“Mr. Pierce.” Zora hesitated to address him by his given name out of respect. Having just met him, she was unsure of his relation to Leighton, which was why she had chosen to call him sir earlier.

All awkwardness faded away at once, and Garrett responded readily, “That works perfectly fine.”

“What brings you two here?” Leighton lifted his eyes casually, his tone lazy and unhurried.

“What brings us here?! You’ve been back in the country for over a month now. Do I really have to come personally and drag you home?”

Garrett almost blurted out rough words, yet he held himself back the moment he caught sight of Zora’s gentle, pretty face. He stared straight at Leighton with obvious anger in his eyes.

He had not set foot back home even once since returning from abroad. It was truly frustrating that he had to come fetch him himself.

“Zora, head back to your room to finish your schoolwork first. I’ll make you something to eat later.”

Displeased by his father’s odd attitude, Leighton ruffled Zora’s hair and handed her the potato chips.

“Got it.” Zora knew they were about to talk about private matters that she was not supposed to hear.

“Feel free to drop by my place whenever you’re free, Zora,” Garrett softened his tone the second he spoke to Zora again.

“Sure thing.”

Zora took the snacks and quietly went back to her room, closing the door tightly behind her.

The door was well soundproof, blocking out all noise from outside completely.

“If I didn’t come, were you planning on never going back?”

The peaceful atmosphere broke instantly once Zora left. Garrett fixed his sharp, authoritative gaze firmly on Leighton.

“Don’t you find me an eyesore? I’m a good kid; I won’t go back and annoy you.”

Leighton had been sitting on the arm of the sofa earlier, and now he settled fully onto the cushion. He lowered his eyes and loosened his tie slightly, leaning his slender neck lazily against the sofa back.

“You’re a fucking good kid my ass! I could knock some sense into you right now! You are an eyesore! But her anniversary is coming up. Are you still going to be stubborn and refuse to go back?”

Furious at Leighton’s laid-back, indifferent look, Garrett slammed his palm hard against the marble coffee table. The impact shook all the small items placed on its surface.

The whole room turned deathly silent, thick tension filling every corner.

Leighton paused mid-movement while twirling a glass, his lips pressing into a firm straight line.

The harsh words from Garrett left him frozen in place, his expression turning solemn.

“Calm down sir. The doctor warned you not to get overly agitated. Walter tried to soothe his temper.

Garrett had gone through countless tough battles and lived through countless dangers in his younger days, owning an extremely fiery temper. He had learned to restrain his temper after getting married, afraid of frightening his gentle wife.

Everything changed completely after that terrible incident, and the father-son bond fell apart. Leighton was no longer the child who begged his father to let him ride on his back.

Garrett had stepped down from his high-ranking position and retired years ago, which mellowed his temper a little. Still, just being around Leighton was always enough to easily stir up his anger.

“This coffee table cost 30million dollars. You’ll have to pay for it if you break it.”

Leighton relaxed his tight lips slowly, his downcast eyes hiding complicated emotions. Bright indoor light fell across his strikingly handsome face, yet not a trace of fear could be seen on his features.

“I’m not paying you a damn cent! Didn’t you turn down the money I had Walter transfer to you?”

Garrett was left lost for words, glaring sharply at him. Even so, the intense tension in his heart eased off almost imperceptibly.

His fingers pressed firmly against the tabletop trembled faintly.

“I never take money I don’t earn fairly. If you damage my belongings, you owe me compensation.”

Leighton leaned forward calmly, picked up the unfinished milk that Zora had left behind, and took a sip.

It was sweet and strawberry-flavored.

The bitterness in his throat was slowly washed away by the sweetness.

Before Garrett could speak up, Leighton added casually, “Though it’s still intact for now, so I’ll let it slide.”

Garrett’s rising anger was abruptly stuck halfway, leaving him with nowhere to vent his frustration.

He stared hard at Leighton, sensing great changes in his son’s personality these days.

Walter watched as the flush of anger faded gradually from Garrett’s face and let out a quiet sigh of relief. Only Leighton knew exactly how to calm the old man down.

“Don’t try to change the subject on me!” Garrett raised his graying brows high.

“Aren’t you the one dodging the main topic?” Leighton finished the rest of the milk in one gulp and twisted the empty glass casually between his well-defined fingers.

“Just state whatever you came here to say. There’s a little girl with an empty stomach waiting.”

“Can’t I even stay for a simple meal? You’re cooking for Zora, yet I’ve never once gotten to taste anything you’ve made in my entire life.”

Garrett’s anger faded away completely, seeing his son’s casual manner. He eyed the empty glass with obvious confusion, never having imagined that his proud son would drink leftover drinks from others.
