She could only roughly tell that he must have gone through something utterly unbearable. Those bitter memories haunted him every time he closed his eyes, which was exactly why he struggled so badly to fall asleep.
Zora knew she had to find another way to help him get proper rest.
Those herbal sachets barely worked for him, and his insomnia was far too severe to be eased by such mild methods.
It was not just ordinary sleeplessness. Deep trauma had left him constantly on guard, making it incredibly tough to find soothing ways that he would willingly accept.
“I promise. I’ll come find you right away if I can’t sleep.” Leighton nodded earnestly.
“Do you like how your room turned out? If anything feels off, I’ll have people rearrange everything at once.”
He had sent workers over to renovate the place early that morning right after dropping Zora off at school. He had not even gotten a chance to check the new layout himself, with Garrett and Walter visiting earlier.
“I love it, everything is perfect. Thank you,” Zora replied softly.
“No need to be so polite with me. Finish your schoolwork and rest early too. Come to my room anytime you need me, I’m just right across the hall.”
Warm tenderness lingered in his eyes.
“Got it. The nourishing soup will be ready in half an hour. Drink it and head to bed early, don’t stay up too late,” Zora reminded him gently.
The monthly school exam was drawing near, leaving Zora buried under heavy coursework. Studying had never been her strongest suit, and countless tricky lessons kept wearing her out.
On top of all the school pressure, endless things had happened lately, leaving her worn out as well.
“I will,” Leighton agreed obediently.
“Come find me straight away if you can’t fall asleep.”
Zora was about to step into her bedroom when she paused and glanced back at him. She could not help feeling worried about his condition.
“I will. You get some good rest too, good night.”

Leighton stood there, meeting her uneasy gaze. The corner of his mouth lifted slightly, and the usual lazy amusement in his eyes softened.
“Good night.”
Once Zora shut her bedroom door, all warmth faded from his face, and he headed straight for his study.
He had been swamped with work lately. Since Zora was staying here now, he had Tristan send all sorts of documents and contracts over so he could handle work from home.
He figured he would have to stick to this routine for most of his time until Zora finished her SAT exams.
He could never feel at ease leaving her home alone.
Leighton opened his laptop and told his assistant to arrange an online meeting.
“Thanks, everyone, for staying late today. Everyone gets double overtime pay.”
Right after wrapping up the video conference, he spoke in a calm tone.
All the exhausted staff instantly perked up the second they heard the extra pay offer.
“Thank you, boss!”
“Have a good rest, boss!”
One by one, everyone signed off from the call.
Leighton stared at the clock; it was already midnight, and a sudden thought hit him that he had forgotten something important.
“Boss? I thought you were sticking to an early bedtime lately. Are your insomnia issues flaring up again? Should I get in touch with the doctor? Are you feeling alright?”
Tristan stayed on the line, gazing at his strikingly handsome boss under the cool white ceiling lights. He always thought Leighton was the very reason every female employee stayed motivated at work.
It had been ages since Leighton pulled such a late night. Tristan could not help but grow anxious about his old sleeping troubles coming back.
Tristan first met Leighton back when they shared an apartment overseas, so they were close friends more than just boss and employee. Later, Leighton had poached him, and only then did Tristan learn just how prominent Leighton’s family was, born into immense wealth and privilege.

The mention of going to bed early finally jogged Leighton’s memory.
“End the call now. You get triple pay.”

He quickly logged off and rushed out of the study, disappearing from the screen in an instant.
A faint herbal scent drifted through the living room. He walked over to the kitchen and poured out the simmered soup.
It had turned cold after sitting for too long, and the clay cooking pot had no heat preservation function at all.
Even though he never truly enjoyed drinking it, he could not bring himself to waste all the care Zora had put into making it.
He leaned casually against the kitchen counter, cool-toned living room lights falling over his plain white shirt. His head hung slightly low, wrapped in undeniable loneliness and desolation.
His slender fingers held the porcelain bowl steady. He pressed the rim to his pale lips and sipped the cold soup slowly, swallowing every mouthful bit by bit.
It tasted nowhere near as nice as warm, fresh soup.
In the past, the overly picky Leighton would have never touched cold food of any kind. Yet now, he drank every last drop without hesitation.
The spacious living room offered a wide view overlooking most of Seacrest through floor-to- ceiling windows. Every corner of the mansion was brightly lit, except for one quiet bedroom.
Leighton glanced toward Zora’s room; the lights were already out, meaning she had finally fallen asleep.
He pictured her cute little face speaking to him in such a serious tone, insisting firmly that he finish every sip of the nourishing soup. She acted just like a strict doctor.
Throughout his whole life, she was the only person who could easily make him do things he never wanted to do.
