Young people nowadays might live pretty freely, but that punk couldn’t go around being a
bastard.
“Sir, Leighton is far from being immature. There must be some kind of misunderstanding here,” Walter said softly.
Garrett and Walter slipped on disposable slippers and stepped further into the apartment.
Ever since his wife passed away, no one had been able to calm Garrett’s fiery temper. Every time he met his son Leighton, the two would end up arguing nonstop.
There were times when Garrett got so furious that he almost raised his hand, yet he never could bring himself to lay a finger on his own son, leaving himself frustrated and upset every single time.
Now that he had met this sweet girl, his tone had softened completely.
Walter still felt quite unused to seeing this gentle side of Garrett.
He bet even Garrett’s eldest son and daughter had never heard him speak like this.
If they were here right now, they would definitely cross their arms, shudder a little, and even call for a doctor out of shock.
“Misunderstanding? How big of a misunderstanding could there possibly be? You know exactly what kind of person he is. He would never let just anyone stay in his place if they didn’t mean something to him. Look at all these renovations. This place is no longer plain dark and dull like it used to be. It’s obvious he changed everything just for this girl.”
Garrett let out a cold huff as he walked along, fully convinced he had figured out the whole truth while glancing around the newly decorated space.
When Leighton was just a little kid, his mother had once furnished his room with warm-toned decor. That was the only time he had ever lived in such a cozy space. Ever since he grew aware of his surroundings, all his rooms were either pure black or plain white, always giving off a gloomy, dull vibe.
Seeing this warm, lively atmosphere now actually felt really pleasant.
Walter fell silent, knowing perfectly well that Garrett was totally right.
Given Leighton’s cold personality, he would never allow others to intrude into his private space, let alone make such huge changes to his home, unless he truly cared deeply about
someone.
The two men soon reached the living room and settled down on the soft sofas.

“Have some water.”
Zora handed them two cups of water.
“Thank you.” Both men took the cups while keeping their eyes fixed gently on Zora.
“I’ll go wash some fresh fruits for you two.” Zora felt rather flustered under their constant gaze and grew a little nervous.
Their stares held no malice at all, yet being watched so closely still made her feel uneasy. Especially when this elderly man, who looked so much like Leighton, kept staring at her with such odd looks in his eyes.
“There’s really no need to go through all that trouble, dear. We’re just stopping by for a short chat; we won’t stay long,” Garrett’spoke slowly, his sharp eyes filled with obvious curiosity.
It was clear he was forcing himself to soften his usual stern tone, sounding rather awkward and unnatural.
“It’s no trouble at all.” Zora shook her head quickly and hurried straight toward the kitchen.
Thinking about the elderly man sitting outside, she couldn’t help but tremble slightly.
It was not fear, just pure awkwardness.
He had such a stern, tough-looking face, yet his eyes when looking at her were incredibly kind and warm. He kept lowering his usual loud booming voice on purpose, though he was clearly not used to speaking softly, making his tone fluctuate up and down awkwardly.
The mix of different vibes around him felt rather strange.
No matter how hard Garrett tried to hide his powerful aura, Zora could still sense the ruthless aura he had gained from going through countless harsh struggles in his younger days.
This old man had definitely gone through endless hardships and dangerous battles in his lifetime.
“Sir, let’s just talk normally. Not only can the young lady not stand this weird tone, I can barely hold it in either,” Walter whispered.
Meanwhile, in the kitchen, Zora picked out fresh grapes, cherry tomatoes, and strawberries to rinse clean.
While draining the excess water, she pulled out her phone and opened WhatsApp. Leighton’s chat box was right at the top since they had messaged each other not long ago.
“Leighton, when will you be home? Two elderly gentlemen are here visiting.”

She typed out the message carefully.
It had already been half an hour since their last conversation, and she had no idea when he would finish work and head back.
Once all the fruits were neatly arranged on a plate, Zora carried it back to the living room.
“Honey, don’t keep busy anymore. Come sit down and chat with us for a while.” Garrett waved warmly to invite her over.
Zora felt a little helpless inwardly, for she was actually not in the mood for small talk at all.
She was quite shy around strangers and never knew how to properly interact with elder folks.
She quietly sat down on a small sofa beside them and set her phone aside, failing to notice the newly popped-up message notification on the screen.
“Little girl, what exactly is your relationship with that punk?” Garrett asked gently, trying his best to sound warm and approachable.
“Punk?” Zora tilted her head in pure confusion, wondering if he was talking about Leighton.
“Leighton, that brat,” Garrett waved his hand casually, speaking in a rather disapproving tone.
“Leighton is a good friend of my cousin Jensen. I’ve run into some family troubles lately, so I’m temporarily staying here at his place,” Zora explained honestly.
The way he referred to Leighton was fascinating to Zora. Punk? Brat?
“Jensen? Now I get it. You must be Floyd’s granddaughter, right? Your last name is Knox, isn’t it?”
