Seeing Zora’s back facing her, Wendy gave in to the dark impulse in her heart. She took the chance, stepped forward, and slapped her hard across the face.
The moment her palm landed on Zora’s cheek, Wendy felt an inexplicable rush of relief and satisfaction.
It was all her fault. Zora had ruined her entire family.
Wendy truly believed Zora would never dare fight back against her.
Hitting her own daughter was not wrong. If Zora retaliated, she would be branded unfilial and condemned by everyone.
“This is the third time, Wendy. You’ve tried to hit me three times. You finally got your shot today, didn’t you?”
Zora ignored the soreness in her tailbone from falling. She stepped forward quickly and slapped Wendy right across the face.
Her face was cold, with no emotion in sight.
Zora had tolerated the first two attempts. Yet Wendy kept pushing her limits, refusing to stop.
Zora had never been the type to endure bullying silently. She had always fought back when Jolie picked on her.
The only reason she’d held back against Wendy before was out of respect for Opal and Floyd.
She had let Wendy hurt her over and over again, but she would not take it anymore.
“Ah!” Wendy let out a sharp scream.
She was wearing high heels. Her ankle twisted badly, and she tumbled straight to the ground.
Agony shot through her foot, mixing with the burning pain on her cheek. Blood rushed to her head. Her eyes widened in shock as she covered her face, staring up at Zora in disbelief.
“How dare you hit me! Zora! I gave birth to you! How could you dare hit your own mother!”
Wendy’s features twisted with rage. She struggled to push herself up, ready to lunge straight at Zora, burning with fury.
She could not believe it. Where did Zora get the guts to hit her?!
Killian stepped forward in an instant, blocking Zora. “Zora!”

Inside the banquet hall, Leighton was stuck in a conversation with other guests. A strange sense of unease pricked at him nonstop.
Zora was gone. And so was Wendy.
Leighton rushed out. He grabbed Wendy’s arm and tossed her aside roughly.
Wendy’s body crashed onto the ground. Her long dress did nothing to protect her. Her arms scraped hard against the ground, leaving bleeding scratches all over her skin.
“Ah!”
Jensen and the others arrived right after. They froze at the chaotic scene, their chests tightening with anger.
Holden and Anton, who followed closely behind, felt their blood boil with rage.
They never thought Wendy would dare provoke Zora again.
They had warned her countless times to leave Zora alone. Yet the second their eyes were off her, she went after Zora once more.
Last time, her actions had forced Zora to leave the Marlow family. Jensen had already taught the Knox family a harsh lesson.
Now she had gone even further and laid a hand on Zora. No one could bear to look at the furious expressions on the Marlow and Morgan family members’ faces.
“Zora… are you hurt? Let me see.”

Leighton walked straight to Zora. His gaze locked onto her swollen cheek, and a ruthless, bloodthirsty glint flashed in his eyes.
“Leighton…” The second she saw Leighton, Zora’s eyes turned red.
“I’m here. I’m so sorry I’m late.”
Seeing her teary eyes, Leighton pulled her gently into his arms and patted her back softly to soothe her.
Killian watched them, his lips pressing into a thin line. A sour, bitter feeling spread through his chest. He stepped aside quietly and left without a word.
The faint, cool scent of mint surrounded her. Zora’s nose burned. “Leighton…”
“Zora!”
Wendy’s whole body throbbed with pain. She forced herself up. Seeing the fresh scratches on

She knew full well Leighton was the one who tossed her down, but she only dared to yell and blame Zora.
She could only bully Zora, and she dumped all her hatred and resentment on her.
The shrill voice pierced through the air. Zora’s chest tightened. She bit her tongue hard, holding back the grievance welling up inside her.
She would never show weakness in front of Wendy.
Zora gently pushed Leighton away. Her slender figure stood straight. Her clear eyes were filled with anger.
“You dared to hit me first. Why can’t I hit you back?”
She looked frail, yet there was not a trace of cowardice in her stance. Her gaze was cold and unforgiving as she stared at Wendy, who sat seething on the ground.
A faint mocking smile tugged at her lips.
This woman was her nominal mother, yet she hated her with every fiber of her being.
“Mom! What are you doing!”
Holden and Anton ran over quickly and helped Wendy up from the ground.
Wendy ignored them. Her eyes were wild and full of hatred, fixed firmly on Zora, as if she wanted to tear her apart piece by piece.
“I’m your mother! I’m allowed to hit you! No one has the right to judge me!”
“Allowed?” Leighton’s eyes turned pitch dark and cold. A sharp, intimidating smile curved his lips.
“So it would only be fair if I bankrupt the Knox family?”
“You wouldn’t dare!” Wendy’s face twisted with rage, her lips trembling.
Anton and Holden spoke quickly in panic, “Mom, stop talking!”
