Chapter 70

With her hair dried, Hannah settled into bed, ready to sleep.

Out in the dimly lit hallway, cautious movements broke the silence.

A door creaked open nearby, revealing a curious head, while another figure emerged from the staircase landing.

The two shadows froze upon noticing each other, then simultaneously raised fingers to their lips in a silent “Shh.”

Arthur and Felicity drew closer, their whispered voices overlapping in the darkness.

“Can’t sleep either?” they breathed in unison, before turning their attention toward Hannah’s bedroom door.

A strip of light glowed faintly beneath it, though no sound came from within.

“She took a taxi home alone,” Felicity murmured.

Hannah had mentioned meeting a friend for dinner, but no one expected her to return this late.

“I saw,” Arthur replied quietly.

He decided against mentioning the black Audi that had trailed her cab at a distance, pausing at the estate’s entrance until Hannah had safely entered the house.

Some observations would only fuel unnecessary worry.

“At least she’s home safe,” Felicity whispered, her shoulders relaxing slightly.

“Was she always out this late?” Arthur’s brow furrowed with concern.

“Not when she lived with us,” Felicity replied. “But since she moved out…” Her voice trailed off as she remembered what Susie had said about those photos of Hannah hanging around with that crowd.

The worry gnawed at her, though she didn’t want to seem overbearing.

Just then, the click of a turning lock cut through the silence. The bedroom door swung open, making them both jump. “Everything alright?” came Hannah’s voice from the doorway.

At the sound of the opening door, a loud thud echoed from the far end of the corridor, as if someone had stumbled in the dark.

It took Arthur and Felicity a moment to adjust to the light spilling from the room.

When their eyes finally focused, they spotted a small figure scrambling up from the floor, clearly in a hurry to slip back into his bedroom unnoticed.

“Lucian?” Arthur flipped the hallway switch, flooding the space with light.

“Why are you still up, sweetie?” Felicity asked gently. “Were you worried about your sister, too?”

Blinded by the sudden brightness, Lucian shielded his eyes.

“Why would I care when she comes home? I was just going to the bathroom,” he retorted, already retreating toward his

room.

In his haste, he left one slipper behind and nearly tripped again on the way.

“But… you have a bathroom in your room,” Felicity murmured, more to herself than anyone. She hurried after him. “Lucian, wait, let me see if you’re okay.”

Arthur sighed softly. “That boy wouldn’t admit he was worried even if you paid him.”

Hannah lingered in her doorway, watching Arthur, who hadn’t moved. “Did you need something else?”

He cleared his throat. “Where did you go tonight? You didn’t get into any trouble, did you?”

Her eyes lifted to his, a flicker of caution in them. She couldn’t quite read his tone.

“Just a party with friends. Why?” she asked.

Arthur noticed her puzzled look and realized she had no idea she’d been followed home.

Arthur chose his next words carefully. “Next time you’re out past ten, give me a call. I’ll come pick you up. It’s not safe for you to take a taxi alone so late.”

The truth was, Hannah was strikingly beautiful, and he felt she needed looking after.

For a moment, Hannah wondered if he’d found something out, but it was just concern for her safety.

When she’d come in earlier, the living room lights were on but empty. Assuming everyone was asleep, she’d tiptoed upstairs. She hadn’t expected them to still be awake, waiting for her return.

A sudden warmth bloomed in her chest, softening the guarded corners of her heart.

This was what home felt like, something she hadn’t known in over ten years.

“Alright.” Hannah gave a quiet nod.

“Get some rest. Goodnight,” Arthur smiled.

“Goodnight,” she replied.

Instead of preparing for bed, Arthur picked up his phone and dialed a contact in the police department. “Travis, were you able to trace that license plate I sent you earlier?”

He was referring to the vehicle that had trailed Hannah home thirty minutes prior.

“It’s registered to Thole Group,” Travis Reid reported. “A company car assigned to the branch manager of their Brynlock subsidiary.”

“Who’s the manager?” Arthur’s voice tightened.

“Barnaby,” came the response.

After exchanging a few more pleasantries, Arthur ended the call. “Okay, thank you.”

He felt a wave of relief. At least it wasn’t some random criminal tailing Hannah.

But the moment Barnaby’s name came up, a headache set in.

Hannah was still underage, and Barnaby’s predatory interest in her was deeply troubling.

What made it worse was the man’s substantial influence, far beyond what the Scott family could reasonably challenge.

If he was going to protect his sister, Arthur knew he had to step up his game and secure more power and money.

After dominating the Cavalor School forum for over two weeks, the scandal about Susic, the fake heiress of the bankrupt Scott family, was finally pushed off the front page by the newly announced school beauty and heartthrob contest.

Unlike previous years, when the contest was entirely student-run, this edition was officially launched by the school.

The winners would represent the student body by giving a speech at Cavalor’s 80th-anniversary ceremony.

The selection process started with an open nomination where students could recommend themselves or others. The ten most-voted boys and girls would advance to the final round, where the school would judge their speeches and select the

winners.

“Zoe, don’t you think our class should back Hannah for school beauty?” a classmate asked, gathered with a few others around Zoe’s desk.

“With looks like hers, she’d easily stand out.”

“Totally. I’ll go get Avery.” Zoe quickly brought over the class president, Avery Parker.

But as soon as she explained the idea, Avery tapped her phone screen in disapproval. “Did any of you actually read the rules?

“The school isn’t just picking a pretty face. They want someone with good grades, too. Pushing Hannah forward would just embarrass her in front of the whole school.”

Though Hannah was undeniably beautiful, everyone knew her grades were nothing to boast about.

And giving a speech in front of the entire school wouldn’t be easy for her.

“Honestly, how many people really have both looks and brains, anyway?”

“Well, there’s Mr. Thole, for one.”

“Or Owen. Jasper’s not bad, either.”

“Yeah, but they’re in a totally different league.”

Just then, Hannah walked in and noticed the small crowd around her seat, all sighing with disappointment.

She looked confused for a moment.

“Hannah! We were just talking about the school beauty contest. It’s too bad you’re not running,” Zoe said, pulling out

Hannah’s chair for her.

“What contest?” Hannah asked.

Realizing she hadn’t heard about it, Zoe quickly explained everything, expecting Hannah to be at least a little disappointed. After all, every girl liked being recognized for her looks.
