Meanwhile, as evening fell, Barnaby used satellite surveillance to search half the mountain. Deep in the woods, he finally

found Hannah’s coat.

He got off the helicopter and sent the location to Magnus. The team quickly spread out, searching the area around where the coat had been found.

As the sky got darker, Barnaby’s expression grew more and more tense. He gripped Hannah’s coat so tightly that his knuckles turned white.

Magnus had been through more than a dozen S-class missions with Barnaby, but he’d never seen him this wound up before. He walked over, trying to reassure him.

“Barnaby, seriously, don’t stress. Hannah’s tough, she grew up in these mountains. If anyone can handle this, it’s her,” Magnus said.

“Yeah,” Barnaby grunted, then turned to his earpiece and said to Ronin, “Bring over some floodlights.”

Then he headed back into the helicopter, eyes glued to the monitors as he kept searching.

It wasn’t until nightfall that Ethan finally found some traces in a thicket about a kilometer away.

The bushes showed fresh breaks, a few strands of wool snagged on the branches, and blood smeared across the nearby leaves. When he pushed the thicket aside, he spotted a cave entrance, the grass at the mouth looked like something had slid down through it.

“Mr. Thole, Mr. Croft, over here!” Ethan called out, waving them over.

Barnaby set down his laptop and headed over with Magnus in tow.

Ethan filled them in on the details. “Judging by these signs, looks like Hannah fell down into the cave.”

No wonder we’ve been searching for so long and still couldn’t find her.

Barnaby still gripped Hannah’s coat, his perfect face giving nothing away. But the chilling aura he gave off made around him shiver.

“Clear it out,” he said, his voice emotionless as he glanced at the thicket blocking the cave entrance.

Magnus nodded and called over a few of his men. They made quick work of the thicket, clearing it out completely and exposing a cave mouth about six and a half feet wide and close to fifty feet deep.

The entrance was hidden by bushes, so unless one were looking closely from the air, it was almost impossible to spot.

They walked up to the edge of the cave and shone their flashlights down, but the beam vanished into the darkness, there was no sign of the bottom.

Their flashlights could reach up to sixteen hundred feet, and even that wasn’t enough to see the bottom, which meant it was even deeper than that.

“It’s more than sixteen hundred feet deep. Who knows what’s down there,” Ethan said.

Everyone’s expression turned grim. A girl falling from that height… chances of her making it out alive were slim.

“Mr. Thole, you should prepare yourself. From that high up, even if she survived, she’d probably be crippled…” Vincent hesitated, unable to finish.

“Shut up!” Barnaby snapped, cutting him off.

Vincent was about to offer some words of comfort, but Barnaby shut him down with a cold, sharp “Enough.”

Barnaby’s presence was suffocating, Vincent shivered, and nobody else dared to say a word.

Barnaby gripped Hannah’s coat tighter, telling himself, ‘She’s going to be okay. I know it!

‘She made it through hell eleven years ago. She’ll survive this too, Barnaby thought.

But then another worry gnawed at him, ‘It’s pitch black out there. She must be scared. I have to get to her, fast.

Seeing Barnaby’s face grow even darker, Magnus quickly jumped in. “Hey, don’t jinx it. Hannah’s smart, she’ll get through

this.”

Still, Magnus couldn’t shake the bad feeling. Dropping from over sixteen hundred feet? Even for him, surviving that would be a miracle.

But as the team leader, he had to keep everyone’s spirits up.

“I’m sorry, this is all my fault. Let me go down and check it out,” Ethan said, guilt heavy in his voice.

If only he’d managed to stop Hannah, or just moved a bit quicker, she wouldn’t have been kidnapped, wouldn’t have been forced to flee into the mountains.

The thought that his mistake might have cost such a beautiful, vibrant girl her life tore Ethan up

inside.

Barnaby shot him a look, then turned to Magnus. “Shine the floodlights down, and take two men with you. Go check it out.”

Just as he finished speaking, a chorus of wolf howls echoed from somewhere not far ahead. Mixed in with the howls were the sounds of a scuffle.

Barnaby looked past the cave, eyes fixed in the direction of the noise, something clicking in his mind.

“I’m going to check it out,” he tossed out, already moving, skirting around the cave and heading straight for the sound.

“Count me in. The rest of you, stay put,” Magnus called, sprinting after Barnaby.

Ethan and Vincent shot each other a glance, then bolted after the others, leaving the uniformed commandos staring at each other, totally baffled.

.The closer they got, the louder the fighting and wolf howls got, and the smell of blood hung heavy in the air.

Barnaby, still dressed sharp in his suit and dress shoes, was just as fast as ever, he reached the scene first, but suddenly froze, clearly seeing something that made him stop cold.

Magnus stopped short, and Ethan and Vincent couldn’t stop in time and bumped right into him,

“What’s wrong?” Vincent took a couple steps back to steady himself.

That was when they realized the fighting had stopped, all that was left were the wolves’ howls echoing through the night.

Clouds swallowed the moon, the night wind rattled the leaves, and a lone figure stood in the woods. The air reeked of blood, making the whole scene feel downright creepy.

Ethan swung his flashlight over, and there she was, head bowed, long hair wild and tangled, her arms hanging loose at her sides. Her clothes were shredded, blood everywhere.

In her left hand, she clutched a dagger, the blade flashing cold in the light, blood still dripping from the tip. All around her

feet, a dozen wolves lay sprawled out, barely alive.

Ethan, Magnus, and Vincent were left speechless, utterly stunned by the scene before them.

‘What kind of monster-level strength is this? She actually took down a whole pack of wolves?’ Ethan thought, his mind reeling.

Everyone knew wolves were famous for their teamwork, yet she single-handedly wiped out the entire pack?

And these were wild wolves, not some trained animals, her combat prowess was absolutely terrifying.

Even Magnus had to admit, he wasn’t sure he’d survive if he were surrounded by a pack of wolves.

Magnus thought, “Tristan was right, better not mess with Hannah.

Vincent thought, ‘Is it too late to take back what I said earlier?’

Ethan swallowed hard, not sure who needed help more, Hannah or the wolves at her feet.

Barnaby stood at the front, eyes narrowed as he took in Hannah’s blood-soaked, lethal vibe. His brow furrowed hard.

He was still too late. Hannah’s fear of the dark had pushed her over the edge, she’d snapped, lost to her fear and rage. Even with the flashlight shining right on her, she didn’t react at all.

“Ms. Carter, are you alright?” Vincent asked, worry in his voice as he started forward, only for Ethan to grab his arm and hold him back.

Suddenly, Hannah jerked her head up. Her icy face was streaked with blood, her eyes wild and bloodshot, and a twisted, almost manic smile curled on her lips. The sight was downright chilling.

Only then did Vincent realize just how unnerving she was acting, and he couldn’t help but shiver.

Suddenly, the dagger in Hannah’s grip twitched, and she launched herself at Barnaby, wild-eyed and completely out of control.

Barnaby reacted in a flash, grabbing her wrist before she could strike. But Hannah was ready, she let the dagger drop, snatched it with her other hand, and went straight for his throat.

Barnaby caught her other hand just in time, pinning both her wrists. Hannah didn’t miss a beat, she kicked out viciously, forcing Barnaby to release her. The two of them tore through the woods, trading blows in a blur of speed and fury.

. Barnaby’s arm was slashed open by the dagger. Unlike last time, Hannah was stronger, fiercer, and completely unreachable,

no matter what he did, she wouldn’t snap out of it. She was like a woman possessed.
