Chapter 225 A Thrilling Assault

Chapter 225 A Thrilling Assault

Barnaby whipped his head toward the direction of the gunfire, right at the woods at his three o’clock.

At that moment, several SUVS burst out of the trees, racing wildly across the grass. Masked men in black hoods leaned out the windows, unleashing a hail of bullets from their submachine guns.

“Ah!”

The sudden assault threw everyone on the grassland into chaos. People screamed and scattered in every direction, some getting hit and collapsing on the spot.

Barnaby yanked Hannah to her feet, quickly digging the bullet that had pierced the mat out of the dirt. They ducked behind the tent, and Barnaby was just about to call Tristan.

“Get in!” Tristan shouted as he pulled up in the SUV, with Candy throwing open the back door.

Barnaby shoved Hannah into the SUV first. She tried to make room for him, but he slammed the door shut before she could pull him in.

Just as the door closed, a bullet slammed into the window.

The metallic clang made Candy scream, but when she saw the glass was still intact, it hit her, it was bulletproof!

In the blink of an eye, Barnaby jumped into the passenger seat. The three SUVS behind them had already caught up, crushing the tents beneath their wheels.

“Hold on tight!” Tristan floored it, swerving around people as they sped forward. Bullets rattled against the rear of the car, the rapid-fire clatter sounding just like rain pelting the windows.

The grassland roads were rough, and with the SUV flying along, it was like riding a roller coaster, bouncing and jolting all over the place.

Candy clung to Hannah’s arm, her voice trembling with excitement. “Even filming action scenes wasn’t this wild!”

That was when Hannah noticed Candy was the only one in the back seat, Joe Jones and Christopher were missing.

“Where are those two?” Hannah asked, glancing around.

“No time to grab them,” Tristan said, his voice tense.

Hannah looked over her shoulder and saw the three SUVS sticking to them like glue. ‘Looks like we’re the ones they’re after. Joe and Christopher should be safe, she thought.

Just then, her phone rang, it was Joe.

“Hannah, where are you guys? Three cars just showed up and started shooting!” Joe blurted out.

Before Joe could finish, Christopher snatched the phone away and said, “That car ahead is yours, right? Hey! Are you in the car? Has Barnaby died yet? Beg me, maybe I can help you!”

Hannah was at a loss for words.

“Can you not mess around right now?!” Joe snatched the phone back. “We’re fine. They’re all after you guys. Hang in there, I’ve already called the cops.”

Until help arrived, all they could do was look out for themselves.

“Got it. You guys stay safe,” Hannah said as she hung up, then looked back to check the situation behind them.

Seeing their ride was bulletproof, the goons changed tactics. They slammed the gas, all three SUVS ramming them from every angle, trying to shove them right into the lake.

These guys were out for blood.

“They’ve got a death wish, pulling this kind of crap here,” Tristan spat, then shot a look at Barnaby. “Barnaby, you got them yet?”

As soon as they got in, Barnaby popped open the glove compartment, pulled out a control panel, and hit a switch. Instantly, the roof-mounted auto-turret whirred to life and rose up.

The gun’s camera fed straight to the control panel, but with the vehicle bouncing like crazy and only a remote view to work with, aiming was a nightmare.

Out of three shots, only one nailed the front tir Successfully unlockedd sending the vehicle screeching to a halt. Barnaby seized the moment, swiveling the turret remotely and my on several more rounds. The last two SUVs chasing them skidded to a stop, one after the other.

But the thugs weren’t giving up. A bunch of big guys in black hoods jumped out, opening fire with their submachine guns, spraying bullets at the car.

Suddenly, their ride lurched hard to one side, shuddering violently, and within seconds, it came to a stop.

They’d blown a tire.

“Damn it!” Tristan slammed the steering wheel, grabbed a gun from the overhead compartment, unbuckled his seatbelt, and yelled, “Let’s take them on!”

“There’s too many of them, and we’re low on ammo,” Barnaby held Tristan back, his voice tense.

Sure, this was a George Patton SUV, but it wasn’t exactly military-grade. With only a handful of spare bullets and two girls on board, going full Rambo was out of the question.

