Chapter 285 Poison

“Zora, wait for me here. I’ll go in first.”

:

Maya had picked the visit time carefully, when her mother’s condition stayed stable.

But she did not dare take any chances when Zora was involved.

“Okay.” Zora nodded obediently.

Maya pushed open the ward door and walked in. “Mom.”

She spoke softly and placed her bouquet of baby’s breath on the cabinet.

The cold, plain room felt less lifeless with the blue flowers.

On the hospital bed, the woman held a cloth doll in her arms and patted its back gently.

“Don’t be scared. Don’t be scared, Maya. Your dad will be home soon. When he comes back, our family of three will be together again.

“Sleep tight, my sweet baby…

“Maya, my Maya. Mom will always stay with you.”

The woman’s long hair fell over her shoulders. She rested her head on the doll, half of her thin face exposed.

It was clear she had been beautiful in her youth.

But her eyes were blank and unfocused. She mumbled broken sentences nonstop.

“Mom,” Maya squatted down in front of her and called softly.

The curled-up woman on the bed moved her dull eyes. Her scattered gaze slowly settled on Maya’s face.

“Ma… Maya… My daughter… My little girl…”

The woman stretched out her pale, bony hands to touch Maya’s face.

Maya never missed a single visiting hour over the years. Even with her poor memory, the woman still remembered her name.

“Mom, it’s me.”

Maya let her mother’s hands rest on her cheek and nodded.

“Mom, my friend came to see you. We’ll stay calm today. I’ll give you candy later, okay?”

Maya talked to her gently and pulled a marshmallow out of her bag.

“Candy… Candy…”

The woman’s eyes lit up at the sight of the candy and reached out for it. Maya handed it to her.

She grabbed the candy quickly and held it to the doll’s mouth.

“Candy… Sweet candy… My baby, eat this. Don’t cry anymore,” Kimberly Cole coaxed the doll softly.

Maya pressed her lips together. Even without her full senses, Kimberly still loved her deeply.

Seeing her full attention on the doll, Maya stood up and opened the ward door.

“Zora, my mom’s condition is unstable. She’s only lucid like this for a short while. Let’s take a quick look and leave.”

“Alright.”

Zora stepped into the ward. Her eyes fell on the woman on the bed.

The woman was extremely thin. Dry, yellow hair fell messily over her shoulders. Her eyes were hollow and her face gaunt.

Still, she could tell she was Maya’s mother from their facial features.

Their eyes did not look alike. Maya must have gotten her eyes from her father.

“Hello, Mrs. Cole,” Zora greeted in a soft voice.

Kimberly stayed trapped in her own world and gave no response.

“She can’t respond to anyone else. She only recognizes me. The doctors said she suffers from severe mental disorder,” Maya explained.

“Can I check her pulse?” Zora asked.

“Of course.”

Zora handed the sunflower to Maya, walked forward quietly, and approached Kimberly.

Kimberly was still busy feeding candy to the doll and did not react to Zora’s approach at all.

Zora had observed other mental patients on the way here. Their conditions looked nothing like Kimberly’s.

She placed her fingers lightly on Kimberly’s wrist to feel her pulse.

Her brows drew tight at once.

“Zora, it’s fine if you can’t figure it out,” Maya comforted her.

No treatment had worked for over a decade, so she held no high hopes.

“Maya, Mrs. Cole doesn’t have a mental disorder. It looks like… poisoning.”

Zora turned to look at Maya.

Maya froze in shock.

Poisoning?

“I saw other patients in the wards earlier. They looked simply dull, sometimes manic, sometimes depressed. But your mom is different. Her eyes are hollow and unfocused. Her hands shake slightly if you look closely, and her pupils turn blank at times.

“Like you said, she acts frantic sometimes, with bloodshot eyes.

“This is nothing like standard mental illness.” Zora frowned.

“What kind of poison is it?”

Maya took a deep breath. She didn’t doubt Zora’s judgment for a second.

Have all our treatments been wrong all these years?

No wonder her mother never got better.

2

She never thought something like deliberate poisoning could happen in real life.

“It’s Heart Corroding Poison. This poison slowly eats away at a person’s sanity. At first, it clouds the mind and weakens memory. People forget things immediately after they happen.

“Without an antidote for a long time, the victim loses rationality, turns manic, and suffers constant headaches. They lose self-control, lash out, break things, and try to destroy everything around them.

“If the antidote is never taken, they lose all sense completely in the end. They become unresponsive and trapped forever in their own isolated world.”
