Chapter 22
Felicity had always been meek and submissive; she wouldn’t even dare to breathe loudly in front of Aurelia.
But today, for Hannah’s sake, she actually made demands to Aurelia, which made Susie standing nearby feel the threat all over again.
“Really?” Aurelia asked suspiciously.
She looked at Hannah with no trace of the obvious disdain she had shown yesterday.
“This girl from the slums is actually smart, scoring a perfect grade. Must be the Scott family genes. eldest grandson is proof enough, Aurelia thought.
“Mr. Drumm announced the results personally. Everyone at Cavalor knows about it.
The genius
“I’ve already decided to host a dinner for the entire Cavalor student body and faculty tomorrow. I even notified the reporters,” Dorian said excitedly.
The moment Aurelia heard about inviting the whole school, her heart sank. “How much is that going to cost?”
On the surface, the Scott family’s finances looked shiny and prosperous, but the reality wasn’t so optimistic.
A small party would be one thing, but inviting the entire Cavalor school meant there must be tens of thousands of people.
And these students come from high-status families, there was no way they’d settle for ordinary home-cooked meals.
When Aurelia roughly calculated the expenses, she nearly went pale.
“No matter the cost, this money has to be spent. This is the perfect opportunity to prove the Scott family’s wealth and cultural standing.
“I’m sure this grand event will finally get the Scott family onto Brynlock’s list of elite families. More business will naturally come our way after that,” Dorian said passionately.
He already had it all planned out. He wondered, ‘If we don’t have the cash, I’ll mortgage this villa and take out a loan from the bank.
‘We’ll throw a grand celebration and invite a swarm of reporters to cover it.
‘This will make the Scott family famous, and we can simultaneously advertise Scott Group’s business.
‘The clients will come knocking. Within six months, we’ll earn back the money and redeem the house.”
Aurelia had spent her early years farming in the countryside,
Since the Scott family suddenly got rich, they’d become bragging nouveau riche who had no clue about running a company.
Dorian’s confident talk made it seem like they were about to strike gold.
Plus, it was all for the Scott family’s reputation. Aurelia felt this plan sounded promising.
“Then let’s do it your way,” Aurelia agreed and then looked at Hannah. “You can have Lucian’s study, but there’s one condition; you have to change your last name back to Scott.”
Only if she reverted to the Scott surname would tomorrow’s celebration truly honor the Scott family, not just the Scott family’s adopted daughter.
Aurelia’s mind was racing with plans.
“Will you officially announce me as the Scott heiress?” Hannah asked.
Susie, overhearing their talk about throwing a party for Hannah, felt her own standing in the Scott family slipping away.
Hannah’s question set off alarm bells in her head. ‘She really wants to snatch the Scott heiress spot back,’ she thought.
The thought of that dilapidated house in town made her recoil.
She would never, ever return to that slum.
Taking advantage of a moment when no one was watching, she quietly slipped away to make a phone call.
In the living room, Aurelia was momentarily at a loss for words after Hannah’s question.
“Haven’t I already told you? The Baker family is interested in Susie.
“We can’t announce you as the Scott heiress,” Dorian said with clear displeasure in his tone.
The truth was, to maintain good business relations with the Baker family, the Scott family arranged Susie’s marriage alliance, especially since Jasper had taken a liking to Susie.
If it became public that Hannah was the real Scott heiress, the Bakers would never accept a girl from the slums as Jasper’s wife.
If Jasper insisted on marrying Susie, the Scott family would lose that connection.
So until business boomed, Hannah’s true identity could never be revealed.
“Then there’s no need for me to change my last name. No matter what I’m called, I’m still just the Scott family’s adopted daughter,” Hannah said flatly.
‘They only want the Scott family name to sound good, but don’t want to take any risks. What a clever calculation, Hannah thought.
Dorian and Aurelia were momentarily speechless, stunned by her words.
It was true that publicly acknowledging Hannah as an adopted daughter was their mistake,
But for the sake of the Scott family’s interests, they were absolutely determined not to reveal that secret.
“That’s not true. No matter what your last name is, you’re still my precious daughter,” Felicity tugged gently at Hannah’s sleeve and whispered.
Hannah looked back at Felicity. Within the entire Scott family, only her mother truly cared about her.
Facing the love she had missed for over a decade, Hannah didn’t know how to respond. She simply nodded quietly.
Gathering her courage, Felicity went ahead and rearranged Lucian’s study on the third floor back into a bedroom for Hannah without waiting for Aurelia’s approval.
When Lucian came home and found his study taken over by Hannah again, he angrily pushed away the quilt Felicity was arranging.
“No way. This is my study. I won’t let her live here,” Lucian shouted.
Then he stormed off to call Aurelia over, throwing a tantrum. “Grandma, how could you give my study to her?
“That girl comes back and immediately fights me for my room. Next, she’ll try to take the Scott family’s property from me. I won’t let her.”
Lucian’s words hit a nerve.
Aurelia cared about the Scott family’s reputation, but she was also deeply biased toward males.
In her eyes, the Scott family’s assets could only be inherited by the grandson, not handed over to a granddaughter.
‘Hannah comes back and takes Lucian’s study. Does that mean she’ll try to grab the Scott family fortune next?’ Aurelia thought.
Her gaze toward Hannah instantly shifted to suspicion and caution.
After listening for a moment, Hannah said, “The Scott family’s assets total three hundred million dollars?”
Her tone was indifferent but somehow sharp and grating to hear.
‘Three hundred million? Even ordinary wealthy families might not have that much. And the Scott family is still only on the edge of high society,’ Aurelia thought.
“What do you mean by that?” Aurelia’s face darkened.
Though the Scott family’s real assets were only a few million dollars, it was still money that someone like this rural girl, Hannah, would never earn in her lifetime.
“Do you know how long three hundred million dollars can last? You actually want three hundred million?
“So you really are here to fight me for the family fortune. Grandma, please kick her out,” Lucian shouted at Aurelia, his neck stiff with anger.
Hannah said nothing.
Felicity sensed the tension rising and worried that Aurelia would favor her grandson again and take the room back. She hurried to smooth things over.
“Lucian, who told you Hannah wants to fight you for the family assets?” Felicity crouched down and asked
him.
Lucian was only seven years old. Though mischievous and clever, he wouldn’t really have such thoughts.
Sure enough, when asked, Lucian stammered, “W-who else would say that? I knew it. I’m not stupid.”
Hannah glanced at him. How foolish.
And as for who in this family could be encouraging this foolish little brother, it was obvious.
“I’m not interested in the Scott family’s assets. Don’t bother me if it’s nothing important,” she said, then slammed the door shut.
Aurelia’s face darkened further.
If it weren’t for the Scott family’s reputation and tomorrow’s planned party, she wouldn’t have let Hannah live on the third floor at all.
‘Once she’s an adult, I’ll sell Hannah off and use the money to support the Scott family,’ Aurelia thought.
