Chapter 229 Surprise Attack
Chapter 229 Surprise Attack
Early the next morning, Hannah got up on her own for once, without Barnaby’s usual reminders.
Barnaby was surprised when Hannah walked over, wrapped her arms around his neck, and pecked him on the cheek. “Let me drive you to work. I’ll drop by the Scott Villa afterward.”
Barnaby was heading to the Scepter House today, not Ascent Ventures, so it wasn’t exactly on the way.
But since he’d already decided to keep his real identity hidden from Hannah, he wasn’t about to blow his cover
now.
“Sure,” he replied.
After breakfast, Ronin drove, taking Hannah from Kinswood to Brynlock. He dropped her off at the Scott Villa first, then headed to the Scepter House.
Hannah walked into the Scott family’s yard, took a few steps, then glanced back and saw the car had already left. She turned around and walked back out.
Lucian, backpack slung over his shoulder and yawning, stepped out of the house and spotted Hannah about to get into the car at the gate. He instantly snapped awake.
“Hannah…” he rushed over, calling out.
But Hannah didn’t hear him, and the car pulled away with her inside.
“Lucian, where are you going?” Felicity asked as she came outside.
“I just saw Hannah come home!” Lucian yelled.
Felicity’s eyes lit up as she glanced toward the gate. Arthur and Dorian, who were about to head out, hurried over. Even Aurelia got up quickly, asking Cici for help.
The whole family leaned forward, all eyes glued to the gate.
But there wasn’t a soul in sight at the entrance.
“But she left again,” Lucian explained.
“April Fool’s was over a month ago. Are we still pulling the ‘boy who cried wolf’ routine? Seriously, how childish can you get?” Arthur rolled his eyes at him.
“No way! She really did come back! If you don’t believe me, I’ll call her right now and prove it!” Lucian shot back.
Lucian pulled out his phone in a hurry and called Hannah right away.
He tried three times, but none of the calls connected.
Lucian just stared at his phone, stunned.
“Keep lying and I’ll dock your allowance! Alright, break it up, get back to whatever you were doing,” Arthur said, clearly not buying it.
Lucian protested desperately, “No, I’m not! I swear I’m telling the truth!”
But nobody believed him. Lucian gritted his teeth in frustration. “Just watch, I’ll prove I’m not making this up!”

At the café, Hannah met up with Ethan and filled him in on the clues Iris had given her yesterday. She also showed him the video she’d recorded.
“Howard Thole?” Ethan frowned. “He’s the CEO of the Thole Group’s headquarters. Without solid evidence, we can’t just call him in for questioning. We need to keep digging and find something concrete.”
Hannah nodded. “Iris really cares about her child, so she probably wouldn’t lie. But we can’t take her word as gospel. All we can say is, she knows more about this case than we thought.”
“Exactly. You’ve already tipped them off, so don’t make any sudden moves. Just let me handle things from

