himself with his own knife. It was creepy as hell.
In the end, the four of them literally rolled and crawled their way out. After that, the bald man swore he’d never go back, and he even chopped down those trees himself to block the path.
The scarred man spat in contempt, his expression darkening. “We’re not going after her. Call the wolfdog back. You two, stay here and keep watch.”
‘She’s just a little girl, went in there with nothing, she’s a dead girl walking. Saves me the trouble of dealing with her myself,’ the scarred man thought.

Hannah kept running until she was sure no one was after her and the wolfdog had vanished. Only then did she finally stop, doubled over and panting, her throat parched and her whole body drenched in sweat.
She peeled off her jacket and slumped against a tree, struggling to catch her breath. Her legs were trembling so badly she could barely stay upright.
She hadn’t had a single bite to eat or a sip of water all day, just those little pills. With a low fever burning and after running like mad, her body was about to give out.

She glanced around and spotted a patch of black nightshade nearby, its branches heavy with clusters of small and black berries.
She’d eaten these wild berries when she was a kid. The green ones were poisonous, but once they ripened and turned black, they were less toxic, edible, but only in small amounts.
Hannah walked over, picked a few of the black berries, and ate them. They soothed her dry throat and gave her just enough to settle her empty stomach.
Next, she found a silverberry tree covered in clusters of yellow fruit. They were mouth-puckeringly sour, and Hannah hated the taste, but with nothing else to eat out here, she couldn’t afford to be picky. Grimacing, she forced herself to choke down a few.
She finished eating, but somehow, she felt even hungrier than before.
‘God, I could kill for one of Barnaby’s perfectly cooked steaks right now, crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, just the way I like it,’ Hannah thought, practically drooling.
Her stomach growled in agreement.
She looked up at the gray sky, night was closing in fast.
While she was searching for berries, she’d used the thickness of the leaves and the way the moss grew to figure out her location. She was deep in the mountains now, far from the village.
There was no way she could make it out of these mountains before dark on foot. She had to figure out how to make it through the night.
Once she got back, she was definitely going to ask Barnaby to make her another steak, just the way she liked it.
