The Real Heiress Is Coming Back (Hannah Carter) novel Chapter 174

Chapter 174

Chapter 174

Hannah just stared at him, lost for words.

“Is it really a side effect?” Barnaby pressed.

Hannah kept silent, her expression unreadable.

‘Seriously, it’s not! Can you just drop it already?’ she thought.

Barnaby kept teasing, “Wanna see for yourself?”

He started to loosen his bathrobe, acting like he was about to strip.

“I’m supposed to be treating your head!” Hannah snatched up a pillow and hurled it at him.

Barnaby caught the pillow, chuckled under his breath, and finally quit messing with her. He tossed the pillow back onto the bed and headed into the bathroom for a shower.

Once he was undressed, Barnaby glanced at his reflection in the mirror and noticed his chest scar had faded a lot.

He leaned in for a closer look, and sure enough, the once-fierce scar was much lighter. Even the old scar on his waist and the new one on his thigh had faded, with the fresh mark on his thigh now especially faint.

He turned around, and just as he expected, the fierce scars on his back had faded too.

Barnaby’s eyes flickered, something inside him shifted, and before he knew it, a smile crept onto his face.

He quickly finished his shower and came out to find Hannah already dressed, lounging on the couch in the living room, scrolling through her phone as she waited for him.

Barnaby came out in fresh clothes and teased, “Are you sure you didn’t mess with me while I was out? My scars are way lighter now.”

Hannah didn’t even glance up from her phone. “They looked gross, so I just slapped some medicine on them. There’s still some powder left, use it every night for 21 days.”

“No one else cares. Only you get to see them,” Barnaby said.

Hannah clicked her tongue. “Doesn’t it get depressing seeing them every day?”

‘Bet every time you see them, you remember how it happened,’ she thought.

‘Wiping away the scars is like erasing the bad memories,’ she mused.

“Some scars are meant to be remembered for a lifetime,” Barnaby said.

As he spoke, his gaze went cold, and it felt like the whole room got colder.

Hannah looked up at him, and just for a moment, she felt like she was seeing the real Barnaby,

Cold, calculating, and always holding a grudge.

“But if you don’t like them, I can get rid of all of them,” Barnaby said, a roguish grin tugging at his lips.

The cold vibe disappeared instantly, like that side of him had only been Hannah’s imagination.

Hannah didn’t know what to say.

Chapter 171

She still hadn’t seen his true colors.

“Let’s go eat. I’m starving.” Hannah said, putting her phone away and heading for the door.

As they headed out, Barnaby noticed a silver laptop on the couch, Hannah had just been blocking it from view.

He was pretty sure she hadn’t brought a laptop along when they got here.

They made their way down to a private room on the second floor. The chefs had already packed up for the night, but the manager still called them back just for the two of them. That was what one called VIP treatment.

Once they’d ordered, Hannah and Barnaby sat across from each other at the long table, both glued to their phones, not saying a single word. The silence was almost comical.

Barnaby had been out cold for a solid forty-eight hours, and when he finally powered up his phone, it was blowing up with notifications.

He scrolled through and spotted Axel’s report: Raven had hacked through the Scepter House’s firewall system. Barnaby’s signature eyes narrowed with interest.

‘Raven actually managed to break into the firewall I designed, and he pulled it off while the whole world’s after him. Now that’s someone worth keeping an eye on,’ Barnaby thought.

Barnaby tapped out a message to Axel: [Leave the breach open.]

Axel: [Why? If we don’t fix it, Raven will just waltz right in next time, it’ll be a walk in the park for him.]

Barnaby: [That’s the point. Let’s set a trap and wait for him.]

Axel: [Respect.]

Barnaby switched over to his other WhatsApp account, the one he used as the Scepter House’s Master. Right at the top was a message from the Nameless Healer.

[I’ve got a batch of special meds made from leftover Obsidian Pearl material. Limited stock. Want to auction them off at the Scepter House?]

