Over on snack street, Hannah had no clue that the small fib she told Barnaby nearly changed Owen’s whole world.
She and Zoe had just left the milkshake shop and were headed over to a BBQ joint when Hannah slipped out to use the restroom. Suddenly, there was a commotion at the street corner.
“Who’s old lady is that? She just collapsed.”
“Is this one of those fake accidents? I saw on the news that some seniors hang around schools just to scam students, easy money.”
“Unless your family’s loaded, I’d think twice before helping.”
“Rich kids steer clear. If you’re broke, just mind your own business.”
A bunch of students crowded around an old lady with white hair, pointing their phones at her and recording everything.
The old lady was dressed in tattered clothes, looking every bit like a beggar. One student tried to help her up, but a guy nearby pulled them back.
“Move aside!” A cold voice came from the back of the crowd.
Everyone turned to see Hannah standing at the edge, her face cool and distant.
“Hey, Hannah, these old ladies are just here to scam people. Don’t get tricked, if you help her, she’ll blame you for everything,” a guy who recognized her warned.
Hannah ignored him and walked over to the old woman. The sight of her white hair made Hannah think of her grandma in the countryside, and her instincts kicked in, she had to check on her.
“Hannah…” the guy tried again.
“Shut up. If you’re not helping, quit running your mouth!” Hannah shot back.
The guy started to protest, but Hannah gave him a frosty look that shut him up instantly.
“Ma’am, can you move your leg at all?” Hannah crouched down, supporting the old lady’s arm as she helped her sit up. Then, her slender fingers pressed a few acupressure points on the woman’s knee.
“Oh dear… that hurts…” the old lady groaned, her voice full of discomfort.
“Ma’am! Ma’am! Who are you, and what did you do to our Ma’am?”
At that moment, a middle-aged woman in her fifties, flanked by two bodyguards, shoved her way through the crowd and pointed at Hannah, shouting furiously.
The onlookers all sucked in a sharp breath.
‘Knew it, the crowd thought. “This old lady’s totally running a scam. The second someone helps, her crew jumps out, puts on a show, and demands money!
The crowd stared at Hannah with a mix of pity and schadenfreude, like they were watching a drama unfold. The guy who’d warned her earlier couldn’t help but gloat, whispering to the others, “See? I told her not to get involved. Now she’s in
trouble.”
But in the very next moment, everyone watching was totally stunned.

While the middle-aged woman was still shouting and telling her bodyguards to grab Hannah, Hannah didn’t even blink. She just kept cool and started feeling the old lady’s pulse, acting like nothing could shake her.
The two bodyguards, looking like they were about to jump Hannah, were just about to make a move when, out of nowhere, a burly guy in black sweats and a mask darted out of the crowd and stepped right in front of them.
He moved with lightning speed, taking down both bodyguards in just a few swift moves.
Then, before anyone could even blink, he slipped back into the crowd, so fast it almost felt unreal. But the two bodyguards. groaning on the ground were all the proof anyone needed.
The crowd erupted in applause.
Hannah looked toward where the man in black had vanished. She didn’t know him, but his build seemed oddly familiar, like she’d seen him before, though she just couldn’t place him.
Plus, the way he moved didn’t feel like some random guy stepping in to play hero. It was more like he’d been secretly watching over her the whole time, ready to jump in if anything happened.
Suddenly, Barnaby popped into her mind.
Ever since she got kidnapped, Barnaby had either been glued to her side or had Ronin tailing her.
“You! You!” The woman in her fifties was furious, pulling out her phone to call for help, but the old lady stopped her.
“Don’t get
worked up, Flora. This young lady isn’t here to cause trouble. I fell on my own, and she helped me up. My leg’s already feeling much better,” the old lady reassured her.
The old lady wasn’t groaning anymore. After Hannah pressed a few acupressure points, the pain in her leg had eased lot. With Hannah’s support, she was able to stand.

Flora rushed over to steady the old lady. Once she saw the old lady was really okay, she quickly turned to Hannah and apologized, “Sorry for jumping to conclusions. And thank you for helping our Ma’am.”
Then Flora finally noticed the shabby clothes the old lady was wearing. “Ma’am, why are you dressed like this? If the folks at home find out you snuck out again, they’re gonna flip.”
The old lady just waved her off, beaming as she took Hannah’s hand.
“Thank you for saving me, sweetheart. You’re Hannah, right? I honestly don’t know how to repay you. The Croft family’s got two pretty decent boys, how about you pick one? Let him devote himself to you as thanks,” she teased with a mischievous grin.
‘Did I just get offered a boyfriend for saving someone?’Hannah thought to herself.
Everyone was floored. ‘The Croft family?’
‘Wait, is this really that Croft family?’
‘No way, is she actually Pamela Croft?’
“Grandma, why are you here?” Owen called out, his voice full of surprise.
Owen, just returning, spotted Hannah in the crowd from afar. As he got closer, he was shocked to see his grandma there too.
The crowd was stunned.
Most people didn’t know Pamela, but everyone recognized Owen, the academic star.

‘So she really is Pamela Croft!’ The crowd was in total disbelief.
‘So this wasn’t a scam at all? It was just some rich folks pretending to be poor to see who’d actually step up?’ Everyone was left speechless.
The crowd bolted like scared rabbits, terrified the Croft family might remember their faces.
Pamela didn’t bat an eye. As soon as Owen showed up, she dragged him over to Hannah and said, “This is my grandson. You two already know each other, right? Take a look, see if he’s your type.”
‘What the heck is going on? Did I just get put on the spot?’ Owen thought to himself.
‘Is this for real? Did I just get set up for a blind date?’ Hannah thought to herself.
‘Seriously, it’s the 21st century already! Why did so many people still insist on offering themselves in marriage at the drop of a hat?!’ Hannah thought, totally baffled.
But she never expected to run into Pamela here of all places.
She hadn’t seen Pamela the last time she visited the Croft family, and she’d been meaning to check in with Wolfram about Pamela’s condition soon. But now, seeing Pamela in person, Hannah realized Daisy’s skills weren’t all that impressive after
all.
Judging by Pamela’s pulse, her rheumatoid arthritis hadn’t improved at all. Daisy had been giving her hormone meds, which might’ve masked the pain for a while, but it was actually setting her up for some serious long-term problems.
“No need to go that far. I’m not interested in your grandson. If you really want to thank me, cash is always welcome,” Hannah joked, keeping a straight face.
“So it’s all about the money, huh?” Pamela looked genuinely let down.
Last night, Pamela’s daughter-in-law came back from the Scott family’s annual party and told her all about Hannah, the Scott family heiress.
She said Hannah was not only pretty, but also smart and had a great personality. Most importantly, Owen seemed to really like her, and her daughter-in-law wanted to know what Pamela thought about it.
Pamela had always hoped to see a great-grandchild before she left this world, but her eldest grandson was always away in the military, spending all his time with Barnaby.
Pamela was starting to wonder if he even liked women at all, since he never showed any interest in girls.
So when she heard her younger grandson was finally showing some initiative, she couldn’t help but get curious about this Hannah her daughter-in-law mentioned.
As luck would have it, she found out Hannah was on this street today, so she decided to sneak over and check her out herself.