Barnaby glanced at his phone. “Rescue’s on the way. Hang in there, don’t be afraid!”

Those last words were meant for Hannah in the back seat.

His face was deadly serious, his aura rock-solid, and his eyes were razor-sharp, totally different from his usual laid-back

vibe.

Hannah nodded.

Anyone would be scared out of their wits in a mess like this, and Hannah was no exception.

Candy was clinging to Hannah’s arm, her whole body trembling uncontrollably.

Still, with Barnaby by her side, Hannah couldn’t help but feel a strange sense of security.

Suddenly, the thugs were right on them, hammering the windows with wild force.

All of them had black hoods pulled tight, only their blue eyes visible.

Just then, a helicopter tore through the night sky. The side door slid open, and two snipers hung out the open door, dropping every thug clinging to the windows with just a handful of shots.

Police sirens wailed in the distance, growing louder by the second until the whole place was crawling with cops.

Once it was clear, Barnaby and the crew got out of the SUV, only to see all the thugs lying dead on the ground.

With their job done, the helicopter crew killed the lights and disappeared into the darkness like ghosts.

But Hannah still caught sight of the special emblem on the helicopter, that was the Scepter House’s mark!

She immediately glanced at Barnaby. ‘Wait, did he really call in the Scepter House for backup?’ Hannah’s heart skipped a

beat.

Barnaby crouched down, snatched a submachine gun off one of the dead thugs, and field-stripped it with practiced hands.

He popped a bullet out of the magazine, then pulled out the one he’d dug up from the dirt earlier, comparing them side by side in his palm.

The two bullets were different sizes, the one from the grass was smaller, looked like it came from a sniper rifle.

‘Damn, Barnaby thought, ‘so there’s not just one crew after us, looks like we’ve got two hit squads gunning for our heads.’

He heard footsteps coming and slipped the bullets into his pocket. When he turned and saw it was Hannah, his guard dropped instantly.

“Did that freak you out?” Barnaby wrapped his arm around Hannah, guiding her away from the bodies so she wouldn’t have to see the mess.

Hannah shook her head, her lips quivering as she murmured, “Barnaby…”

“Hannah!” Joe and Christopher broke through the police tape and rushed over. When they saw she was safe, both of them let out a sigh of relief.

Hannah bit back the words she was about to say, realizing this wasn’t the right time.

Barnaby’s team arrived as well. Tristan stuck around to help the cops handle the mess, while Barnaby checked Hannah and the others into a nearby hotel.

After Hannah finally drifted off to sleep, he posted Ronin and his men outside the door, taking shifts to keep watch, then slipped out quietly in the dead of night.

The next day.

Hannah slept in until ten, and when she woke up, she realized Barnaby was nowhere to be seen, he’d snuck out in the middle of the night and hadn’t returned.

At the hotel lunch table, the vibe was dead silent and heavy. Not a single soul had gotten a decent night’s sleep after what happened, and everyone looked like they’d been run over by a truck.

“Ms. Carter, Barnaby told me to tell you not to worry. Those thugs last night were just hired guns, they were after Barnaby, not you. The mastermind’s already been found, and once everything’s wrapped up, Barnaby’ll come back for you,” Ronin

said.

He could see the worry written all over Hannah’s face, so he just repeated what Barnaby had told him to say.

Hannah wasn’t sure if she should believe him, but if it was true, she knew Barnaby was probably just trying to keep her out

of harm’s way.

If she insisted on going after him, it would only distract him. So she just nodded and quietly ate her food, keeping her thoughts to herself.

After everything that happened last night, no one brought up the idea of continuing the trip.

Ronin took care of the tickets and drove all four of them to the airport, getting them ready to fly back to Kinswood.

The ride was still heavy and awkwardly quiet, and Christopher finally snapped, grumbling, “Come on, nobody died! Why’s everyone sitting here like it’s a damn funeral?”

He poked Hannah with his finger and said, “And you, my guys were the ones who saved you last night! Can’t you at least crack a smile for yours truly? If Barnaby bites it, you’ve still got me, don’t you?”
