A new message popped up on her phone. Zora split the screen to check it. It was from Maya, âZora, school starts tomorrow. Is there anything you want to eat? Iâll go buy ingredients this afternoon.â
A soft smile spread across Zoraâs face when she saw the message. She tapped her screen to reply, âI want tapioca pudding.â
âGot it.â
âMaya, isnât your monthly visiting day coming up soon?â
Zora suddenly thought of Mayaâs sick mother.
Her monthly visiting time was almost due, right around October 1st.
School started tomorrow, and the holiday would arrive just one week after classes began.
Zora didnât know the exact date of her visit.
âYeah, next Saturday.â
âAlright, Iâll go with you to see your mom that day.â
Zora made a mental note of the date.
Maya had always been really kind to her, and she wanted to see if there was anything she could do to help Mayaâs mother.
Zora chatted casually with Maya while wearing headphones and watching a show.
Suddenly, footsteps came from behind her, followed by a sharp, rushing motion.
âLook out!â someone shouted from the side.
A sharp pain exploded across Zoraâs cheek. Her mind went blank. She stumbled backward and fell hard on the ground. Her headphones slipped off and shattered into pieces on the floor.
Zora sat frozen on the ground. A loud ringing buzzed in her ears, and her cheek stung fiercely.
âZora!â Killian rushed over instantly. He bent down and gently helped her stand up.
Zora was still dazed and confused.
âZora⊠Are you hurt anywhere?â
Killian stared at her anxiously, his eyes full of worry. âShould I get a doctor for you?â

Zoraâs eyes burned with tears. She blinked hard, clearing her foggy mind. The stinging train on her cheek felt vivid and sharp.
She pinched her palm tightly, forcing back her emotions. Her throat felt tight and dry, and her voice came out hoarse and weak. âT⊠thank youâŠâ
âZora, let me take you to see a doctor first, okay?â
A faint anger flashed in Killianâs deep eyes, underneath all his concern.
Heâd only stepped outside to get some fresh air, and heâd stumbled right onto this scene.
The second he saw someone slap Zora, uncontrollable fury welled up in his chest.
Zora used Killianâs support to steady herself. Her face was pale, and one side of her cheek was visibly red and swollen. The injury looked shocking.
âIâm fineâŠâ Zora said in a rough, hoarse voice.
She calmed her emotions and turned to look at Wendy, who stood frozen not far away.
âWendy, do you really think I wonât fight back?!â
Zora pushed Killianâs hand away and walked slowly toward the stunned woman.
Wendyâs feet felt glued to the ground, trapped by Killianâs cold, piercing stare. She had no idea how to react.
She had never seen this man before. She couldnât believe Zora had hooked up with another powerful person.
Killianâs gaze sent a chill down her spine, making her feel like she would regret that slap for the rest of her life.
As Zora walked closer step by step, Wendy met her cold, empty eyes, and real fear finally sank in. She couldnât help but step backward.
âZora⊠donât you dare hit me!â
She kept retreating, forcing toughness into her voice despite her growing fear.
She was Zoraâs mother. What was wrong with slapping her once?
Her whole family had fallen apart because of Zora. Everyone was mocking and blaming them. So why did this troublemaker get to live so well, spoiled and loved by everyone?
Wendy was filled with embarrassment and bitter jealousy.

She had watched a video of Zora the night before. For the first time, she saw how outstanding Zora could be-nothing like the useless child the Knox family had always thought her to be.
In the video, Zora shined brightly, doing what she loved most. She looked confident, gorgeous, and radiant.
She was nothing like the quiet, overlooked girl sheâd been at the Knox Villa.
The comment section was full of people praising her nonstop.
Yet Wendy, her own mother, got none of that light.
Because she had never raised her, never cared for her.
Meanwhile, Jolie, the daughter sheâd raised with all her effort, kept making reckless mistakes and dragging her into endless humiliation.
Wendy couldnât stand such a huge gap.
Her husbandâs constant criticism, her sonsâ complaints, Jolieâs ruined reputation, her parentsâ coldness, and the endless humiliation at the banquet-all these things piled up on her.
Spoiled and sheltered her whole life, Wendy couldnât take the pressure anymore. She was on the verge of a breakdown and desperately needed an outlet for her rage.
When she saw Zora at the banquet today, shining brighter than anyone else in the room, untouchable and adored, Wendy completely lost her mind.
Impulse took over. Sheâd followed Zora out when she saw her leave alone.
The garden was empty and quiet. No one was here to protect her this time.
Zora had her back turned, laughing softly while chatting on her phone with someone.
A surge of anger burned through Wendy. A reckless, thrilling urge washed over her as she crept closer, knowing Zora had no idea she was there.
