Chapter 228 Bombarded By Couple Moments

Chapter 228 Bombarded By Couple Moments

Barnaby took Hannah’s hand, settled her onto his lap, and wrapped his arms tightly around her from behind.

His sudden affection caught Hannah off guard. She turned her head and asked, “What’s up?”

“I missed you,” Barnaby murmured, burying his face in the crook of her neck and nuzzling her.

Hannah squirmed, feeling ticklish. She reached up and held his restless head in place. “Did you take care of everything from last night?”

“Yeah, it was the brother of a drug lord I took down before. He hired someone to get revenge, but they’ve already been caught,” Barnaby replied.

He kept quiet about the sniper so she wouldn’t freak out.

He just had his men secretly keeping an eye on her.

“Who were you visiting at the hospital?” Barnaby asked.

“Your eldest niece, Iris. Her baby’s heartbeat isn’t developing quite right, so she asked me to help her with prenatal care,” Hannah replied, her eyes lowered.

“You know how to help with that?” Barnaby asked, surprised.

“Yeah, back when I lived in the mountains, I used to help my grandma with the village’s pigs, cows, and stuff, helping them through pregnancy and even delivering their babies. After seeing it so many times, I just picked it up,” Hannah said.

She made it sound easy, but she hadn’t really put in much effort back then.

Barnaby’s mouth twitched. “Come on, animals and people aren’t the same, right?”

He couldn’t shake the feeling that it wasn’t Iris asking Hannah for help, but Hannah messing with her instead.

“Pretty much. Sometimes it was people, too. Like, I’d help deliver a calf for one family, then pull an all-nighter rushing over to the neighbor’s place to help their daughter-in-law give birth,” Hannah said.

Barnaby didn’t know what to say.

‘Seriously, what kind of life did Hannah have before all this?’ Barnaby wondered.

Ronin was stunned.

‘Man, if Iris ever found out Hannah was comparing her to farm animals, her reaction would be priceless,’ Ronin thought.

“You’ll be heading over to the Thole family residence a lot from now on, right?” Barnaby suddenly asked.

“Uh-huh,” Hannah replied.

“If you want to visit the Thole family residence, just come along with me. No need to come up with some excuse,” Barnaby added.

Hannah shot him a surprised look. ‘Is this guy just way too sharp, or can he read me like a book?’ she wondered.

He instantly saw right through her.

“It’s not the same,” Hannah said.

She was heading over to see Iris just to cause a little chaos.

“Let me look into it for you. Just promise me you won’t put yourself in danger, okay?” Barnaby said.

Thinking about that sniper bullet from last night, he instinctively pulled her even closer. He’d finally found her, and he wasn’ t about to lose her again.

“If I ever need help, I’ll ask for it,” Hannah said softly, gently turning him down.

Barnaby was still part of the Thole family. Digging up trouble in the family would just put a target on his back, so it was better for an outsider like her to handle it.

“Alright,” Barnaby said after a moment’s hesitation. In the end, he respected her choice and didn’t push any further.

He knew the more he tried to talk her out of it, the more stubborn she’d get.

“What do you want for dinner tonight?” he asked, changing the subject.

“Why don’t we cook at home? Bet you haven’t tasted my cooking yet,” Hannah teased.

bored, Hannah nodded without hesitation. “Sounds great!”

By the time they got back to the old compound, it was already late and the clinic had closed for the night.

Hannah unlocked the side door, and Ronin helped Barnaby haul in the food and flowers they’d grabbed on the way back, carrying everything straight into the west wing’s living room.

“Ronin, why don’t you stay and try Barnaby’s cooking?” Hannah called out as he was about to leave.

“No, thanks,” Ronin replied with a smile.

‘Spare me, please. I’ve had my fill of their lovey-dovey antics all the way here. I really can’t take any more, Ronin thought to himself.

“Could you drop these flowers off at the gate of the neighboring complex? Chloe will come down to pick them up,” Hannah said, handing him a bunch of hydrangeas, roses, and sunflowers.