Barnaby shot a look at Hannah across the table, smirked, and fired back a one-word reply.

[Yes.]

Hannah was scrolling through the Heaven Medical Network. Ever since she published her paper on pharmaceuticals, she’d been flooded with messages from media outlets and drug companies, all wanting to team up and mass-produce her specialty meds.

Just then, a WhatsApp notification popped up.

The Scepter House’s Master: [Yes.]

Hannah’s eyes flickered, and another message came through.

The Scepter House’s Master: [I’m free now. Want to meet up and talk?]

Hannah suddenly sensed someone watching her. She glanced up and locked eyes with Barnaby.

“Babe, who’s got you so hooked on your phone?” Barnaby asked, grinning.

Chapter 174

Hannah slid her phone away. “Just a patient.”

Barnaby didn’t know what to say.

Just then, the waiter came in with their food.

They ate in silence, but Hannah’s mind kept spinning on how to reach out to the Scepter House’s Master again.

She couldn’t take on any more jobs as Raven, so she had to find another hustle. A little extra cash would make things way smoother once she hit Kinswood.

She still had some of those specialty meds left from last time, and auctioning them off at the Scepter House was hands- down the fastest way to rake in some money.

Plus, it was the perfect chance to dig up some dirt on the Scepter House’s Master, like whether he was mixed up with the Thole family, or if he had anything to do with Gemma’s death.

Just as the last dish was served, Barnaby’s phone buzzed on the table.

He glanced at the screen, it was Edmund calling. He didn’t even blink, just silenced the call and kept eating.

Once they were done, Barnaby finally picked up his phone. There were two missed calls from Edmund and one message.

He opened the message, and his expression darkened.

“We’re heading back to Skycrest House later,” Hannah said.

“I’ll drop you off at the Scott Villa,” Barnaby said.

They both spoke at the same time.

Hannah blinked, a little surprised, then asked, “Where are you going?”

‘He’s not going back to Skycrest, and he’s dropping me off at the Scott Villa? Does that mean he won’t be staying at Skycrest anytime soon?’ she wondered.

“I have to go back to the Thole family. I probably won’t be back until after the holidays,” Barnaby said.

‘Guess that means we won’t be spending the holidays together, Hannah thought, feeling a pang of disappointment.

“Alright, let’s head out. We’ll stop by Skycrest first so I can grab Hedy and take her back to the Scott Villa,” Hannah said.

Hannah’s thick, long lashes lowered as she felt a wave of unhappiness, she really wasn’t in the mood.

Barnaby watched every little shift in her expression, then reached out and ruffled her hair. “Be good.”

They went back up to the presidential suite to pack. Hannah gave Barnaby the rest of his medicine and reminded him how

to use it.

When they stepped out of the hotel, Ronin was already waiting by the car, with Hedy’s pet carrier sitting in the passenger

seat.

Hannah felt her mood take another nosedive when she saw it.

‘Are they really about to drive all the way back to Kinswood overnight?’ she thought, even more annoyed.

The car ride was dead silent until they finally pulled up outside the gates of the Scott Villa.

“Barnaby, Ms. Carter, we’re here,” Ronin said.

Barnaby and Hannah got out of the car and stood there at the gate, looking at each other as snowflakes drifted down from the night sky, falling softly on their heads under the streetlights.

“I’ll miss you,” Barnaby said, kissing her forehead.

“Mm.” Hannah replied softly.

“Is there really nothing you want to say to me?” Barnaby asked.

“Don’t forget to take your medicine on time,” Hannah said.

Barnaby arched a brow. “That’s all you have to say?”

Hannah just looked at him, silent.

Seeing she wasn’t going to say anything, Barnaby said, “Alright, I’m leaving then.”

He turned to go, but felt a sudden tug at his shirt.

He stopped, turned around, and suddenly Hannah threw herself at him, hugging his neck tight.
