Chapter 189 Unexpected Home Cooking

If his hearing hadn’t faded with age, he’d clearly heard those words-this kid actually planned to cook meals.
Growing up, this brat had never even touched a kitchen knife once. How on earth did he learn to cook all of a sudden?
“Finish your meals and then head out.”
Leighton let out a soft sigh.
He glanced at the elderly man sitting across from him. It had only been a while since they last met, yet far more strands of his hair had turned snow-white.
Garrett had always embraced the natural course of life and aging. He never bothered with superficial tricks, nor did he use hair dye to cover his gray hair. Deep wrinkles carved by the relentless passage of time spread across his face, and both his hair and eyebrows were fully flecked with white.
“I’ll stay and see how well you do. I’m your father after all-do you really think you can chase me out of this house?”
Garrett’s anger had long faded away, replaced by a curious sense of anticipation. He was eager to find out what decent dishes his son could whip up.
As his father, he had never known Leighton could cook. If Zora ended up getting sick from his clumsy cooking, he would never be able to explain himself to Floyd. He had to witness everything with his own eyes today to feel at ease.
“Suit yourselves then.” Leighton rose to his feet and headed straight for the kitchen.
Zora was still at home with an empty stomach, and he couldn’t keep lingering here chatting endlessly. She was still in her prime growing years and could never go hungry.
Originally, Leighton had intended to send someone to deliver meals to Zora. Later on, she messaged him and didn’t reply for a long time. Worried that she might have run into trouble, he decided not to stay longer at the company. He called off the food delivery and texted Zora personally, telling her he would head home early and make dinner for her himself.
“He truly has grown up, sir.”
Watching Leighton’s figure vanish into the kitchen and the door click shut, Walter patted Garrett gently on the shoulder.
In the past, any topic related to Leighton’s late mother would spark fierce quarrels between father and son, yet now Leighton no longer argued with him at all.

Garrett was getting on in years and could no longer afford to fly into violent rages easily.

Chet had mentioned that Garrett carried countless old hidden injuries from his younger days. Most of those wounds could never be fully cured, and all he could do was rest well and take good care of himself.
“Yeah… he’s all grown up now… If his mom were still here, she would be overjoyed to see this.”
Garrett leaned tiredly back against the sofa, looking instantly decades older. His gaze stayed fixed on Leighton, who moved steadily and busily behind the glass kitchen door.
“I never imagined he could even cook a proper meal…” Garrett murmured with a hint of melancholy.
From childhood to adulthood, Leighton had always been extremely picky about food, clothing, and daily necessities. He was such a hard-to-please fellow. Whenever things didn’t go his way, he would stare at others with watery eyes, looking utterly wronged, which had worried his mom countless times back then.
Not to mention stepping foot in the kitchen, he did not even know what a kitchen looked like when he was little.
Learning that his son could now cook decent meals left Garrett with a complicated mix of emotions he could hardly put into words.
Leighton didn’t cook anything fancy. He prepared a neat home-style dinner with an appetizer, two main dishes, side dishes, and soup: fresh garden salad, honey BBQ ribs, pan-seared beef fillet, roasted vegetables, mashed potatoes, and warm tomato bisque.
“Dinner’s ready,” Leighton called out to them, then went to Zora’s bedroom to fetch her as well.
Everyone took their seats around the round dining table. The round table instantly closed the distance between them, unlike the long formal dining table that always created an awkward sense of estrangement.
Garrett sat at the main seat, with Walter on his left side and Leighton on his right. Zora quietly took a seat right beside Leighton.
“Mr. Leighton Pierce, when did you learn how to cook?” Walter had stayed by Garrett’s side for decades, having retired from the battlefield together. He was no different from a real family member of the Pierce household.
He spoke to Leighton in a warm and gentle tone.
The moment the food touched their tongues, Walter and Garrett exchanged a glance, both unable to hide their genuine shock.
The flavor was surprisingly amazing.

“I picked it up overseas. With no one to cook for me, I had no choice but to learn on my own.”
Leighton spoke casually as if it was nothing remarkable.
His words instantly silenced the two elders.
Back when Leighton graduated from university, he planned to start his own business independently. Garrett had already paved a smooth and successful path for him, yet Leighton refused to follow his arrangement. The father and son had a terrible falling-out that night, and Leighton left the country without hesitation.
Flying into a fit of rage, Garrett cut off all his financial resources strictly, ordering no one in the family to offer him any money, or they would be going against the entire Pierce family.
His elder siblings once secretly transferred money to Leighton, earning them house arrest from Garrett.
Garrett had hoped this tough measure would force Leighton to surrender and come home, yet the young man was far too stubborn to give in an inch.
Two years living abroad had completely changed the once noble, overly fastidious young master. He could now roll up his sleeves and cook hearty meals, and his cooking skills were truly impressive.
Garrett hung his head low. Even though every dish was perfect in color, aroma, and taste, they somehow tasted bitter to him.
A heavy silence fell over the whole room.

Zora sensed the awkward atmosphere but kept quiet without saying anything unnecessary.
“Tell Zora we’re heading off for us. Invite her over to our place to hang out sometime. Don’t forget to send over those spicy strip snacks she loves, bring plenty of her favorite treats too.”
It had been years since father and son shared such a peaceful meal. Both were weighed down by heavy thoughts and barely ate anything.
Zora and Walter ate far more heartily instead.
Seeing this scene, both Walter and Garrett nodded approvingly. They were always fond of girls with good appetites who enjoyed their meals wholeheartedly.
So many young girls nowadays were obsessed with losing weight, barely took a few bites even when tons of delicious food were laid out, wasting countless fine dishes. As people who had lived through tough times, they found such behavior truly distressing to watch.
