Jackson froze as he took the papers.
Both the Math and Thalvarin exams were already finished, and Hannah was working on another test, already a quarter of the way through it.
‘She really solved more than two full exams in the time for one? And in different subjects? Is she actually that good? She must’ve scribbled nonsense, Jackson thought.
He had seen plenty of students who got in through connections. Most would pretend to write something, then stroll straight into Class 11.
Thinking that, he glanced disdainfully at the first multiple-choice question on the Math test.
He only taught P.E., but he still remembered a good amount of high-school Math.
‘Choose C. Correct. Lucky, I guess. Second question, A. Also right? Is she this lucky? Third question, also correct?’ Jackson thought, stunned.
The further he read, the more unsettled he became. The first third of the multiple-choice section was entirely
correct.
As for the long-answer questions, he couldn’t be sure.
“Wait here a moment,” he said, then carried the papers off to find the subject teachers to grade them.
By then, the morning session had ended, and both students and teachers were heading out for lunch.
When Jackson reached the Sophomore office, the Math teacher for the Sophomore Class 1 was locking her door.
“Ms. Flint, perfect timing. Could you spare a moment to look over this entrance exam?” Jackson said, handing her the test.
The Math teacher, Yvonne Flint, a graduate of Holroad University, had been teaching at Cavalor for a decade and was known as a relentless workhorse.
The moment she heard the word grading, her eyes lit up. She pushed the office door back open. “Absolutely.
“I heard this semester’s entrance exam was tougher than ever. Mr. Croft designed it that way to raise the admission bar for Cavalor School.”
Yvonne sat down at her desk, adjusted her heavy glasses, and began marking.
As the number of checkmarks under her pen grew, Jackson felt his face getting hotter and hotter.
It felt like someone had slapped him, hard.
“The solution to this last problem is really clever. It’s similar to Owen’s approach, oddly enough. Impressive,”
Yvonne said, her eyes gleaming, full of praise.
“What school did Hannah come from? Is she still on campus? I’d like to meet her,” she added.
Yvonne glanced at the name on the paper, then looked at Jackson, only to notice how strange his expression had become. “Jackson? Are you okay? You don’t look well.”
“N-nothing. So, what’s her score?” Jackson swallowed hard, almost unable to believe it.
‘She finished the exam in half the allotted time, and it’s a perfect score. She’s really this good?’ he thought. ‘Even Owen can’t do that. She breezed through it.
‘And I treated her so terribly earlier.’
“Full marks,” Yvonne said cheerfully as she wrote the score.
Jackson’s knees went weak. “Okay. Hannah is still taking the rest of her exams. I’d better get back.”
Yvonne’s eyes sparkled. “She’s still here? Come on. Let’s go together. I want to meet her, too.”
When they hurried back to the classroom, Hannah was already gone. Two completed test papers sat neatly beneath her fountain pen.
Yvonne lifted one carefully. The page was tidy, the handwriting delicate, and the logic fresh and precise. “Take these to the subject teachers right away.
“I have a feeling this student will become Cavalor School’s next genius.”
In her opinion, Hannah was even more formidable than the top students.
When Hannah returned to the Scott residence, she found Dorian sitting in the living room with a thunderous expression.
Felicity was standing on the carpet, looking like a servant who’d just been scolded.
Susie lingered at the side, looking sorrowful on the surface but secretly savoring the drama.
Shattered pieces of a glass cup lay scattered across the carpet, and the mood in the room was stifling.
“You still dared come back? Who gave you the nerve to skip an exam? Stand right there,” he snapped.
The moment Dorian saw Hannah, his anger flared again. He grabbed the ashtray from the coffee table and hurled it at her.
