Meanwhile, at the main house.

The scarred man jumped out of the SUV and checked his phone, still no signal. “That’s odd. There’s always reception here. Did the jammer mess up again?’ he muttered to himself.

He needed to call Gemma and the others to let them know Hannah had gotten away.

But when he looked up and saw a shadow inside the house, he was just about to shout when a booming voice thundered from behind him.

“Freeze! Hands up! You’re surrounded!”

“Who the hell are you?” the scarred man spat, whipping around, only to realize he was now hemmed in by a squad of commandos, every single one aiming their guns at him, black muzzles glinting coldly.

It was clear that if he made even the slightest move, they’d fill him full of holes.

The scarred man was used to this kind of showdown, he was a regular at the police station, and he recognized the leader as Vincent from the city bureau. But the stone-faced guy with the buzz cut next to him? That was someone new.

“Vincent, what’s with the heavy firepower today?” he said, flashing a cocky grin.

He swaggered over, fished out a pack of cigarettes, gave it a tap against his palm, and held one out to Vincent.

But Vincent didn’t hesitate. He grabbed the scarred man’s arm, threw him over his shoulder, and slammed him hard into the ground. The scarred man’s face hit the dirt right alongside his dropped cigarette, and Vincent ground his cheek into the earth for good measure.

“Where did you hide her?” Vincent snapped, his voice cutting through the air.

The scarred man groaned from the pain, but still played dumb. “Hide who? I don’t know what you’re talking about, man!”

Vincent wrenched his arm hard behind his back. “Hannah, where are you keeping her?”

The scarred man grunted from the pain, but he was tough, still mouthing off, “I swear, I have no clue what you’re talking about! You’re just roughing me up for nothing. Let me go, or I’ll report you for police brutality!”

Ethan stepped up and gave Vincent’s arm a quick tap. Vincent, thinking Ethan was worried about the threat, just waved it off. “Don’t sweat it. This guy’s a career criminal. If we don’t put some pressure on him, he’ll never talk.”

Ethan just shot him a look, saying nothing.

He jerked his thumb toward the sky, urging, “Pick up the pace. They’re almost here.”

Vincent heard it too, the distant hum of a helicopter grew louder until it hovered right above them, the downdraft making the trees sway wildly.

The scarred man couldn’t help but feel a surge of hope. ‘Is Lauren back?’ he thought.

He looked up and saw the helicopter lower a ladder, but instead of Lauren, two men climbed down.

The first one down was a guy in full camo, with a boyish face that made him look way too young for the job.

The second was dressed in a sharp black suit, his features so striking they were almost intimidating, and he radiated an oppressive, suffocating aura that made everyone around him tense up.

The scarred man swallowed hard, all his hope vanishing in an instant. Cold sweat broke out on his forehead. ‘Shit, those two are Barnaby Thole and Magnus Croft!’ he thought, panic rising in his chest.

“Mr. Thole, Mr. Croft,” Ethan and Vincent greeted them with respectful nods.

“Any luck finding her?” Barnaby glanced at Ethan, his eyes cold and sharp.

“No,” Ethan replied, shaking his head. “We searched everywhere, inside and out, but there’s no sign of Hannah. There was a guy tied up in the shed, just woke him up. He said Hannah choked him out, but he doesn’t know anything else.”

Barnaby’s brows knitted together, his icy gaze locking onto the scarred man. “Still not talking?”

“Not yet. This slippery bastard’s got a mouth like a steel trap. Give me a little more time, and I’ll make him talk,” Vincent replied.

“Magnus,” Barnaby said, shooting him a look.

Magnus got the message. He raised his hand, gestured to two commandos, then turned and headed toward the back of the house.

The two commandos immediately stepped forward, took the scarred man from Vincent, and escorted him between them, following Magnus.

The scarred man finally realized just how deep he was in. He struggled, still trying to sound tough. “Hey, what are you doing? Get your hands off me! Don’t think you can break me, I’m not scared of you bastards!”

Vincent and Ethan exchanged a look, then, a blood-curdling scream ripped through the air from behind the main house, sending birds scattering from the trees. Vincent and Ethan both felt a chill run down their spines.

The blood-curdling screams lasted a full five minutes before finally fading away.

Magnus strode out from behind the main house, casually wiping his hands with a handkerchief, wearing a look of pure distaste.

Trailing behind him, the scarred man was hauled out by the two commandos, his face empty and his eyes totally out of it. No visible injuries, but he was nothing like the loudmouth he’d been just minutes ago.

Vincent swallowed hard, still reeling from shock. ‘What the hell did Magnus do in just five minutes to shatter this guy’s nerves like that?’ he wondered, a chill running down his spine.

“Boss, he says Hannah headed deep into the mountains,” Magnus reported as he strode up to Barnaby.

Barnaby checked his watch. “Five minutes. That’s an improvement.”

Magnus said, “Still not as fast as your three-minute record.”

Back then, Barnaby had gotten a spy to spill everything in just three minutes.

Vincent could only stare, lost for words.

‘Three minutes? What kind of monster interrogation is that?’ Vincent thought, his mind spinning,

“Sweep the mountain. I want her found before dark, no excuses,” Barnaby said coldly.

“Yes, sir!” everyone echoed.

Magnus took a squad and some search dogs, heading straight into the mountains.

Barnaby stayed behind at the main house, his fists clenched so tight his knuckles turned white. ‘Hannah’s terrified of the

dark, he thought, anxiety gnawing at him. ‘I have to bring her back before sunset, no matter what!

“Barnaby, all the signal boosters are up and running,” Ronin’s voice came through the earpiece.

“Good,” Barnaby said, then turned and climbed into the helicopter.

As the helicopter headed deeper into the mountains, Barnaby fired up two laptops. One screen lit up with twelve different surveillance feeds, giving him eyes on every corner of the place.

On the other laptop, he cracked his knuckles, plugged in a USB drive, and started typing like a man possessed. Lines of code flashed across the black screen in a blur.

At the Veridia military airbase, inside the satellite monitoring office.

The computer screen tracking VER-224 suddenly flashed a critical red warning.

The night shift tech yelled, “Fuck! VER-224’s getting hacked again! Lock it down!”

“Raven’s at it again? He hit us just last night, and now he’s back for more?”

“Track his location, now!”

“Same spot as yesterday, but the technique’s different. Feels more like Shadow’s style this time.”

“Forget who it is, just shut him down! Fuck, he’s messing with the satellite’s orbit!”

“They’re definitely in on this together!”

“Like the Cynthorian say: can you stop milking the same damn sheep to death?!”

Meanwhile, deep in the mountains.

Hannah was busy picking up dry branches, getting ready to build a fire and tough it out for the night. She figured she’d make her escape from the mountains at sunrise.

Out of nowhere, the thunder of helicopters echoed overhead, more than one, and they were closing in fast. Not sure if they were friend or foe, she dove for cover in the nearest thicket. In her rush, her foot slipped and she went crashing down…
