Chapter 248 Unfair Favoritism
Chapter 248 Unfair Favoritism
‘I never thought Hannah would actually keep a pig as a pet. She used to hate pigs, you know’ Chloe thought.
Barnaby tapped his phone and played a recording, it was Chloe’s voice from the vet clinic yesterday
Chloe’s cheeks turned bright red in an instant. She never imagined Barnaby would actually record her.
Hannah glanced at Barnaby in surprise, wondering if this guy was just super paranoid or if his survival instincts were off the charts.
Barnaby shot her a look that clearly said, “I’m innocent. She’s the one making things up.”
Hannah turned her gaze back to Chloe, her face totally blank.
She’d brought Chloe and her brother along after more than a decade of friendship and knowing them so well, but she never thought Chloe would start crushing on Barnaby.
Still, she got it. Barnaby’s got the looks, the body, and the family connections, even she had to admit she was a sucker for his face. So it wasn’t surprising Chloe liked him too.
But…
“Hannah, I…” Chloe started to say, trying to speak up.
“No need to explain,” Hannah cut her off, her tone icy.
“If you want money, a house, fame, whatever, stick with me and stay loyal, and I’ll make sure you get it all. But if you can’t do that, just walk away.
“But if you’re only here to use my trust and grab things that were never yours, don’t blame me for cutting you off. Anything I give you, I can take back in a heartbeat,” she said.
With her secret thoughts laid bare in front of everyone, Chloe couldn’t even look up, her face burning with embarrassment.
If Hannah hadn’t brought her and her brother out of the mountains, she’d probably still be out there farming, raising chickens and pigs, and making herbal meals for the villagers just to scrape by.
There’s no way she’d be earning in a single month what used to take her years, living in a luxury condo with housekeepers and a chef at her beck and call.
But maybe because life got so good so quickly, she couldn’t help but get greedy for more…
“I’m sorry…” Chloe choked out.
Hannah gave her a frosty look and slid the medicine recipe across the table. “Go brew the medicine.”
Chloe kept her head down, sniffling as she grabbed the recipe and walked out.
“Baby, you’re still way too soft-hearted,” Barnaby said.
If it were up to him, he’d have kicked her out already.
He couldn’t stand two-faced people.
“She’s still useful,” Hannah said as she carefully removed the gold needles from Barnaby’s face.
“Honestly, it’s hard to find a herbal chef as good as her in all of inswood. If we kick her out, she’ll just end up working for another clinic, and then we’ll have one more competitor.
“Might as well give her a chance to turn things around,” she explained.
Barnaby wasn’t keen on giving Chloe another shot, but since Hannah had already made up her mind, he respected it. “If she doesn’t make the most of this chance, I’ll deal with her for you.”
Hannah’s lips curled into a faint smile. “Deal.”
Barnaby watched as Hannah unhurriedly wiped down the gold needles with alcohol, then expertly found the acupuncture points on Hedy and stuck the needles in.
“You!” Barnaby stammered, utterly taken aback.
“What’s wrong?” Hannah said, seeing him staring as she put the needles into Hedy. “Is there a problem?”
‘Hell yeah, there’s a problem!’ Barnaby thought.
“You’re using the same needles on it that you Successfully unlocked! human to you, or do you just not see it as an animal?!” Barnaby blurted out.
Hannah shot back, “I’m treating it like your son.”
Barnaby watched Hedy sprawled out on Hannah’s lap, eyes half losed in bliss as the needles worked their magic. For the umpteenth time, he was itching to throw Hedy on the grill.

Chapter 248 Unfair Favoritism
Joe was in the north wing, keeping an eye on the medicine pot, when he saw Chloe come back with red, puffy eyes, she’d clearly been crying. He hurried over. “Chloe, what’s wrong?”
As soon as Chloe saw her brother, she pouted, and the tears she’d just managed to hold back started streaming down again. “Joe…”
Joe panicked. Chloe was the sister he cherished most, and seeing her cry just melted his heart.
“Come on, tell me, what happened?” he asked, his voice full of concern.
‘Chloe just went to the west wing to see Hannah, why is she crying now?’ Joe wondered.
“It’s nothing, Hannah didn’t bully me,” Chloe said quickly, wiping her tears away, looking all pitiful. “She just gave me a little scolding, that’s all. I know she only did it for my own good, really”
Joe, who’d just been all soft-hearted, suddenly got serious.
“She’s definitely looking out for you. Even if she scolded you, you should really think about whether you did anything wrong. Hannah and Mrs. Carter have been so good to us, we can’t ever forget that, got it?”
Chloe just fell silent.
‘Honestly, sometimes I wonder if I’m even your real sister… Chloe thought, feeling a sting of hurt.

At Thole Manor, in Howard’s private wing.
Howard had just gotten home from work and was in the living room when he asked Dustin, “Have you managed to get in touch with Raven yet?”
“Not yet, but I’ve tracked down Raven’s assistant, Piggy, and I’m rying to get him to set up a meeting,” Dustin replied.
Howard frowned, clearly annoyed. “Why are you so inefficient?”
“Raven’s not easy to get in touch with. It took some time,” Dustin said.
“Don’t give me any excuses!” Howard snapped.
Eleanor jumped in right away. “Why are you getting on his case? Dustin’s been working hard! He spent the whole day just sitting there thinking, didn’t get anything done at all!”
Just thinking about it made Howard feel totally unfair, he was resentful and jealous, all mixed together.
That day, Dustin had only teased Hannah just a bit, and he got suck facing the wall to reflect. But Barnaby?
Barnaby had zero respect for his elders, shot his mouth off, and was totally out of line. And Edmund just turned a blind eye and let him off the hook, never even called him out on it later!
‘That’s just way too much favoritism!’ Howard fumed.
He wasn’t fooled. Edmund always acted all strict with Barnaby in public, but it was just for show, hiding how much he actually spoiled him in private.
Edmund was just like their father, always siding with Barnaby. If anyone else in the Thole family had pulled half the stunts Barnaby had, they’d have been kicked out ages ago!
And Barnaby, an illegitimate son, not only got to stay in the family, but their father even handed over all his shares to him! If things kept going like this, the next head of the Thole family would end up being Barnaby!
“Hurry up and get in touch with him! Before Barnaby gets married, you need to outshine him and win the head of the family’ s approval!” Howard urged.
“Yes, Dad, Dustin replied, getting up and heading out.
“Come on, don’t get so worked up. The next head of the family is definitely going to be from our branch,” Eleanor said, trying to reassure Howard.
Howard took a sip of his coffee, settling his nerves. “How’s the vestigation into Iris going?”
“Relax, they won’t be able to trace anything back to me,” Eleanor eplied.
This kind of ugly family infighting was something Edmund and Mabel would never let go public, they’d do anything to protect the family’s reputation.
So the investigation into Iris’s medicine switch was kept strictly behind closed doors, handled internally, and moving at a snail’s pace.
Howard nodded. “Alright then.”
“Uncle Howard, Aunt Eleanor,” Susie called out as she knocked and stepped inside.

Chapter 248 Unfair Favoritism
She came in with red, tearful eyes, putting on her most pitiful ad “Uncle Howard, Aunt Eleanor, you have to help me!
“Uncle Edmund won’t lift a finger for me, and now he wants to give Hannah her title back as the third daughter of the Thole Family
“I have no parents in the Thole family, no one to lean on, you’re the only ones I can turn to…” she pleaded through tears.
Howard and Eleanor traded glances. Both of them were sly as foxes, of course they knew exactly why Susie was here. She was just desperate to hold onto her spot in the Thole family.
A pawn handed to them for free? No way they’d let that opportunity slip by.