here,” Ethan said.
“Alright,” Hannah nodded. “Any updates on your side lately?”
Ethan shook his head. “Not yet. They’re being super careful. Ever since Gemma got taken out, it’s been radio silence.”
“But the clues you just gave me are really useful. Since they’re keeping quiet, we can stir things up a bit and see if we can draw them out.”
Hannah was thinking the same thing. She glanced at him, and they both exchanged a knowing smile.
As Hannah stepped out of the café, she finally saw that Lucian had been blowing up her phone with messages.
Lucian: [Did you come home? I swear I saw you!]
[Where are you? Why won’t you answer your phone?!]
[Pick up already!]
[Seriously, would it kill you to just answer?]
[If you keep ignoring me, I’m not talking to you anymore!]
[That’s it! I’m not talking to you ever again! So there!]
[Goodbye!]
Hannah was completely lost.
Hannah: [Sorry, I was busy and missed your messages. Yeah, I was home.]
At Cavalor School, Class 1 of Grade 1, the homeroom teacher was teaching as usual.
Lucian, sitting in the middle row, felt his phone buzz. He checked it, then suddenly jumped up, cutting the teacher off.
“Lucian, what are you doing?!” the teacher frowned, clearly annoyed.
“I’m not feeling well, I need to go home,” Lucian said quickly. Before the teacher could even react, he grabbed his phone and dashed out of the classroom.
Then, while the security guard wasn’t paying attention, he dashed out of the school gate like the wind and caught a ride home.
On the way, he couldn’t wait to screenshot Hannah’s reply and blast it in the family group chat.
Lucian: [See? I told you I wasn’t lying!]
Five minutes went by, and not a single person replied.
He mentioned everyone in the group again, still hoping someone would notice.
By the time the taxi pulled up to the Scott Villa, still no one had replied.
Lucian just stared at his phone, speechless.
It wasn’t until he walked in and saw everyone crowded around Hannah that he finally got it. Turned out, nobody was paying him any attention.
“Weren’t you supposed to be in class? What are you doing back home?” Hannah was the first to spot Lucian at the door.
“Why do you care? If I want to come home, I will! Dad and Arthur ditched work too!” Lucian shot back, clearly annoyed.
Hannah couldn’t help but find his stubborn attitude kind of cute. She waved him over. “Come here.”
“Fine, I’m just here for the dog!” Lucian grumbled, but still shuffled over, dragging his feet.
Hannah fished out a gift bag from behind her. “Brought you something.”
Lucian’s eyes lit up and he grabbed it right away. It was heavier than he expected.
His sister hardly ever brought him real gifts, so all his early-morning grumpiness disappeared in a flash.

“Alright, since you got me a present, I’m not gonna unfriend you… for now,” he said, trying to sound tough but totally failing.
Grinning from ear to ear, he opened the bag and found four books inside: Java, C/C++, Perl, and LISP, all hacker language books.
Lucian just stared at the books, totally speechless.
‘What’s she trying to do, give me homework for life?’ he thought, confused.
‘I haven’t even finished the last one yet!’ he muttered to himself.
Hannah had things to take care of that afternoon, but the whole family gathered around and shared a cheerful breakfast together.
By 11:30, Hannah packed herself some lunch and grabbed a cab to Ascent Ventures.
John Perez happened to step out of the executive elevator, eyes going wide in surprise when he spotted Hannah walking in. He pulled out his phone and dialed right away.
“Mr. Thole, Ms. Carter just showed up at the office!” John blurted out.
Barnaby was at the Scepter House dealing with business when he got the call. He shot to his feet. “Tell her I’m out right now, not sure when I’ll be back. Have her call me.”
“Got it,” John replied, hanging up. But when he turned around, he saw the receptionist already heading over to greet Hannah.
“Ms. Carter, are you here to see Mr. Thole? He,” the receptionist started.
“Ms. Carter, sorry, but Mr. Thole had to step out unexpectedly,” John cut in, practically flying over to stop the receptionist mid-sentence. The poor girl jumped in surprise.
“John,” Hannah said, a little startled as she recognized him.
“No worries, I’ll just head up and wait for him,” she said.
Then she turned to the receptionist. “Can you swipe me in for the elevator?”
John quickly blocked their way, trying to play it cool. “Mr. Thole might not be back today. Why don’t you give him a call and see?”
Hannah raised an eyebrow, then nodded. “Okay. I’ll head up first.”
John knew if he kept trying to stop her, he’d just look more suspicious, so he stepped aside. As soon as Hannah got in the elevator, he fired off another message to Barnaby.
Hannah plopped down at Barnaby’s desk, spun around in his chair for a second, then pulled out her phone and called him.
“Barnaby, I brought you lunch, but they said you weren’t here. When are you coming back?” she said, sounding a little disappointed.
Barnaby glanced at the schedule Axel handed over, he had a meeting with the ten elders at two, and there was no way he could leave.
“I won’t be back at the office this afternoon. Sorry you made the trip for nothing. I’ll come find you tonight,” Barnaby replied, his voice gentle.
Hearing he wasn’t coming back, Hannah’s fingers Inched toward the power button on his computer, a mischievous glint in her eyes…
