Six burly thugs, each wielding a long machete or a baseball bat, stood menacingly at the entrance of the hall.
“Whoa, Boss, we got ourselves a hottie,” one of the thugs said, checking out Hannah.
“No shit, I’m not blind!” their Boss named Marlon Kade spat. “I’m here to collect. Bringing a woman won’t change a damn thing!”
Marlon looked Hannah up and down, not bothering to hide his interest. She was gorgeous, her skin looked so soft, one could squeeze water out of it.
But pretty or not, it didn’t matter. He was just here to collect, even if it was New Year’s. Orders were orders, if he screwed this up, everyone’s New Year would be ruined.
“Old hag, you hear me? Stop with the useless crap. Is the money ready or not?” snarled a scruffy guy, threatening Evelyn with
his baseball bat.
Hannah stepped forward, shielding Evelyn behind her, and with a swift kick, sent the bat flying. “Don’t point that thing at her!”
The scruffy guy was stunned by Hannah’s fearless move. He lost his grip on the bat, dropping it to the floor. Instantly, the other thugs closed in with knives and bats, one of them pressing a gleaming machete to Hannah’s neck.
Evelyn saw the glinting blade and cried out, “Let her go! This has nothing to do with her.”
Marlon sized up Hannah, surprised by her guts. Even with a blade at her throat, she looked totally unfazed, made him take her seriously for a second.
But letting her go? Not a chance.
“Where’s the money?!” Marlon demanded.
“Let me see the IOU first,” Hannah said, cool as ever.
Her fingers twitched, and a needle slipped between her fingertips.
Evelyn caught on to what Hannah was about to do and gripped her arm tight, shooting her a look that said, ‘Don’t do anything stupid.’
Marlon pulled out an IOU: a loan for 1 three million, with 1 million in interest. The ID info matched Evelyn, but the signature was clearly someone else’s, even though the fingerprint was definitely hers.
Evelyn’s heart sank. It was obvious, Susie had used Evelyn’s ID to borrow the money, and had even pressed her finger onto the document while she was asleep.
“Don’t you dare touch them!” Just then, Joe stormed in, brandishing a kitchen knife, with Chloe right behind him, clutching a frying pan.
As soon as Joe stepped inside and saw the knife at Hannah’s throat, his anger deflated. Worried they might hurt her, he quickly pulled out a wad of cash from his jacket.
“Leave them alone! I’ve got money!” he shouted, tossing the cash at Marlon.
Marlon caught the money, weighed it in his hand, then flung it back at Joe. “I want five million! You think this pocket change is enough? If you don’t have the cash, stop playing the hero and get lost!”
The money scattered across the floor. Joe’s veins popped on his forehead, he’d rather go down fighting than be humiliated.
Chapter 194
He gripped the kitchen knife and swung it at Marlon.
They were out in the middle of nowhere, far from any help. If calling the cops was useless, then he had no choice but to risk
it all.
“Ah!” Chloe screamed as one of the thugs grabbed her by the neck.
“Move again and I’ll snap her neck!” the thug snarled.
Joe froze, his eyes blazing with fury, the kitchen knife still clutched in front of him.
‘Seriously?’ Hannah thought, speechless.
‘Did you guys show up just to get yourselves wrecked?’ Hannah couldn’t help but think.
The tension in the room ratcheted up another notch, making things even more dangerous.
If it was just Evelyn, Hannah could’ve gone all out. But now with Chloe caught up in this mess, it was way harder to make a move. Joe was tough, sure, but one guy against six? He’d just get jumped.
Only brains would get them out of this.
“Joe, chill out. Don’t do anything stupid,” Hannah said, keeping her cool.
She slipped the needle from her fingers, fished a bank card out of her pocket, and used it to nudge the blade away. Then she shoved the card toward Marlon. “Hand over the IOU. There’s 2 million on this card.”
He just eyed the card, refusing to take it. “How the hell am I supposed to know there’s really 2 million on there? I want cash!”
Hannah shot back, “Then go check it if you don’t believe me!”
“It takes at least an hour to get to town and another hour back. By the time we return, you guys will be long gone!” sneered a weasel-faced thug.
‘Seriously?’ Hannah thought, speechless.
“Why not just send one of you to check, and the rest stay here?” Chloe couldn’t help but suggest.
“Nope, none of us except Boss has a driver’s license,” one of the thugs replied
‘Wow, now you care about the law?’ Hannah thought, rolling her eyes.
“What exactly do you want?” Hannah glared at Marlon, her voice icy.
All these lame excuses, clearly, they were just trying to mess with them.
“Time’s up. Since you don’t have 2 million in cash, I guess I’ll just have to make her pay so I can answer to my boss,” Marlon
threatened.
He leveled the machete at Evelyn, the blade catching the light with a menacing gleam.
“You!” Joe tightened his grip on the kitchen knife.
Hannah’s eyes narrowed. “So all this debt talk is just an excuse? You guys came here to kill, didn’t you?”
“Cut the crap! Hand over the old lady!” Marlon roared.
With a swing of his machete, the tension snapped, turning the standoff into a direct clash.

Chapter 194
Just then, with a loud bang, the roof beam above suddenly crashed open, a shadowy figure dropped down, taking Marlon
down in one swift move.
Right after, a squad of bodyguards in black suits and sunglasses stormed in from outside, taking down the rest of the thugs
in no time.

Hannah shielded Evelyn and darted to the side. Chloe was already freed, and Joe stood protectively in front of her, kitchen knife in hand, watching the bodyguards warily as they barged in.
“Ms. Carter, sorry we’re late,” the lead bodyguard walked up to Hannah, removed his shades, and spoke respectfully.
Hannah recognized him, she’d seen him before; he was one of Barnaby’s men.
She nodded, glancing at the thugs who’d been taken down. “Get them out of here and make them talk, find out who’s behind all this.”
“Yes, Ms. Carter,” the lead bodyguard replied.
With the thugs dragged away, peace finally returned to the living room. Chloe and Joe started tidying up, while Hannah helped Evelyn, still shaken, back to her room to rest.
The room was a wreck, the thugs had trashed everything. Hannah cleared off the bed, helped Evelyn lie down, then went out, grabbed some ginseng, made a quick water, and brought it in for Evelyn to drink.
Evelyn took a few sips, her color coming back. “I’m okay now, you should head home,” she said.
“No way, you’re coming with me,” Hannah said. When Evelyn started to protest, Hannah cut her off, “Wait, just listen. I’m planning to open a traditional medicine clinic in Kinswood, and I need you there.”
Evelyn opened her mouth, but the words “I’m not going” just wouldn’t come out.
Hannah knew her grandma too well, if she just asked Evelyn to move to Kinswood, she’d never agree. But if she said she needed her, Evelyn could never say no.
Evelyn didn’t agree. She looked at Hannah and asked, “You still haven’t given up, have you?”
Hannah nodded. “Yeah.”
“Silly girl, why are you so stubborn?” Evelyn let out a weary sigh.
She’d raised Hannah through tears and hardship, their bond ran deep. If Hannah just wanted to open a clinic, Evelyn would go without hesitation. But if it was all for revenge…
“I’m not going!” Evelyn sat up, her voice steely. “Forget about all this. Just stay at the Scott family and live like the pampered heiress you are! Stop getting involved in this mess, you’re not part of the Thole family anymore!”
