Chapter 224 Double Standards

Chapter 224 Double Standards

Hannah was by the lake, taking selfies with Candy, while Barnaby and Tristan sat on the grass, chatting and soaking up the

chill vibes.

From a distance, Hannah spotted Christopher pulling Joe aside for a private chat.

She remembered that Joe was never really a fan of Christopher, but today, for some reason, he was acting super friendly toward him.

“Oh, I totally get it. After hanging out these past couple of days, they’ve developed some serious comrade vibes,” Candy

said.

Hannah just stared at her, lost for words.

‘Or maybe he got bribed or threatened?’ Hannah thought to herself.

“Take some shots of me, will ya?” Christopher demanded as he stomped over and shoved the camera into Hannah’s hands.

Candy immediately backed away, putting a good nine feet between herself and the scene.

Christopher thought, ‘This girl’s cool, she actually knows to give me some space.’

Then he started posing by the lake, trying his best to show off his manly charm for Hannah.

This time, since Barnaby and Joe, for once, didn’t come over to shut him down, Christopher started striking poses with even more enthusiasm. Sure, he wasn’t as tall as Barnaby, but he was still rocking some abs.

Click, click, click.

Christopher posed for a solid half hour before bounding over, flipping his hair with a cocky grin. “So, how do I look? Pretty damn handsome, right?”

“See for yourself,” Hannah said, handing him the camera.

Christopher took it with a big grin, but the moment he saw the photos, his face fell.

“What the hell is this crap you shot?” Christopher burst out.

Hannah just shrugged, “It’s you…”

Yeah, she used to suck at taking pictures, but after Barnaby gave her some hands-on lessons last year, she’d seriously leveled up.

Even Barnaby never complained about her shots.

She retorted, “I just captured you exactly as you are.”

“I’m six feet tall, and you made me look like I’m barely five-three! Seriously, do look like that to you?” Christopher totally lost

Hannah glanced at Christopher, then back at the photos on the camera.

She coughed awkwardly. ‘Yeah, maybe I did mess up a bit…’

Just then, Barnaby walked over, and Hannah handed him the camera so he could check it out too.

Barnaby glanced at the photos and said, “These look great. He’s just nitpicking. Don’t waste your time on people who can’t be pleased. Come on, take some pics of me.”

With that, he took Hannah’s hand and led her away.

Christopher just gaped, totally out of words.

‘Me? Nitpicking?’ Christopher was totally baffled.

‘Not satisfied? For real?’ He couldn’t believe it.

‘Damn, is Barnaby blind or am I?’ Christopher thought, totally baffled.

Christopher finally got it. No wonder Candy bailed earlier!

‘No wonder nobody bothered to stop me from going all out with the poses!

‘So Hannah’s basically a walking photo disaster!’ he thought to himself.

‘Fine, go ahead and shoot! I can’t wait to see how Barnaby’s disaster skills manage to ruin your looks!’ Christopher thought. Barnaby didn’t rush Hannah to start snapping Successfully unlocked!ved her again how to frame a shot before

finally handing her the camera.

Hannah listened, and her brain was like, ‘Got it, I totally get it now.’

But when it was time to actually take the photos, her hands were like, ‘Nope, still clueless.’

Even so, the photos turned out at least looking normal.

Christopher leaned in for a peek and yelled, “Damn, I just realized, your clumsy photo skills are totally targeted! You only mess up when it’s me in front of the lens!”

“It’s not a photography issue, it’s the model,” Barnaby said confidently.

After comparing the shots of both guys, Hannah nodded, backing him up. “Exactly! I knew I wasn’t that hopeless with a camera anymore.”

Christopher was left speechless.

Dinner was a barbecue by the lake. Joe went to the nearby supermarket to grab all the tools and food.

After what happened last time, Barnaby wasn’t about to let Hannah anywhere near the grill. He took over the cooking himself.

Seeing Barnaby get busy, Christopher jumped in too, claiming his own spot. Whatever Barnaby grilled, Christopher grilled the same thing. Joe hung around, helping out whenever needed.

