Chapter 178

“Will you just pop up out of nowhere if I say that again?” Hannah asked.

Just like that time you suddenly appeared at the snack street, she thought to herself.

Hearing her, Barnaby wished he could just drop everything and rush to Scott Villa right now. Before he could even get the word “yes” out, Axel knocked on the door and came in.

“Barnaby, Ronin just sent word. The driver your brother sent is almost at Ascent Ventures. Axel said in a low voice.

Barnaby frowned slightly and nodded, letting Axel know he understood.

Edmund had told him to come back, but he hadn’t. So now, Edmund was sending someone to bring him back in person.

“I wish I could, but I can’t leave right now,” he said into the phone.

“Oh…” Hannah replied.

“Gotta go, something came up,” Barnaby added.

“Okay,” Hannah said softly.

Hannah hung up, flopped onto her bed, and stared at the ceiling. feeling that familiar emptiness settle in her chest.

Hedy picked up on her mood, shuffled over, and poked her cheek with its snout.

Hannah couldn’t help but smile at the ticklish sensation. She grabbed its tiny head and started petting it, somehow, that made her feel a little better.

Just then, her phone buzzed with a new message.

Hannah opened it, it was a selfie from Barnaby

His chiseled, flawless face filled the screen. lips curled in a faint smirk, a cold, dangerous, yet wickedly attractive vibe about him. The background was the back seat of a car, looked like he’d just taken it.

Barnaby also wrote: [If you miss me, just take a few more looks.]

Hannah’s lips curled into a small smile as she long-pressed the photo and saved it to her phone.

Then she opened her camera, snapped a pic of Hedy, and sent it to Barnaby.

Meanwhile, in the back seat of a Rolls-Royce.

Barnaby noticed the WhatsApp icon for Hannah, which he’d pinned to his home screen, had a red 2 next to it. He tapped it

open.

Hannah: [Your son misses you too.]

Below the message was a photo, no need to open it, the screen was already filled with a close-up of a pig’s snout.

It was obvious she’d just shoved the camera right up to the pig’s nose, no composition or artistry at all.

Barnaby couldn’t help but laugh.

Life really did balance things out. She had a flawless face and brilliant medical skills, but when it came to taking photos, she was all thumbs.

No matter how hard he tried to teach her, if she didn’t practice for a while, she would instantly forget everything and go right back to square one.

At the Croft family residence.

On the third day after Pamela stopped taking her meds, her knees started hurting so badly she couldn’t even get out of bed.

Now she was stuck in a wheelchair, and her maid, Flora, was heartbroken watching her suffer. Flora called the family doctor to come check on her, but Pamela just refused.

By the sixth day, Pamela’s knees were swollen up like balloons, she couldn’t move at all, and she was running a fever.

The family doctor was waiting outside her room, but Pamela still wouldn’t let him in to check on her.

She was determined to hold out until the seventh day, when she could finally take the medicine Hannah had given her.

When Pamela’s eldest son, Benedict Croft, got word that his mother’s condition had taken a turn for the worse, and she still refused to see a doctor, he dropped everything in Kinswood and rushed back to Brynlock.

“What’s going on here?” Benedict demanded as he reached Pamela’s bedroom door.

Wolfram, his wife and son, along with Dr. June and Teresa, were all left waiting in the hallway, while Flora was the only one allowed inside to look after Pamela.

“Mrs. Pamela Croft stopped taking her meds on her own for six days. Her legs are getting worse, but she refuses to let anyone treat her or take any medication,” Dr. June explained.

He was the Croft family’s personal doctor, having worked for them for over a decade, so he knew all about Pamela’s rheumatoid arthritis.

Pamela couldn’t afford to skip her meds, if she did, her leg problems would only get worse.

For a while, Pamela’s legs had been getting a lot better thanks to Daisy’s treatment. But six days ago, she was talked into it by someone else, suddenly refused Daisy’s help, and quit her meds without telling anyone.

