Chapter 31 A Lamb Doll

‘Hmph, you’re finally acting like a decent-cousin, knowing to get Zora a gift.”

Opal had also caught the faint smile on Zora’s face, and her heart ached with pity all the more. Zora was so easily satisfied by such small things.

ust how badly had the Knox family neglected her all these years?

‘Zora, if you like it, I’ll bring you more next time,” Jensen said, delighted that she’d taken to his gift.

Seeing the smile on her face filled his own heart with warmth

n that moment, he finally understood why brothers with little sisters never stopped bringing them little >resents no matter where they went, talking about them at every turn.

Now that he had Zora, he got it completely.

ensen wanted nothing more than to lay every good thing in the world at Zora’s feet, just to coax another mile from her.

Thank you.” Zora lifted her gaze to meet his eyes, speaking softly with genuine sincerity.

There was a soft, gentle warmth creeping into her usually calm, reserved eyes.

After the three finished dinner, Zora headed back to her room to make herbal pills.

Opal was in decent health now, but getting angry too often could easily lead to physical problems.

Zora planned to make a batch of vitality pills for Opal,

Jensen…”

Zora looked at Jensen, who was walking up the stairs beside her. She pursed her lips before calling out to

nim.

‘Hmm?”

Jensen glanced over at her, surprise and quiet delight flickering in his gentle eyes.

He’d never expected her to call him first.

She’d been staying at the Marlow Manor for days and had never once called his name.

Hearing it now caught him completely off guard, filling him with quiet excitement.

He suddenly felt the urge to rush straight to his study and plow through the mountain of pending paperwork.

He was brimming with energy!

“Why did you get me the little lamb doll?”

Zora still held the plush lamb tight in her arms, never setting it down except during meals. It was clear she cherished it deeply.

“You gave me that herbal sachet before; so it was only right that I get you a gift in return.

“More than that, though, I saw this lamb and just knew you’d love it–that’s why I bought it for you.”

Jensen paused for a second, caught off guard by her question, then smiled and answered gently.

He’d never spent much time around girls, but he’d heard friends say girls adored cute little trinkets. Zora was a girl, too, so he figured she’d be no different.

“I love it so much. Thank you, Jensen.”

Zora’s heart softened at his words-he’d bought it simply because he’d thought she would like it.

She hugged the plush lamb even tighter to her chest.

Her cousin from the Marlow family was so kind.

“No need to thank me, Zora. I told you before-I’ll take good care of you from now on.”

Jensen looked at the quiet, soft-spoken girl beside him. His palms itched slightly as he stared down at the top of her soft-haired head, then hesitantly reached out and ruffled her hair lightly.

The feel was utterly wonderful, almost addictive.

A strong urge to protect her welled up inside Jensen.

His voice was warm and steady, brimming with quiet reassurance.

He would never let Zora get hurt ever again.

Feeling the gentle ruffle on top of her head, Zora looked up at him and made no move to pull away.

“Goodnight, Zora. Get some rest early.”

Jensen noticed the subtle shift in her demeanor, a quiet smile playing on his lips.

The little hedgehog was slowly lowering her thorns.

“Mm, you too,” Zora replied softly.

The two parted ways.

Jensen headed upstairs to tackle his work, while Zora returned to her bedroom.

Once inside her room, Zora wandered around, trying to pick the perfect spot for her lamb doll.

Putting it on the bed worried her she’d roll over and crush it.

Setting it on the sofa felt too far away; she wouldn’t be able to see it easily, and she wanted the lamb close

Leaving it on the floor felt wrong too-she couldn’t bear the thought of it being all alone down there.

The desk didn’t seem right either, too out of reach for her.

After pacing the room for a while, Zora ally placed the plush lamb on her nightstand. It was close enough that she could see it with a simple turn of her head and reach out to touch it anytime she wanted.

She lay down on the bed, stretching out a hand to test the distance, and nodded in quiet satisfaction.

Satisfied, she settled back down.

Staring at the lamb keeping her company on the nightstand, she wore a faint, bright smile.

Her round, clear doe eyes sparkled with unspoken joy.

Gone was her usual cold detachment, her indifference toward everything around her.

It had been so long since Zora had felt genuine happiness.

But today, a small, warm joy bloomed in her heart.

She’d been showered with someone’s care and affection, and gifted a precious little present.

Pushing down the fluttering emotions in her chest, Zora tucked the lamb doll safely in place. Then she dragged her suitcase out from under the bed, opened it and lifted out her small herbal cabinet before stepping out onto the balcony.

Unlocking the cabinet, she skillfully took out various herbs, placed them in a small mortar, and began grinding them slowly with a pestle, her expression/focused and earnest.

Zora spent the next two days peacefully staying at the Marlow Manor.

With school starting back up the next day, she got up in the morning and headed to the balcony to check on the herbal pills she’d left to dry in the air.

Once she confirmed they were fully cured, she carefully placed them all into a ceramic jar.