Tristan stepped aside to make a call, while Hannah and Candy just lounged on the picnic blanket, happily munching away. Barnaby walked over with a few meat skewers. “Give these a try.”

Hannah grabbed one and took a bite.

“Is it good?” Barnaby asked.

She nodded and offered him the skewer. Barnaby took a bite right where she’d already eaten.

Seeing this, Christopher hustled over with his own skewer. “Come on, try mine.”

Hannah just stared at the charcoal-black skewer and didn’t even reach for it.

“Come on, eat it! What, you think it’s poisoned?” Christopher pushed, then grabbed a skewer himself, took a bite, and instantly spat it out. “Bleh!”

Then he snatched a skewer from Barnaby’s plate, took a bite, and his eyes lit up.

“I swear I grilled it exactly like you did, how come yours tastes way better?” he complained, taking another bite.

‘Damn, this is actually good!’ Christopher had to admit, totally hooked.

“Guess that means no matter how hard you try, you’ll never measure up to me,” Barnaby said with a deadpan smirk.

Christopher was left speechless.

Suddenly, his skewer tasted like nothing.

After getting defeated over and over, Christopher started doubting his life choices.

‘Seriously, how come this army guy is a pro at literally everything?’ Christopher thought, totally baffled.

Christopher was fuming, especially when he saw Barnaby, whose hands were perfectly clean, pretending they were dirty just so Hannah would feed him water. That just made Christopher even more pissed.

‘Man, that guy is so damn sneaky!’ Christopher thought.

‘Can’t Hannah see what he’s doing?’ he wondered.

‘Or maybe she actually likes guys who act all sly?’ Christopher couldn’t help but think.

‘Fine, two can play at that game!’ Christopher thought, feeling fired up.

When Hannah grabbed a little bucket and went to get some water from the lake, Christopher rushed over to lend a hand.

“Can you swim?” he suddenly asked.

“I’m pretty good at it,” Hannah replied.

“I can’t,” Christopher admitted.

Hannah just stared at him, baffled.

She was just wondering why he suddenly brought this up when, out of nowhere, she heard a loud splash behind her. Christopher had tumbled into the lake and was flailing around, putting on a desperate show at the surface.

Hannah had just set down the bucket when, in a blur, someone shot past her from behind.

“Stay put, I got this!” Joe shouted, whipping off his shirt and diving into the water with a splash.

Christopher was busy faking a struggle in the water, waiting for Hannah to jump in and save him, only to see Joe leap in instead.

And to top it off, after Joe dragged him out of the lake, Hannah was right there, instructing Joe to give Christopher rescue breaths.

Just as Joe was about to go in for the mouth-to-mouth, Christopher quickly shoved him away and shot up into a sitting position.

A chilly breeze blew by, making Christopher shiver.

So his little cold turned into a serious one, and he couldn’t even enjoy the meteor shower that night, just had to wrap himself up in a blanket by the fire, watching all the couples cozy up together.

He played a stupid game and ended up with a stupid prize.

Meanwhile, on the other side….

Hannah was lying with her head resting on Barnaby’s arm, the two of them sprawled out on a picnic blanket on the grass, just staring up at the Milky Way above.

Strings of twinkling fairy lights were looped around the area, casting a soft, magical glow.

After last night’s adventure, Hannah was way more comfortable with the whole camping vibe. Plus, with a once-in-a- lifetime meteor shower happening tonight, tons of people were out here, so it wasn’t even that dark.

The night breeze was chilly, but with Barnaby right next to her, it felt cozy. ‘Who cares about the cold when you’ve got your favorite person by your side?’ Hannah thought, feeling all warm inside.

As the meteor shower streaked across the night sky, everything lit up. Cheers erupted all around, and Hannah closed her eyes to make a wish.

‘I hope this happiness could last forever,’ Hannah thought to herself.

Just as she opened her eyes, Barnaby suddenly pulled her in and rolled them out of the way.

Before she could even process what was happening, a bullet struck the exact spot on the picnic blanket where they’d just been lying.
