After leaving the classroom, Hannah didn’t go straight to Owen. Instead, she headed out of the school gates, hopped into a rideshare, and made her way to Starlake General Hospital.

She stopped by a fruit stand near the hospital entrance to pick up a fruit basket, then headed straight to the fifth floor of the inpatient wing and walked into the last room at the end of the hallway.

The room was empty, with no guards in sight. Only Ethan, dressed in a hospital gown, was lying on the bed.

“Hannah, what are you doing here?” Ethan sat up in surprise as soon as he saw her.

Just came to see how you’re holding up. Is your wound any better?” Hannah locked the door and set the fruit basket on the table.

Ethan lifted his shirt, showing the bandage wrapped around his side. “It’s nothing, just a minor cut. Any progress on the

case?”

Hannah pulled up a chair and sat down, her voice steady. “There’s a mole among us.”

“Is it really him?” Ethan’s fists tightened.

Hannah shook her head. “Can’t say for sure.”

Turned out, Ethan wasn’t nearly as badly hurt as Vincent had made it out to be over the phone with Hannah.

Ever since someone beat them to the stuff in the grove, Hannah had started suspecting there was a mole, but she had no idea who it could be.

Later, at Ascent Ventures, Barnaby got word that Gemma was bribing the media. Right around that time, Ethan got a minor injury on a mission.

So they came up with a plan. Ethan would play up his injury, saying it was so bad he couldn’t handle the case anymore, hand it off to someone else, and even leak Lauren’s location.

Sure enough, the new guy on the case nabbed Lauren in no time and shut the case down before anyone could blink.

The speed of it all just made Hannah even more certain, besides Victor Davis, who’d already been taken down, there was someone else in the police station on Gemma’s payroll, or maybe it was the mole.

Could be the same person, or maybe there were more than one.

As soon as word about Lauren got out, Gemma’s prepped news stories flooded the media and she went all out. But she never saw it coming, Lauren bit back, and Gemma landed herself right back behind bars.

From the moment Gemma was arrested and interrogated, to her attempt to bite her tongue, to being rushed to the hospital, and finally getting sniped right at the police station entrance, all of that happened in under half a day.

Someone must have tipped off the sniper about what was going on inside, or there was no way they could have taken Gemma out so precisely.

No one saw Gemma trying to bite her tongue coming.

She probably knew it wasn’t a quick way to die anyway. The cops would rush her to the hospital before she bled out, and then she could either make a break for it or sneak off to see Jasper.

But whatever she was really thinking, she never got the chance to say it. All it did was make Hannah even more certain there was a mole in the police station, not just in Brynlock, but in Southmart too.

And when Ethan said “him,” he was talking about Vincent.

Even though Hannah said she wasn’t sure, Ethan knew deep down. He’d only ever shown Vincent the screenshot of the email from Yvette that Hannah had sent him. But then the evidence vanished, and Hannah got kidnapped. Vincent was definitely up to something.

Just thinking about his best friend betraying him like that made Ethan’s blood boil.

“After you got hurt, he only called me once, just to say you were in trouble and that Lauren’s case was closed. He hasn’t done anything else.” Hannah said.

Ethan kept his head down, hiding his face, but his tightly clenched fists said it all, he was fighting hard to keep his anger in check.

Hannah pulled a small ornate box from her bag and handed it over. “I made these myself, they’ll help you bounce back faster. Take care of yourself first. When it comes to tracking down the mole, you’re the pro, not me.”

Gemma’s death made Hannah realize just how reckless she’d been.

She thought that if she moved fast and hit hard, she could catch the real killer behind her adoptive mom’s death. But she completely underestimated how cunning the mastermind really was.

She needed to learn patience. If she made a show of hunting for the mole now, it would only alert the mastermind lurking in the shadows.

If Gemma could be silenced so openly, there’s nothing this mastermind wouldn’t dare to do.

“Got it,” Ethan replied.

He knew exactly what Hannah was getting at. First, they’d hunt down the mole, then use that lead to uncover the mastermind pulling the strings. After that, they’d flush out every last traitor in the police station and restore integrity to the force.

Hannah didn’t stick around for long. After reminding Ethan to take his medicine, she headed out, but before leaving, she gave him a final reminder in a low voice, “Don’t let Barnaby know I was here.”

Technically, she should’ve been sitting in an exam back at school right now.

As Hannah stepped out of the hospital room and was about to enter the elevator, someone called out to her.

“Ms. Scott? Is that really you? Oh, thank goodness! I’ve been hoping to run into you. Mr. Whitmore has been trying to get in touch with you for ages.”

Hannah turned around and recognized the person, it was Dr. Lee, Aurelia’s attending physician.

Dr. Lee was practically buzzing with excitement. He’d witnessed Hannah’s Thirteen Phantasmagoria Needles technique before, and even Mr. Whitmore couldn’t stop singing her praises.

But when they tried to pull up the security footage to study it, the cameras suddenly malfunctioned and all the recordings

were gone.

Ever since then, Mr. Whitmore had been obsessed with finding Flannah.

“What’s up?” Hannah asked.

“Mr. Whitmore has been trying to reach you for ages. Would you mind meeting him? He’s in his office right now, and the Nameless Healer happens to be here today too. How about meeting them both?

“Could you wait here for a moment? I’ll go get him right now,” Dr. Lee said, clearly excited but trying to keep it professional.

even bother with the elevator, he spun around and dashed for the stairs, hurrying off to fetch Mr.

At Mr. Whitmore’s office.

Daisy had finally figured out how things worked around here. To keep her cover, she’d come by to clear up Mr. Whitmore’s questions about the Thirteen Phantasmagoria Needles he’d asked earlier.

They were in the middle of an animated discussion when Dr. Lee rushed in, practically out of breath. “Mr. Whitmore, Ms. Scott is here! The one who performed the Thirteen Phantasmagoria Needles!”

He didn’t actually know Hannah’s real name, but since she was Aurelia’s granddaughter, he instinctively called her Ms. Scott.

Mr. Whitmore was about to call him out for barging in, but the second he heard “Ms. Scott,” he sprang to his feet. “Where is she? Let’s go, take me to her!”

“Sorry, Ms. Reese, I’ll be right back,” Mr. Whitmore said to Daisy, then rushed out with Dr. Lee.

Daisy was left alone in the office.

She’d come all this way just to answer Mr. Whitmore’s questions about the Thirteen Phantasmagoria Needles, and now she was getting totally sidelined.

‘Seriously? Is this Ms. Scott they keep hyping up really even more legendary than the Nameless Healer?’ Daisy grumbled to herself, feeling a little miffed.

She got up and followed after them.

She was curious to see for herself who this Ms. Scott was, the one everyone claimed could pull off the Thirteen Phantasmagoria Needles like it was child’s play.

But when the three of them reached the fifth floor by the elevators, Hannah was already gone.

“Where is she?” Mr. Whitmore asked, looking around.

“She was just here a moment ago!” Dr. Lee said, afraid they wouldn’t buy it. “Let me get the security footage, Ms. Scott was definitely here.”

“No need, she probably had something urgent and left,” Mr. Whitmore replied with a hint of disappointment. “Checking the cameras won’t bring her back. I’m sure I’ll meet her eventually.”
