Wendy still burned with anger, thinking about everything that had just happened. The more she ranted about Zora, the more furious she grew.

“Mom, how does Zora even know Leighton?” Jolie asked.

“Who can say? Jensen is friends with Leighton. She probably tagged along and met him through Jensen,” Wendy frowned and replied.

“Leighton is just as bad. I can’t believe your cousin would even associate with someone so utterly ill-bred. Figures. He’s never had a mother to keep him in line,” Wendy grumbled on.

At the mention of Jensen, Jolie ground her teeth in quiet rage. He’d never introduced her to their circle, but he’d welcomed that wretched Zora instead.

“Mom, watch your words.” Jolie glanced over her shoulder to make sure no one was nearby, then frowned at Wendy.

“Right, right…” Realizing she’d spoken out of turn, Wendy quickly fell silent, still shaken by her own careless remark.

Leighton’s mother was a forbidden topic in their social circle; anyone who brought her up always regretted it.

“Mom, Leighton isn’t like that at all. He only acted this way today because of Zora. I never thought she’d run straight to him instead of coming to you and Dad. He’s usually really easygoing. Someone must have filled his head with lies and turned him against our family,” Jolie masked the cold glint in her eyes and spoke softly.

“Who else would it be? Zora, of course! She’s always running to tattle. I can’t believe I have a daughter like her.” Wendy seethed at the mere mention of Zora.

Jolie listened quietly, her gaze turning icy.

Zora was like a ghost that just wouldn’t leave them alone.

Zora and the others had no idea what Wendy and Jolie were saying behind their backs-and even if they did, they wouldn’t have cared. The rift between them was already set in stone.

“Have you eaten yet? Let me take you all out for a meal,” Leighton said, his eyes fixed solely on Zora as he spoke.

“We’re good. We promised to treat our classmates to lunch. They stood up for us today too.” Hallie waved him off.

“Yeah, we’re fine.” Zora shook her head as well.

“Alright then. Enjoy your meal with your friends. Call me if anything comes up.” Leighton didn’t push, pulling out his phone instead.

A moment later, Hallie’s phone vibrated. She pulled it out, and her eyes went wide the second she saw the screen.

“Oh my gosh! Thank you so much, Leighton! Come on, Zora, we’re getting the fanciest lunch ever today!”

Her heart was light and giddy after seeing the large sum land in her account.

“You spoil her way too much.” Elara had seen the transfer too, shooting Leighton an exasperated look.

“The girls had a rough time today. They deserve something nice to cheer them up.” Leighton slipped his phone back into his pocket, then gently ruffled Zora’s hair. “Order whatever you

want.”

“Thank you all for today.” Zora looked at them, her eyes clear and calm.

“Sweetie, no need to thank us. We’re all family already. If you’d like, why don’t you let me be your godmother? From now on, I’ll be like your real mom. Come visit me and Hallie anytime you want. And here—this is a gift for my new goddaughter.”

Elara smiled warmly, taking Zora’s hand without giving her a chance to refuse. She slipped the diamond bracelet off her own wrist and fastened it around Zora’s, her eyes crinkling with

kindness.

“Yay, Zora! That makes you my little sister now!” Hallie cheered happily.

Leighton could only stare speechlessly at the sudden shift in roles.

Zora was caught off guard by Elara’s warm gesture. The woman seemed sincere and spoke so gently, and Zora found herself growing fond of her right away.

She looked up at Leighton, unsure what to say.

When faced with unfamiliar kindness, she naturally turned to the person she could rely on.

Leighton stepping up for her today had carved out a special place in Zora’s heart.

It wasn’t just because he was Jensen’s friend-she truly liked him for who he was.

“Follow your heart. If you want to accept, you can. If not, that’s fine too. I’ll always look out for you either way,” Leighton felt a quiet, happy flutter in his chest at her quiet reliance on him.

Annoyed at her nephew’s unhelpful attitude, Elara shot Leighton a playful glare, then blinked pleadingly at Zora. She even tugged lightly at the hem of Zora’s top, acting soft and coaxing.

Zora hesitated to agree right away. She glanced toward Hallie, worried she’d feel unhappy sharing her own mother. After everything with Jolie, Zora was wary of causing hard feelings.

“Zora, don’t you wanna be my little sister?” Hallie looked at her with a hurt, pouty expression.

She couldn’t bear the thought of not having a sister to care for.

“I’d be sharing your mom with you… Would you be upset?” Zora murmured softly, staring at her shoes.

“Zora, I’m nothing like Jolie! I’m an only child, so having you around would be the best thing ever. I’ve always wished I had a little brother or sister growing up.

“My parents are the kindest people ever. I know you’ll love them right away.”
