Chapter 237 No Men Allowed In Obstetrics
Barnaby saw Hannah hurrying out with her backpack and called out, “Where are you going?”
“I’m heading to the Thole family,” Hannah replied, quickly filling him in on what had happened to Iris.
“I’ll go with you,” Barnaby said, heading into his office to grab his laptop.
Barnaby drove, and the two of them made their way from Brynlock to Thole Manor.
All the way there, Hannah felt a weight pressing down on her.
Iris’s accident, for no apparent reason, meant someone was working behind the scenes, trying to keep her from protecting Iris’s child.
It wasn’t that Hannah cared about Iris, if Iris lost the baby, she’d lose a useful pawn. Two and a half hours later, Barnaby’s car pulled up to the gates of Thole Manor.
Just as they arrived, his phone, mounted on the dashboard for navigation, started ringing.
The caller ID showed an unknown number, but Hannah immediately knew it was Chloe.
To her knowledge, she’d never given Chloe Barnaby’s number.
Barnaby glanced at the screen, not recognizing the number, and answered. Chloe’s voice sounded tense as she spoke through the speaker. “Hello? Is this Barnaby?”
He handed the phone to Hannah. “Baby, can you get that for me? I’m driving.”
Hannah took the phone, put it on speaker, and asked, “What’s up?”
“Barnaby, oh, Hannah, it’s you,” Chloe said, her voice trembling.
“Hedy suddenly started throwing up and having diarrhea. He’s totally out of it. I took her to the vet clinic, but she started freaking out and wouldn’t let anyone touch her.
“The vet said it’s a stress reaction and quite severe. They suggested having its owner here to accompany it during treatment. I thought you were busy and didn’t want to disturb you, so I asked my brother for Barnaby’s number.”
Hannah felt a pang of guilt. She’d been stuck in Brynlock these past few days and hadn’t brought Hedy with her, no wonder Hedy was sulking.
“Got it. Send me the address,” Hannah said.
She hung up and turned to Barnaby. “Barnaby, just let me out here. Can you swing by and check on Hedy for me?”
Too much stress could actually kill her, and that had Hannah seriously worried.
She couldn’t go herself, and Ronin was still in Brynlock, so Barnaby was the only one who could go.
“I’ll go with you to see how Iris is doing,” Barnaby said, hitting the gas and driving straight up to Iris’s place without stopping.
He didn’t care about Iris’s fate, he was only worried that Edmund might give Hannah a hard time.
The place was crawling with servants and nurses, all looking deadly serious.
“Men aren’t allowed in the maternity ward. You’re not going to be any help here, so you might as well go check on Hedy,” Hannah said, unbuckling her seatbelt and grabbing her bag. “That’s your kid, remember? Go on.”
Barnaby just stared at her, lost for words.
‘Whatever, Barnaby thought. With all those people around, she’d be fine. Since the girl didn’t want him inside, he might as well go see about that pig.
The servants in the courtyard recognized Hannah as the Nameless Healer and let her pass without a word.
the living room

The living room, with its antique decor, was even more tense than the courtyard outside.
Mabel, the Thole family matriarch, sat at the head of the room with a stern face. Next to her was Eleanor, dripping with jewelry, while Dr. Madison and Martha Collins stood off to the side.
Five or six female family doctors and obstetricians in white coats were standing guard outside the master bedroom door.
Hannah didn’t see Evelyn or Stanley anywhere.
Her gaze finally landed on Mabel and Eleanor. Their looks had barely changed since back then, though the years had left a few marks at the corners of their eyes.
As Hannah sized them up, Mabel and Eleanor were sizing her up right back.
Twelve years had passed, and the wild little girl from back then had blossomed into a graceful young woman.
According to the latest intel Eleanor had dug up, after Rosalie died in that car accident, Evelyn and Hannah vanished into the wilds near the Zirenth-Velmora border, living under the radar.
It wasn’t until last year that the Scott family from Brynlock accidentally found out Hannah was actually their biological daughter and brought her back from the mountains.
By all logic, eleven years in some remote village should’ve turned Hannah into a tanned and scruffy country girl. But here she was, with delicate features, skin so fair it almost glowed, and an air of cool indifference.
She stood there, neither humble nor arrogant, radiating a kind of aloof detachment, even Xenia Thole, who’d grown up with the best education the Thole family could offer, didn’t have that kind of presence.
Instead of running for her life, it looked like Hannah had gone off to the mountains for some serious self- improvement, and now she was back, totally transformed.
A flicker of jealousy flashed in Eleanor’s eyes.
“What took you so long to get here?” Mabel demanded, her tone icy and commanding.
“Mabel, don’t be too upset. Hannah’s still just a kid, her sense of responsibility and judgment aren’t fully developed yet.
“She probably thought it wasn’t anything life-or-death, so she didn’t hurry,” Eleanor chimed in, her words sounding comforting, but the undertone was anything but.
It sounded like she was defending Hannah, but really, she was just throwing fuel on the fire.
“If this isn’t life-or-death, then what is? Do we have to wait until Iris and her child both die before you realize how serious this is?” Mabel snapped, her voice ringing with the authority of the family matriarch.
The doctors nearby felt their knees nearly buckle, terrified that Mabel’s rage might turn on them and end their careers in an instant.
Hannah snorted, a cold, sarcastic chuckle escaping her lips,
Mabel’s face turned so dark it was almost scary. Eleanor barked, “How can you laugh at a time like this?” “Eleanor, you haven’t changed a bit, always stirring the pot, sowing discord, and just dying for some drama,” Hannah replied, her voice icy and detached.
“You! What crap are you talking about?” Eleanor’s face went from red to white and back again, her expression all over the place.
As the wife of the Thole Group’s CEO, Eleanor was someone everyone in high society gave a wide berth to. Even Mabel, the matriarch and chairman’s wife, had never openly put her on blast like this in front of a crowd.
But now, Hannah had roasted her right in front of everyone.
Eleanor thought back to the old days and was sure that brat had come back just to mess things up for her.
No way was she letting Hannah win this time.
Mabel shot a glance at Eleanor, who was furiously wringing her handkerchief beside her. She had to admit, Hannah was gutsy, she actually respected her for being so straightforward.

After decades as sisters-in-law, Mabel knew Eleanor’s true colors all too well.
But as the Thole family matriarch, she had to keep the peace and play nice, just like the family rules said. Unless Eleanor really messed up, all she could do was put on a friendly face and go along with her.
The only reason Mabel had lost her temper just now was because she was worried sick about her daughter.
Eleanor tried to protest, but Mabel cut her off.
“Enough!” Mabel snapped, turning to Hannah. “Go check on Iris, now! If you can’t save her baby, don’t expect me to go easy on you!”
Eleanor clenched her handkerchief so hard it looked like she might tear it apart, forcing herself to swallow her rage. Her eyes were practically dripping venom as she glared at Hannah.
Hannah’s face went cold again as she followed Martha into the master bedroom.
Inside, Iris was lying pale and weak on the bed, with Stanley keeping watch on the other side. When he saw Hannah walk in, his eyes lit up. “Nameless Healer, you’re finally here.”
Not seeing Evelyn anywhere, Hannah asked, “Where’s my grandma?”
“Ms. Carter’s in the kitchen, brewing up the medicine herself,” Stanley replied.
Hannah nodded, dropped her bag, and took Iris’s hand to check her pulse. Her brows furrowed as she felt for it..
