Hannah rushed through the night, catching a flight to the border airport and then hurrying straight to the county hospital. By the time she arrived, it was already noon the next day.
Her neighbor Chloe Jones was sitting anxiously by the bed. Evelyn was completely out cold, her head wrapped in a stark white bandage, an oxygen mask strapped to her face, and an IV drip hooked up, lying motionless on the hospital bed.
“What happened?” Hannah asked as she hurried into the room.
“Hannah, you’re finally here!” Chloe said excitedly, grabbing Hannah’s hand.
“Hurry, can you check on Evelyn? She still hasn’t come to,” Chloe urged.
Hannah nodded and gave Evelyn a thorough check-up. She discovered a blood clot in Evelyn’s brain that was blocking the
flow.
‘How could anyone use such violence against someone her age? Are they even human?’ Hannah fumed inwardly.
“Who did this to her?” Hannah demanded.
“Yesterday, some loan sharks stormed into your house. They had an IOU with Evelyn’s fingerprint on it and started demanding money. When she couldn’t pay, they beat her until she passed out,” Chloe said, her voice trembling.
Hannah’s brow furrowed. “Loan sharks?”
‘How could Grandma end up owing loan sharks?’ Hannah thought, her mind spinning.
She sent Grandma thousands dollars every month to cover her bills.
And the last time Grandma came back with Susie from Scott Villa, Hannah had even handed her a bank card loaded with seven hundred grand, more than enough for them to live comfortably out in the mountains.
“Yeah, they said they’d be back in three days. If we don’t have 2 million dollars ready, they’ll cut off Evelyn’s hands and feet!” Chloe’s voice shook with fear.
“My brother went to the police, but they just shrugged and said, ‘If you owe money, you gotta pay up. But Evelyn’s always been careful with money. How could she owe loan sharks so much?” Chloe added, her voice breaking.
Chloe choked up, her fear obvious.
“It’s definitely that woman’s fault! Ever since Evelyn brought her back, it’s been nothing but trouble, no one’s had a moment’s peace, just then, a deep male voice called out from behind her.
Hannah turned around and saw a tall, muscular guy with bronzed skin standing in the doorway, clutching a white plastic bag with a takeout box inside. He looked seriously pissed off.
It was Chloe’s older brother, Joe Jones.
Chloe and Joe lost their parents when they were just kids, so they had to rely on each other to survive. They lived in the most remote part of Jones Village.
Back then, when Evelyn brought Hannah and escaped to Jones Village seeking refuge, the villagers were hostile and refused to accept them. But Chloe and Joe, always kind-hearted, took them in out of kindness.
Later, Evelyn helped many villagers with her medical expertise. Then they gradually earned their place in the village.
“Susie Scott?” Hannah repeated, frowning in disbelief.