As soon as she stopped taking her meds, her illness rebounded hard. If this kept up, she might lose her legs for good, amputation could be the only option.

“Who told Mom to stop taking her meds?” Benedict asked, his expression grim.

He was a few years older than Wolfram, and as the current head of the Croft family, his presence was even more commanding and severe. When he frowned, the whole hallway seemed to grow colder.

Owen kept his mouth shut, worried that if he said anything, Hannah might get dragged into this mess.

But just because he stayed quiet didn’t mean the others would.

“It was that girl from the Scott family, the one they brought back from the mountains,” Teresa said.

“Last time, Wolfram even brought her home, hoping she could treat Mom. I stopped him, but she just wouldn’t give up. Now she’s treating Mom behind our backs and even convinced her to stop taking her meds,” Teresa continued.

“Mom’s being so foolish. Not only did she listen to that girl, she even wants to bring her into our family. It’s like someone put a spell on her,” Teresa added.

“Teresa, what are you getting at?” Wolfram’s wife Mavis Croft snapped, clearly annoyed.

Mavis had always liked Hannah, and she and Wolfram both wanted her as their future daughter-in-law.

She was the one who first brought up the marriage idea to Pamela, which led Pamela to reach out to Hannah and get involved with her.

I never thought things would end up like this, Mavis thought, feeling a bit helpless.

But from the way Teresa was talking, it was obvious she was trying to dump all the blame on them, and Mavis wasn’t having

“That’s exactly what I mean,” Teresa shot back, her tone icy.

“Teresa, don’t make Hannah out to be some kind of villain. She’s actually good at what she does, she’s a real doctor,” Wolfram said, his face set in a grim line.

“Does she even have a medical license? If she’s such a hotshot, then why are Mom’s legs like this?” Teresa snapped. “And don’t forget, last time you brought her over, she looked so flustered when she heard about the Nameless Healer.”

Wolfram just fell silent.

He honestly didn’t know if Hannah had any kind of license, but he’d seen her work her needles with his own eyes. Plus, her grandma was a big deal doctor back in the mountains. Still, he couldn’t exactly bring that up right now.

“She doesn’t even know what she’s doing, and yet she talked Mom into quitting her meds and even made the Nameless Healer leave in frustration. Seriously, what were you thinking, bringing a girl like that into this house?

“If something happens to Mom, can you even live with yourselves? Can you take responsibility for that?” Teresa was relentless, throwing out accusations like she was the only one who cared.

“Grandma knows exactly what she’s doing. She stopped her meds because she trusts Hannah, and Hannah gave her a new treatment. Tomorrow’s the day she can finally take it, if it works, we’ll all see for ourselves,” Owen couldn’t help but step forward and say.

There was no way he was going to let anyone talk trash about his goddess.

Just as Owen finished, the door flew open and Flora burst out, looking really worried. “Oh no! Mrs. Pamela Croft just fainted from the pain!”

Everyone instantly froze, their hearts leaping into their throats.

Teresa seized the moment, her voice sharp. “After all this, you still want your grandma to wait until tomorrow?”

Owen was caught off guard, his stomach dropping. He wanted to trust Hannah, but with his grandma’s life hanging in the balance, doubt started to creep in.

“Enough!” Benedict snapped, his voice sharp and commanding. “Dr. June, go check on my Mom. Now!”

“Yes, sir,” Dr. June said, but just as he was about to go in, Owen stepped in front of him, blocking the way.

“Just hold on a little longer. Tomorrow’s the seventh day, Grandma can finally take Hannah’s medicine,” Owen insisted, refusing to budge from the doorway.

‘I know Hannah can heal Grandma. She won’t let us down,’ Owen thought, his eyes full of determination.

“Owen, we can’t wait any longer, Mrs. Pamela Croft’s legs are in real danger. If we don’t treat her now, she could lose them, and it might even put her life on the line,” Dr. June urged, his voice tense.
