Chapter 22 My Mentor Left Not Long Ago
“Absolutely. I’m here for a free dinner,” Chet laughed.
“What were you two talking about? Laughing so loud?” Opal handed her bags to a maid and kicked off her shoes.
“Dear, Zora’s a genius! Chet was quizzing her on medical theory, and she got every answer. We might have another doctor in the family.” Floyd beamed.
“Really? Zora is that talented? I knew she was the best!” Opal praised her immediately, not wanting to discourage the girl.
“If Zora didn’t already have a mentor, I’d take her as my last student. She’s brilliant. You hit the jackpot with this one.”
Chet’s weathered eyes crinkled with unconcealed joy as he stroked his beard, speaking with growing regret.
He couldn’t hide the disappointment in his eyes.
What an exceptional talent-he envied the mentor who had taken Zora in.
From his conversation with Zora, Chet could already tell she was far more than someone with basic medical knowledge; she had clearly been trained by a professional.
For Zora to grasp such profound concepts before reaching adulthood, her future potential was boundless.
“Zora,” he said gently, “what is your mentor’s full name? Could you introduce him to me? I’d love to discuss medical practice with him.”
Chet was eager to meet Zora’s mentor.
At his age, he longed to exchange ideas about medicine with others.
“I don’t know my mentor’s name. He never told me, only let me call him Mentor.
“He left not long ago.”
Zora shook her head. She had never known his name; she had called him Mentor since she first learned to speak.
“He left… Oh, Zora, I didn’t mean to…”
Chet’s eyes softened with sympathy, assuming Zora meant her mentor had passed away.
He quickly apologized, flustered.
“It’s fine.” Zora did not understand why Chet suddenly looked so apologetic.
She had no idea he had misunderstood her.
She had been about to say she would ask him once her mentor returned.

But now, she thought it might not be necessary.
Zora was sharp in many ways, but sometimes she was slow to catch on.
This stemmed from a severe injury she had suffered as a child.
Floyd and Opal’s hearts ached for Zora when they heard her words.
“Mr. Marlow, Mrs. Marlow, Mr. Morgan, the lobsters are almost ready. Mr. Jensen Marlow is also on his way home and will be here any second. We can get ready for dinner soon.”
Paul stepped in to ease the sudden quiet in the room.
“Zora, I’m home.”
Speak of the devil. Jensen walked in, his gaze immediately finding Zora in the living room.
“Grandpa, Grandma, Mr. Morgan.”
Noticing a guest, Jensen greeted them with a smile.
“Jensen, you’re back. It hasn’t been long, but you’ve changed again-far more reliable than my grandson.”
Chet looked at his friend’s grandson with obvious admiration.
“Give Leighton more time, Mr. Morgan.”
Jensen smiled as he spoke of his close friend.
He and Chet’s grandson were good friends.
“Okay.”
“Come on, Chet brought fresh lobster, it’s almost ready. Go wash up and get ready to eat,” Opal said.
“Zora, here you go. I’ll crack these for you.”
Jensen placed a shelled lobster piece onto a plate and handed it to Zora.
“Thanks.”
Zora didn’t like cracking shells herself. Glancing at Jensen, she thanked him politely.
“Lobster is pretty rich, Zora. You just got over a bad illness, so don’t eat too much. Once you’re fully better, I’ll have someone make as much as you want.”
Jensen didn’t give her any more. Kian and the notes had both warned him that Zora had a delicate stomach and shouldn’t eat too much rich, heavy food.
The notes had even underlined it clearly-too much rich food would upset her stomach during her monthly cycle.
“Okay.”

Zora nodded.
“Jensen has learned to take good care of others,” Chet said with a smile, watching the pair.
“Of course he should take good care of his cousin. Zora, if you ever need anything, just ask Jensen, Opal said before Jensen could reply.
The Knox children had been neglectful. Only Holden had called to check in; the other two had not contacted her at all.
As for Jolie’s calls, Opal had refused to answer them.
She was certain Jolie had no good intentions.
“Yes, Zora. If you need anything, just come to me,” Jensen agreed.
If the Knox family could not care for her properly, the Marlows would.
Chet sensed a subtle shift in the atmosphere and did not press further.
“Wait a second.”
After dinner, it was still early. Floyd and Opal had gone out for a walk together.
Zora called out to Jensen, who was heading upstairs to his study.
“Zora, what do you need?”
Jensen had an international meeting scheduled, but when he heard Zora call out to him for the first time. his heart leaped with joy.
Meetings could wait-nothing was more important than talking to her.
