Chapter 185

1 BE VOUCH

Wait, Hannah and Mr. Thole are actually

ing?’ Owen’s mind went completely blank.

To hide his panic, he instinctively knelt down to pick up the pieces of the vase.

“Oh, Owen, don’t touch that! You might cut yourself. I’ll get someone to clean it up,” Flora said quickly, stopping him.

Arthur shot a surprised look at the flustered Owen, thinking, “There really are a lot of guys eyeing Hannah!’

Pamela was a bit surprised when she heard Barnaby’s name, but she quickly broke into a cheerful smile.

“Looks like Barnaby’s the lucky one here. Good for him! He’s a decent guy, too. But if he ever gives you a hard time, just dump him. The Croft family will always welcome you back,” she said.

Hannah was at a loss for words.

Just then, Owen and Arthur walked in.

“Mrs. Croft, I’m here to pick up my sister,” Arthur said.

Hannah glanced back at Arthur, surprised.

“Leaving already? Can’t you stay a few more days?” Pamela held onto Hannah’s hand, not wanting to let her leave.

“Mrs. Croft, Ms. Carter needs to be with her family,” Flora reminded her.

Pamela finally reluctantly let go of Hannah’s hand. “You have to come visit later. I’ll make sure to give you a big gift.”

“Okay,” Hannah said, standing up. She glanced at Owen, then turned back to Pamela.

“Oh, and Mrs. Croft, it’s perfectly normal for men to like men. Don’t stress about it. I have a guy friend who’s into guys, too. It’s just who he is, it’s not a disease or anything. Just let it happen naturally,” she said.

As she spoke, she noticed her phone was charged. She pulled up a photo from Van’s feed, one of him and his boyfriend looking all lovey-dovey, and showed it to Pamela.

“This is my friend and his boyfriend,” she said.

Pamela put on her reading glasses, glanced at the photo, then snatched the phone, her face lighting up with surprise.

“Wait, isn’t this that mixed-race superstar? Word is, he got into showbiz just for his boyfriend. Oh wow, so that’s his boyfriend? He’s really good-looking!” she exclaimed.

Owen was stunned.

He suddenly remembered Barnaby telling him that Hannah was obsessed with BL stuff. Seeing this scene, it finally hit him, Barnaby had totally played him for a fool!

‘Is it too late to clear things up now?’ Owen thought, freaking out/inside.

“So men can really have this kind of love, too!” Pamela said, looking genuinely touched by Hannah’s words.

Owen was speechless.

‘No, Grandma, that’s not the kind of romance I’m after!’ Owen screamed internally, his cheeks burning.

“Did you hear? Daisy walked out of Barnaby’s room this morning, looking totally fine,” one of the maids whispered.

“Yeah, I heard that too. She didn’t look too happy, though. And when the maid went in to clean, the sheets were spotless, nothing happened between them last night,” another chimed in.

“Seriously? I heard Barnaby was supposedly drugged last night. Just the two of them alone, and still nothing went down?” a third gasped.

“Wow, looks like Barnaby’s gentleman reputation is legit!” someone joked.

“Daisy is really hopeless. Even with everything set up, she still couldn’t make it happen,” one of them snarked.

Daisy was just about to step into Iris’s courtyard when she caught a bunch of maids gossiping in the hallway corner.

Her face went from red to pale in an instant. She marched over and snapped, “Gossiping about your masters out in the open? Where are your manners?”

The maids scattered the moment they saw Daisy, but someone grumbled under her breath, “You’re not even our master.”

Daisy clenched her fists, her anger simmering. ‘Ugh, these maids are just throwing their weight around because of who they work for!’

“Ms. Reese, you’re here! It’s cold out, come inside and warm up,” Martha Collins called out as she stepped out.

Martha was Iris’s personal maid.

Daisy took a deep breath to steady herself, then turned with her usual smile. “Alright, is Iris up yet?”

“Yes, she’s already up and waiting for you to have breakfast together,” Martha replied with a smile.

As they walked into the living room, a boy stepped out from behind the wall.

Kyson smirked, a mocking smile tugging at his lips.

‘Gentleman? Please. Barnaby’s into guys, plain and simple. Even if he’s drugged, he still can’t get it up for a woman!’ Kyson scoffed to himself.

‘Daisy’s such an idiot. Out of all the guys she could like, she just had to go for Barnaby, he thought.

“Aunt Iris, I’m here to have breakfast with you,” he said, turning and heading into the living room.

In the living room, Iris was just getting Daisy settled at the table when she spotted Kyson. Her face lit up. “Kyson, you’re here!”

She quickly told Martha to set another place at the table.

“I passed by a flower shop and saw these carnations, they looked so pretty, I had to bring you a bouquet,” Kyson said, pulling the pink carnations out from behind his back and handing them to her.

It was a move that always worked on Iris. Carnations were the “flower of motherhood,” and this little act of filial piety always made her feel like a proud mom.

“You’re such a thoughtful boy. Go wash up and join us for breakfast,” Iris said with a warm smile, accepting the flowers and passing them to Martha.

Kyson went to the kitchen to wash his hands, then came back and sat down next to Iris, facing Daisy across the table.

He gave Daisy a sly grin and suddenly said, “Ms. Reese, things didn’t go so well between you and Grand Uncle Barnaby last night, did they?”

Daisy had just managed to shove last night’s embarrassment out of her mind, only for Kyson to bring it up again. Her face fell, cheeks flushing. Why does he have to mention that?’ she thought, annoyed.

“Oh, you,” Iris teased Kyson with a fond smile, then turned to Daisy. “Uncle Barnaby didn’t give you any trouble last night,

did he?”

Thinking back to the awkwardness of last night, Daisy forced a smile and replied, “Barnaby is a true gentleman. We’re not at that point yet, but he understood what I meant and respected my wishes.”

“You don’t have to make excuses, Ms. Reese. Grand Uncle Barnaby’s just not into women, he likes men,” Kyson said, totally

blunt.

Daisy’s smile twisted, looking more like she was about to cry than anything else.

‘If only Barnaby really did like men, at least then I wouldn’t have to feel so embarrassed,’ Daisy thought with a bitter laugh at herself.

But reality?

It couldn’t be further from the truth.

She was the proud heiress of the Reese family, a genius who’d been spoiled her whole life. When had she ever been put through something this humiliating?

“Shut up,

what do you know!” Iris shot Kyson a playful glare, then turned to Daisy.

“He’s just a kid, don’t take it to heart. If Uncle Barnaby really liked men, there wouldn’t be all those rumors about him and women in Brynlock, right?” Iris said.

Daisy just fell silent.

Instead of feeling comforted, she just felt even worse.

“Last night really was a bit rushed, that was my oversight. Next time, we’ll try a different approach. But don’t worry, we all like you very much. Uncle Barnaby is yours,” Iris assured her.

Daisy’s expression finally eased a little. “Alright. I’ll check on your health in a bit.”

Iris could barely contain her excitement. Everything she’d done, all the effort to win Daisy over, was really just so the Nameless Healer would finally treat her.

‘After all this time, I’m finally going to be a mom!’ Iris thought, her heart racing with joy.