Chapter 193
“Yeah, that’s her! I have no idea why Evelyn took her in, treated her for free, gave her food and a place to stay. But Susie?
“She’s all about imported latex mattresses, won’t wear anything unless it’s a brand name, and refuses to drink tap water, only wants that fancy mountain spring stuff,” Joe complained, his frustration obvious.
Joe was usually the straightforward, easygoing type, never one to sweat the small stuff. But just mentioning Susie was. enough to really piss him off, showing how much she’d gotten on his nerves.
Hannah nodded, finally getting it.
Susie had spent seventeen years living the high life with the Scott family. Suddenly having to live in a mountain village? Of course she couldn’t handle it. If she could’ve, she never would’ve clung to the Scotts in the first place.
“Where is she now?” Hannah asked.
“No clue. Ever since she could walk again, she’s been heading out all the time. Haven’t seen her around for a week,” Chloe said.
Hannah looked at Evelyn lying in the hospital bed, thinking, ‘Figures. Susie’s probably already bailed!’
“This is everything I could pull together, borrowed from the villagers and every bit of my own savings.
“It’s only 10 thousand, but take it for now. I’ll figure out how to get the rest in the next couple of days,” Joe said, his voice firm but anxious.
He fished out a bundle of bills wrapped in a worn black plastic bag from his coat pocket and handed it over to Hannah.
Joe made ends meet by hauling goods for mountain folks with his beat-up old truck, just so Chloe could stay in school.
Life was always tough for the siblings, but he still handed over his hard-earned savings without hesitation. Seeing this, Hannah felt a lump in her throat.
She pushed the money back toward Joe. “Thanks, but you really don’t need to worry about the money. I’ll handle it. You two should go home and get some rest, I’ll stay here.”
Chloe and Joe both knew Hannah got picked up by some wealthy people in the city last year.
But 2 million? That was such a crazy amount, they couldn’t even wrap their heads around what kind of family could just cough up 2 million like it was nothing.
Seeing how determined Hannah was, Joe could only take the money back.
He’d been up all night at the hospital, and then spent the whole morning running around trying to borrow money. He was dead tired, so he decided to head home and get some rest. But Chloe insisted on staying to help out.
Chloe was the same age as Hannah, and when they were kids, she used to study traditional medicine with Evelyn too. She might not have Hannah’s talent for healing, but when it came to herbal recipes, she had a real knack for it.
Hannah
gave Evelyn some acupuncture to break up the blood cloy, then scribbled down a herbal prescription, sent Chloe off to grab the ingredients, and told her to use the kitchen to cook up the medicine.
That evening, Evelyn finally woke up. After Hannah helped her drink the medicine, Evelyn looked much healthier, her strength was coming back, and she seemed way more alert.
Hannah still wasn’t completely at ease, so she kept Evelyn in the hospital for another day to keep an eye on her. Once she was sure Evelyn was really okay, she let her go home the next day.
Early the next morning, Joe came by in his truck to pick them up and drive them home.
Chapter 193
As soon as they arrived, before Hannah even got out of the car, Evelyn turned to Joe and said, “Joe, take Anna to the airport.
Today was the third day, the deadline set by the loan sharks. Evelyn didn’t want Hannah involved at all.
Those loan sharks were clearly acting on someone’s orders. Money was just a front, what they really wanted was her life.
Hannah instantly caught on to Evelyn’s plan, and her expression turned grim.
Joe didn’t catch on. “Huh? Is it really that urgent? Can’t we at least have lunch together before she leaves?”
“Yeat, it’s the New Year, let’s have a meal together! I’ll go cook right
Chloe chimed in.
Chloe picked up on what Evelyn was trying to do, but she still thought Hannah should stay. Ever since they were kids, Chloe had always believed Hannah was clever, she was sure Hannah would figure something out.
“I’m not leaving!” Hannah declared as she hopped out of the car and marched straight into the yard. She fished out the key from under the flowerpot by the door and let herself in.

The living room remained in shambles, left that way by the loan sharks on their last visit, with no one having had a chance to clean it up yet.
Evelyn couldn’t stop her in time, so she snapped, “If you’re not leaving, then what are you doing here? This isn’t the place for you, go back to the Scott family!”
“Where’s Susie?” Hannah spun around, her face icy as she stared Evelyn down.
Evelyn pressed her lips together, and the two of them stood there, locked in a tense, stubborn standoff, neither willing to back down.
“This has nothing to do with you,” Evelyn said, righting the chair that had been knocked over and sitting down with her back turned to Hannah.
Hannah looked at Evelyn’s frail, aged back, and her heart ached, yet she couldn’t help but find it a little endearing.
When she was a kid and made Evelyn mad, her grandma could never bring herself to scold her. She’d just turn away and sulk, refusing to say a word.
Hannah walked up and hugged Evelyn from behind.

“Susie’s fate means nothing to me. But she hurt you, there’s no way I’m letting that slide!” Hannah said, her voice unwavering.
Evelyn’s whole body trembled, her eyes growing wet. “Why do you always have to be so headstrong, child!”
Bang, suddenly, there was a loud crash outside. A bunch of guys in black stormed into the yard, waving their knives around like they owned the place.
Evelyn panicked and shoved Hannah behind her. “Quick, hide!”
