But Gordon was an old, stubborn man, dead-set on making them call their guardians to the school.
Not far off, Jolie was already streaming down tears, crying out for her mom nonstop. Zora frowned deeply. Distracted for a moment, she accidentally tapped and dialed Leighton’s number.
The phone buzzed with the dial tone. Zora jolted back to her senses, staring at the outgoing call interface, flustered for a second, and ready to end the call-yet the line was picked up almost right away.
“Zora.”
A crisp, quiet voice came through the phone.
“Zora?”
Receiving no response, Leighton pulled the phone away from his ear and glanced at the
contact.
It was indeed Zora.
Still, there was no reply from the other side; the background sounded noisy, and he could faintly hear his cousin’s loud, chattery voice.
All the senior executives present fell dead silent. They stared wide-eyed at the man speaking in a quiet, measured tone at the head of the room, exchanging stunned looks with one another.
Whose call was this exactly? It instantly pulled them out of the icy, tense atmosphere they’d been trapped in.
Right before the call came, they’d been getting chewed out by Leighton. Every proposal they put forward failed to satisfy him, and they’d been torn apart by his harsh criticism.
The second the call rang in, the cold, intimidating edge on Leighton’s face softened completely. He even cleared his throat, his tone turning gentle in a way none of them had ever heard before.
The executives below stole quiet glances at Tristan, the assistant standing beside Leighton.
They were dying to know who was on the line, secretly hoping to curry favor with this mysterious person-someone who could bail them out whenever they faced Leighton’s anger later on.
Zora had no idea Leighton was in the middle of a meeting. She glanced over at the tearful girl opposite her, bit her lower lip, and spoke softly into the phone.

“Could you come to my school?”
“Alright, I’ll be there soon.”
Leighton froze for a split second, yet his body moved faster than his words. He stood up, grabbed his coat, and strode straight out of the room.
The people left in the office stared at each other in utter bewilderment.
The meeting is over? No more scolding?
Watching him leave, the executives let out collective sighs of relief and sank back into their chairs.
“We have to ask Tristan who that caller was later. That call saved us at the perfect time-my heart was racing nonstop from his lecture just now,” one man murmured with a sigh.
“I bet she’s Mr. Pierce’s special someone. Her voice sounded soft, definitely a girl. That has to be his crush.”
“If it really is, we’re all saved. I’ve read stories before—once a CEO has someone he likes, he’s always in a good mood. Everyone at the company will get to relax too.”
“How’d you figure that out?”
“My daughter told me.”
Loud bursts of laughter broke out across the office.
After hanging up, Zora and the others headed back to the dean’s office.
“Zora, my mom will be here any minute. I asked her to bring us some snacks. My family chef makes the best desserts.”
There was no way for them to leave anytime soon. Hallie sat down beside Zora in the office, and Clark poured each of them a cup of water.
Hallie sat with one leg crossed over the other, chatting casually with Zora.
“Zora, is Kian coming, or is it Jensen?” she asked curiously, eyes sparkling with anticipation.
She hadn’t calmed down one bit after the fight, not the slightest bit worried about getting scolded. Instead, she looked amused, watching Jolie and Tessa wear gloomy, displeased expressions across the room.

“I asked someone else to come. They’re both busy right now,” Zora answered honestly.
Jolie glanced over at her, a cold smirk tugging at the corner of her mouth.

She was dying to see who Zora could possibly call. It would probably just be the house staff like Mae or John. Someone as lowly as Zora could only rely on people like them anyway.
None of Zora’s elder brothers got along with her, so they’d never bother showing up. Her father would never meddle in her troubles, and Jolie had already called their mother over herself. Zora had absolutely no one else to turn to.
She’d already asked around-all the Marlow brothers were tied up with their own business. If Zora called her grandmother or grandfather instead, they’d surely grow disappointed once they found out she’d gotten into trouble at school.
Even though she’d started the whole fight first, Zora had thrown the first punch. Her grandparents hated troublemakers the most, and they’d definitely form a bad impression of Zora once they knew the truth.
Once their opinion soured, it was only a matter of time before Zora got chased out of the Marlow family.
She’d wait patiently. She wanted to watch with her own eyes as Zora was sent back to where she belonged-this family, this life, was never meant for her.
Jolie also knew Wendy had chosen her over Zora, and her smirk widened. Zora had only just come back to the family; she could never rival her place in the Knox household.
So what even if Wendy knew she’d framed her own daughter? In the end, she’d still picked Jolie.
“Hallie! Getting into another fight at school? Your dad and I signed you up for taekwondo classes, not so you could pick fights with your classmates!”
The sharp click of high heels echoed down the quiet hallway, followed by a tone full of disappointment and frustration. Moments later, an elegant woman in a dress appeared at the office doorway.
