Leighton nodded in reply.

After Kian left, Leighton walked over to the bed. Zora’s face still looked pale as she lay there.

Her lips were dry. He picked up the water cup from the nightstand, dipped a cotton swab in the water, and gently moistened her lips.

He brushed his hand against her cheek. Her skin still felt cold.

His eyes held tenderness and pity.

It was the Eighteen Meridian Technique. Most people never mastered this skill in their whole life. She had learned it before she even came of age. She had saved Floyd with it, yet now she lay here, worn thin and weak.

Leighton knew all about this special acupuncture method. His grandfather had told him before that it drained every bit of energy. One small mistake could leave the practitioner sick and exhausted for days.

Zora had always been in poor health. She needed plenty of rest and calm. She had worked nonstop for six hours straight. Hundreds of needles were used, each one needing perfect placement. Most people would grow dizzy just watching, but she could not afford a single error.

Zora slept for a very long time, and Leighton stayed right by her side the whole while.

She finally woke up as evening came. Soft warm light filled the room. She lifted her heavy eyelids and stared at the familiar ceiling, feeling dazed and confused about the time.

“You’re awake?”

A calm voice reached her ears.

Zora turned her head. Her neck ached badly, and she winced. Bending over for six hours had left her muscles stiff and sore.

She tried to sit up, but her whole body felt drained. She reached to pull the covers aside, yet her hands felt too weak to move.

Every bone and muscle in her body ached. She rolled her eyes toward the doorway.

Leighton walked in, holding a bowl. His expression looked grim, his eyes stern.

“Leighton…”

Seeing his sharp look made her head spin. She pouted softly.

She felt terrible all over, and grew clingy and weak.

The moment he saw her pout and heard her quiet voice, Leighton’s tough expression faded. Pity filled his eyes. He hurried over to the bed.

“Does anything still hurt? Let me check.”

He set the bowl of fragrant chicken soup on the nightstand, then leaned down to help her sit up and lean against his chest.

“I feel terrible.”

Zora tried to move her hands out from under the covers, but they felt limp. She had no strength at all.

She knew this was just an aftereffect of the long acupuncture work. She wouldn’t carry heavy things or do hard work for quite a while.

“Tell me where it hurts. I’ll call a doctor right away.”

Her helpless tone tugged at his heart. Worry clouded his face, and he reached for his phone.

“My arms are sore and weak. My head throbs and I feel dizzy. My neck hurts too. My throat feels dry and I want some water. I feel completely worn out.”

She spoke in a soft, whiny voice. They were close enough that she didn’t hold back.

Leighton listened to her list of discomforts and tapped her forehead lightly with one finger.

“You know how bad it feels now, don’t you?”

“Hey, you just tapped me.”

She could not move much, so she only rolled her eyes to glare at him. The look held no real anger, just playful complaint. Her voice sounded soft from disuse.

“Drink your soup first. I’ll get the doctor to check you afterward.”

He glanced at her pitiful look and picked up the chicken soup. He blew on the spoon to cool the food down before holding it to her mouth.

“It’s too hot.”

Zora’s lips touched the warm soup and pulled back.

Leighton blew on it again gently. This time the temperature was fine, and she drank it down.

When she was sick, Zora grew lazy and soft, not wanting to do a single thing.

“Is there no meat?”

She leaned against him and peeked into the bowl. All she saw was soup, no meat at all.

Leighton scooped up another spoonful and fed her. “You still want meat? You pushed your body to the limit and now you’re asking for treats?”

He had spent nearly two months helping her put on healthy weight, but all that progress was lost after this ordeal. Color still had not returned to her face.

“I need meat right now. I have to eat more to get my energy and strength back,” Zora said in a serious tone.

“No meat for you,” Leighton replied simply.

Zora stared at him in surprise. She could not believe he would be so strict when she felt so terrible. She struggled to sit up, planning to grab her phone.

“I’ll call Grandma. I’m going home to rest and get better with Grandpa.”

Floyd had also gone through a lot. Opal would surely make all kinds of nourishing food for him. She wanted to go home and eat well with them.

“Finish your soup first, and you’ll get some meat later.”