Her grandma loved all kinds of flowers, and when Hannah saw how fresh they looked at the supermarket, she ended up buying a few more than she planned.

“Sure thing,” Ronin replied.

After Ronin left, Hannah snipped the stems off the rest of the flowers and popped them into vases, while Barnaby was in the kitchen, apron tied, marinating steaks.

The whole vibe was just cozy and relaxed.

Just then, there was a knock at the door. The front door was unlocked, so a moment later, Chloe walked right in.

Hannah was setting the vase on the dining table when she turned and spotted Chloe. “Chloe? What brings you over?” she asked.

“Ronin said you guys were back, so I came by to check in, and I wanted to talk about something real quick,” Chloe explained.

Then she stole a glance at Barnaby, who was searing steaks in the kitchen.

His tall, commanding figure, with a gray apron draped over a crisp white shirt, made him look both effortlessly handsome and perfectly domestic.

Just that one look was enough to make Chloe’s heart flutter wildly.

Back in the mountains, all the guys in her village thought cooking and housework were just “women’s work.”

But after coming to the city, she realized that guys could do housework too.

The men who could cook and help out around the house were the ones who truly cared.

She wanted to find a good man like that to stick with for the long haul.

“What’s up?” Hannah asked, pouring her a glass of fresh milk from the fridge.

Chloe quickly looked away. “It’s nothing major. While you guys were out, Mrs. Reese came by the clinic to see your grandma.”

“And then?” Hannah asked.

Chloe took a sip of milk and continued, “They were in the exam room with the door closed, so I don’t know what they talked about. But ever since Mrs. Reese left, your grandma hasn’t seemed very happy these past couple of days.”

Hannah frowned. ‘I’m the one who confronted Daisy, so why would Mrs. Reese come looking for my grandma?’ she wondered.

“Got it,” Hannah said with a nod.

“Oh, and Hannah, I heard from my brother that you guys got caught up in a terrorist attack while you were out. Are you all okay?” Chloe asked, linking arms with Hannah, her voice full of concern.

Hannah smiled. “We’re fine.”

“Honey, the steaks are ready. Clear the table, we can eat now,” Barnaby called out from the open kitchen, glancing back at them.

“Okay!” Hannah replied, quickly clearing the table of the flower trimmings.

Chloe pitched in too, her voice full of envy. “Hannah, Barnaby is so good to you. He’s the kind of man every girl in Zirenth dreams of.”

“Looking to land a boyfriend that perfect too?” Hannah teased, shooting Chloe a playful eyebrow raise.

“Oh, quit it~” Chloe pouted, her cheeks flushing with embarrassment.

She couldn’t help sneaking glances at the open kitchen, watching Barnaby carefully plate the steaks. Just seeing him so focused made her cheeks go pink.

Barnaby felt the obvious stare and looked up, locking eyes with Chloe for a split second.

Startled, Chloe quickly looked away, her face turning even redder.

Barnaby’s brows furrowed a little as he glanced over at Hannah.

Hannah didn’t seem to notice Chloe’s gaze at all. After tidying up the table, she headed over to wash her hands and casually picked up one of the plated steaks.

Barnaby was speechless.

“Wow, that smells amazing! I bet it’s delicious!” Chloe said, practically drooling as she eyed the steak Hannah was carrying

over.

“You know it!” Hannah grinned, seeing Chloe eyeing the steak like she hadn’t eaten in days and was just about to tell her she could have some, when Barnaby chimed in from behind, his tone dry as ever.

“Chloe, haven’t you had dinner yet?” Barnaby asked, glancing at her.

Barnaby brought over a plate of steak, and Chloe, thinking it was for her, was caught off guard. She nodded at first, then quickly shook her head. “I-I already ate.”

As soon as she finished speaking, Chloe instinctively reached out for the plate again, a little flustered and embarrassed.

Barnaby smoothly pulled the plate out of her reach. “Alright, time for you to head out. Don’t hang around and interrupt our dinner.”

Chloe just stood there, totally speechless and not sure what to do with herself.
