Chapter 283 Chasing Ms. Carter

Chapter 283 Chasing Ms. Carter

Upon hearing this, Allen Thole stiffened. He turned around and aw Hannah Carter standing behind him, giving him a look that said she’d seen right through him.

A goofy grin spread across his face. He started circling around Hannah, clapping his hands with glee. “Hide and seek is so much fun! I caught you! Now you have to catch me!”

Hannah was speechless.

Hannah glanced around but didn’t spot any surveillance cameras. For a moment, she couldn’t figure out if Allen was genuinely clueless or just playing it safe.

“Allen, there you are! Finally found you. Your aunt’s been looking for you to have dinner.” Maria came running over, out of breath. When she spotted Hannah, her face lit up. “Ms. Carter!”

“I don’t wanna eat, I wanna play hide and seek! It’s so much fun Hannah, come play with me some more,” Allen pouted, tugging at Hannah’s hand.

“Ms. Carter should go back for dinner,” Maria coaxed. “How about after you eat, I play hide and seek with you? Your aunt’s already waiting, and she made your favorite roast pigeon.”

“No, I don’t want to! I just wanna play hide and seek!” Allen flopped down on the floor, kicking and fussing.

“Allen, come on, get up, the floor’s dirty,” Maria said, hurrying over to pull him up.

But Allen just wouldn’t budge. Here was a guy in his twenties, acting like a little kid, throwing a full-blown tantrum, rolling around on the floor, all because he wanted to keep playing hide and seek. Maria was frantically trying to get him up, sweat pouring down her face.

Hannah just stood off to the side, watching him go at it for over ten minutes. Honestly, it was like watching someone lose their mind.

“Is he always like this?” she asked Maria.

“Ever since Allen’s brain got damaged by that fever back then, he’s been stuck at the level of a three-year-old. Whenever something doesn’t go his way, he just throws himself on the floor and has a meltdown,” Maria explained.

Then, as if she suddenly remembered something, she looked at Hannah with hopeful eyes and asked, “Ms. Carter, you’re a legendary healer. Can you cure him? His aunt has already brought in some of the world’s top neurosurgeons, but nothing’s worked.”

Hannah shook her head gently. “Neurology isn’t really my specialty.”

‘Honestly, I still kinda wonder if Allen is actually that out of it, or just playing dumb, Hannah thought to herself. ‘If he’s just faking it, even the best doctor in the world couldn’t help someone who’s pretending on purpose.’

Maria let out a sigh. “Allen really has had a tough life. After his father passed away, his mother fell seriously ill and soon followed him.

“He was left all alone, and that high fever damaged his brain. Now he’s not all there, sometimes he can’t even look after himself. It’s honestly heartbreaking.”

“Luckily, his aunt is so kind and really cares about Iris. After his mother passed, she took him in and raised him like her own son. She treats him so well that sometimes even her own daughter gets jealous,” Maria added.

The aunt and Allen’s father she was talking about were the twin born to the Thole patriarch’s first wife: Vera and Alastair. That was exactly what Iris had mentioned before: “Vera has already suffered enough from losing her twin brother, and yet Lysander’s wife keeps harassing her, always bringing up the past and reopening old wounds, all in the name of seeking justice for her husband.”

Hannah looked at Allen, her expression darkening with concern She crouched down, ready to comfort him.

“Hey, you idiot, how much longer are you gonna make us wait? The food’s getting cold!” A bossy, pampered voice rang out from behind.

It was a woman in her twenties, her narrow, almond-shaped eye making her instantly recognizable.

Maria greeted her, “Xenia.”

That was Xenia Thole, the one Maria had mentioned.

Successfully unlocked! so Xenia ended up with her mother’s

Back then, Vera’s husband took her family narri surname and was registered under the “X” genui

The moment Allen heard Xenia’s voice, his tantrum came to an rupt halt. He scrambled up and hid behind Hannah, clutching her clothes, his eyes wide with fear as he stared at Xenia.

Xenia spotted Hannah, her brows knitting into a straight line. “Move aside, don’t block me. I’m taking this fool back for

Hannah stood up and glanced at Allen behind her. “Looks like he doesn’t want to go with you.”

“I don’t care what he wants. If he doesn’t come back, my morn won’t even touch her food. Even if he refuses to eat, he’s still coming back and sitting there, end of story, Xenia snapped

Xenia didn’t care about looking proper at all. She strode right up grabbed Allen by the back of his collar from behind Hannah, and dragged him off like he was just a sack of potatoes, completely ignoring his protests.

Hannah was speechless.

“Ms. Carter, I’m really sorry for bothering you. We’ll head back now, Maria said, quickly chasing after them.

When Hannah got back to the clinic, Evelyn and the others had already left. She had just stepped out of the taxi when a black Maybach pulled up behind her.

“Honey, where have you been?” Barnaby rolled down the window and asked.

Hannah shot him a look and unlocked the back door with her key. “Looking for your landlord, huh?”

Barnaby grinned. “Come on, landlord, open up a little wider and let me in, will you?”

Hannah let out a little sigh, but still opened the other side of the door for him.

By the time Barnaby had parked his car in the yard and closed the gate, Hannah had already headed straight for the west wing.

He walked in and found Hannah in the kitchen, her long hair casually clipped up at the back, wearing an apron as she cooked.

“Smells amazing. Landlord, you haven’t had dinner yet? Need a hand with anything?” Bamaby said, stepping closer. “Who said you could come in?” Hannah turned around, only to be greeted by a massive bouquet of red roses right in her face. She frowned. “What’s this supposed to be?”

“A little something to win your heart, Ms. Carter,” Barnaby replied with a cheeky grin.

Hannah gave him a look like he was wasting her time and turned back to her noodles. “Bamaby, you really think I’m that gullible? Maybe some other girl would fall for this, but not me.”

“Come on, just stick your hand in the flowers,” Barnaby teased, a playful glint in his eyes.

“What’s so secret in here?” Hannah turned off the stove, wiped her hands, and reached into the bouquet of roses.

She quickly felt something, a box about the size of her palm.

She shot Barnaby a warning glare. “If I pull out a box of sex toys you’re banned for life from my place.”

Barnaby was speechless.

Barnaby washed his hands, took the spatula from her, and started stirring the noodles in the pot. “Go on, open it up and see

what’s inside.”

Hannah pulled out a black box and opened it. Inside was a card engraved with the Scepter House’s signature dragon emblem. On the front of the card was a number and a QR code.

Hannah recognized that kind of number. It was the winner’s card from a Scepter House auction. With that number, the winner could claim their prize.

She scanned the QR code with her phone, and the item info popped up right away. To her surprise, it was a top-grade Dragon’s Amber.

Her heart skipped a beat. There wasn’t a single doctor or alchemist who could resist such a rare medicinal treasure.

“Such an expensive gift? Aren’t you worried it’ll just go to waste on me?” Hannah teased.

Barnaby grinned. “Not at all. I’m only worried you won’t take it.”

Hannah clicked her tongue, opened up Unipay, and was about to transfer the money. Barnaby saw what she was doing, reached over, and tapped in 520, the Zirenth code for ‘I love you

“Here, that’s your price,” he said with a cheeky smile.

Hannah just stared at him, lost for words.
