Finished

Maya twisted open the ointment tube and raised it to the mirror, ready to dab the cream onto her neck. Her delicate brows tightened with the sharp sting of pain.

Zora’s eyes widened in shock.

“Hey… Maya…”

She could no longer stay back and stepped into the restroom.

“Z-Zora…”

Maya panicked at her sudden appearance. She quickly swept her long hair forward to cover the marks on her neck.

“I already saw them. There’s no need to hide.”

Zora’s voice was soft, laced with clear sympathy.

Meeting Zora’s earnest gaze, Maya let out a quiet sigh.

“You noticed something was off about me a long time ago, didn’t you?”

Zora didn’t deny it, instead opening her own ointment and gently smoothing it over Maya’s bruised neck.

“I could tell your voice sounded strange when you sent me voice notes to explain homework yesterday. And I caught the smell of medicine on you the second you walked into school this morning.”

Maya froze at her words.

She hadn’t realized Zora had noticed so early.

“Who did this to you?”

Zora looked up at her, calm eyes darkening with anger.

Whoever hurt Maya had gone way too far.

The finger-shaped bruises on her neck looked brutal, as if someone had tried to strangle her.

“Are you going to get revenge for me, Zora?”

A faint glimmer of amusement flickered in Maya’s eyes behind her black-rimmed glasses.

“Tell me who it is, and I’ll make them pay.”

Zora nodded firmly.

Maya had always been kind to her, and no one had the right to hurt her. She wanted to stand up for her.

“It was my mom.”

Zora fell completely silent, stunned by the answer.

“My mom has unstable mental health and lives in a psychiatric facility. She lashes out and hits me whenever she loses her temper. It’s fine, they fade soon enough.”

Maya gave a weak, dismissive smile.

“… Is your mom sick?”

Zora had never imagined the truth would be this heartbreaking.

“Yeah, she’s mentally unstable.”

Maya paused, meeting Zora’s clear, innocent eyes with a bitter smile.

Just speaking of her mother drained the quiet calm from her usual expression, leaving only exhaustion in her gaze.

“Don’t force a smile if you don’t mean it,” Zora said it plainly and sincerely.

It didn’t look right on her face anyway.

“Zora…”

Maya’s voice came out hoarse. Suddenly worn down completely, she leaned over and rested her head lightly on Zora’s shoulder.

She was so tired.

“I’m here,” Zora murmured softly.

“Can I tell you a story?”

Maya wrapped both arms loosely around Zora’s waist. The faint herbal scent clinging to Zora felt strangely comforting, and she leaned into her like someone clinging to a safe haven.

“Go ahead.”

“Nineteen years ago, a man and a woman fell in love and soon found out they were expecting a baby. But right as the woman was close to her due date, the man vanished without a trace. The shock sent her into early labor, and she gave birth to a baby girl the next day. After the girl was born, the woman’s mind slowly began to break.

“She took her daughter back to their home, refusing to believe the man was gone or that he’d abandoned them. Holding onto that hope, she forced herself to take her medication, held her baby close, and whispered over and over that her father would come back someday.

“The first five years were bearable for the little girl. But as years passed and the man never returned, the woman’s spirit broke entirely. She stopped taking her medicine, claiming she could see him only when her mind was unwell.

“No matter how much her daughter cried, begged, or knelt before her, the woman refused

treatment.

“Slowly her condition grew worse and worse. Eventually, she grew to resent her own child, lashing out with shouts and blows at every turn. The girl was covered in endless scars, big and

small.

“She lived like that for five years. When she turned ten, her mother’s mental state spiraled further out of control. One day, she grabbed a knife and nearly killed her own daughter.

“The terrified neighbors called the police afterward, and the woman was placed in a psychiatric institution.

“The little girl begged them not to take her mom away, but no one listened. She could only watch helplessly as she was taken away.

“At first, she was only allowed one visit every six months; her mother was far too unstable and prone to sudden violence.

“It wasn’t until high school that she was permitted to visit once a month. But every time she goes, her mother looks at her with nothing but hatred, screaming and hitting her without

mercy.

“Sometimes it feels like she truly wants to end her life.”

Maya spoke in a flat, quiet tone, her words simple and unadorned. It sounded less like a story and more like she was laying bare her own life.

Zora listened quietly, never interrupting.

“I’m so worn out, Zora.”

She didn’t need many words, and Maya knew Zora understood every unspoken thought. She mumbled the sentence softly, nuzzling lightly against Zora’s neck, craving just a little bit of comfort.

“Rest against me as long as you

need.”

Zora smoothed Maya’s long hair back again, patting her back gently in a soothing rhythm.
