Chapter 211 The Sleeping Gas

A faint trace of sedative drifted through the air.

Zora picked up the scent the instant she breathed it in.

Outside the lounge, Lily glanced inside warily. After confirming Zora had rolled over and seemingly fallen asleep with no unusual movements, she went back to sorting through documents, her hands trembling slightly all the while.

Several folders slipped from her grasp and clattered onto the floor. Panic flaring up, she quickly knelt down to gather them back up.

For red

Only once she felt the outsider’s gaze move away did Zora open her eyes, her heart pounding fast.

She reached for the phone she had tucked beside her pillow, unlocked it with her fingerprint with great difficulty, and pulled up Tristan’s contact.

Tristan was quite taken aback when he received Zora’s call. He glanced over at Leighton, who sat presiding over the meeting with a frigid expression, then quietly stepped out of the conference room with his phone in hand.

“Miss Zora?” he spoke softly once he found a quiet corner.

“Tristan… Leighton’s office… someone’s digging through his files…. there’s sleeping gas in the air. Send a doctor over quickly and bring me an antidote.”

Zora’s voice was weak and breathless, breaking between every few words.

Heavy drowsiness clouded her mind, forcing her toward unconsciousness. She had barely any strength left to fight off the sedative’s effects.

The moment she finished speaking, she could hold on no longer and drifted straight off to sleep.

Fury welled up inside her. If she hadn’t been feeling so drained and unwell right now, she would have made that woman outside taste the bitter effects of her homemade poison powder herself.

Did she have any idea how severely low-grade sedatives damaged one’s brain?

Tristan’s heart skipped a beat in alarm at her words. He was far less worried about stolen documents than about Zora getting hurt-if anything happened to her, his boss would surely give him a harsh reckoning.

As if sensing something amiss, Leighton suddenly looked out of the conference room.

Beneath that overwhelmingly intimidating gaze, Tristan nearly dropped his phone, half- convinced his boss had ears everywhere.

The meeting had reached its critical phase, with overseas business partners joining in via video conference. Originally, Leighton had planned to fly abroad in person for the negotiations, yet he had refused to leave simply because he hated leaving Zora all alone at home, choosing instead to hold virtual talks and even conceded one percentage point in the deal terms.

He had already paused the meeting once and given away another half point. There was no way Tristan dared interrupt him further now.

He shook his head subtly to signal everything was fine, then immediately set about arranging all necessary matters in secret.

Having followed Leighton back from abroad, Tristan was far more capable and sharp-witted than his calm, ordinary surface let on.

Lily was swiftly apprehended on the spot while rummaging through the office files, and the vial of sedatives she had hidden on her was seized without delay.

The doctor who had left not long prior was called back once more, unable to hold back a helpless chuckle at how endless misfortunes kept falling on the young girl. He examined Zora’s condition carefully, administered the antidote medicine, and then took his leave again.

Even after taking the antidote, Zora remained sound asleep, having inhaled a substantial amount of the sedative, and the remedy needed time to fully take effect.

“Tristan, who gave you the nerve to hide this from me!”

Zora stirred awake to hear the sharp, icy reprimand echoing outside.

She flinched involuntarily, opening her eyes to see Leighton standing in the office, his face clouded with cold rage and his eyes sharp and unyielding.

Tristan stood there silently, taking every word of scolding without a single retort.

Leighton had wrapped up the meeting just five minutes earlier.

The moment Tristan reported the entire incident and told him Zora had been exposed to sleeping gas, Leighton’s expression turned terrifyingly icy.

Even knowing the sedative had already been neutralized, his stern mood did not ease in the slightest.

“Leighton…”

Zora climbed out of bed, pulled open the door, and called out to him in a soft voice.

“Zora, are you still feeling unwell anywhere? I’ve already had the doctor check you thoroughly. The sedative has worn off completely, and you won’t face any lasting harm.”

Leighton’s cold, stern features softened the second he heard her voice. He strode quickly toward her, his deep eyes filled only with tender worry.

“It’s all my fault for letting you go through that.”

“I’m all better now.”

After sleeping through the entire afternoon, Zora felt most of her strength return. A dull aching discomfort still lingered low in her abdomen, yet it was bearable.

It was merely her own physical discomfort, having nothing to do with the sedative.

“Don’t scold Tristan, Leighton. I told him not to tell you,” Zora said gently.

She had clearly overheard him scolding his assistant just now.

She had never seen Leighton fly into such a furious temper before, and she actually had a pretty good impression of Tristan.

Tristan shot her a grateful glance.

“I wasn’t scolding him,” Leighton defended himself quietly, thinking his words were nowhere near harsh enough to count as scolding.

“Did you catch that person? Nothing serious happened, right?” Zora asked anxiously.

She was more concerned about the person who had been going through his files.

She knew well enough that stolen confidential company information could lead to irreversible huge losses once it fell into the wrong hands.

Half-asleep earlier, she had vaguely heard Leighton instruct Tristan to arrange for someone to stay and look after her.

That woman had only been able to enter Leighton’s office because of her. If something happened because of that, she wouldn’t be able to rest easy.

“We caught her. Don’t worry, Zora, everything’s fine. I’m done with my work now. Let’s head home. I’ll make you something nice to eat when we get back.”

Seeing she was feeling unwell yet still fretting over everything, Leighton gently ran his broad palm through her soft hair and stroked it tenderly a couple of times.
