Chapter 316 A Quiet Meal

Floyd’s voice sounded warm and kind.

“Alright,” Zora replied.

After talking to the Marlows, Zora sent messages back to Maya and Hallie. Her hands were too weak to make calls, so she used voice notes instead.

Maya had filled the chat box with worried messages. Zora kept saying she was fine, and finally talked her out of starting a video call.

A video call would give everything away right away. She could feel how weak her body was, and she knew her face still looked terrible.

“Even feeling this worn out, you still check on all your friends,” Leighton said as he walked in with a tray of food.

He watched her stretch out one finger slowly to tap her phone and comfort the girls on the other end.

“If you’d taken any longer, I would’ve starved to death.”

Zora finished replying to the messages. She leaned her head against the nightstand, looking tired. Her eyes fixed eagerly on the food tray in Leighton’s hands.

“Starve then. I’d have one less thing to worry about.”

Leighton set the tray down. On it were a bowl of oatmeal, a small plate of herb-roasted chicken, and a bowl of chicken soup.

Seeing the meat, Zora looked pleased.

Leighton pulled up a chair beside the bed, picked up the oatmeal and started feeding her.

“I can do it myself,” Zora said. She suddenly felt shy. She had been too groggy to think much when she first woke up, but now her mind was clear. It felt awkward having someone feed her like this.

“Do you have enough strength?”

Leighton glanced at her bandaged left hand, then her limp right hand. Neither looked strong enough to hold a spoon.

“I guess not,” Zora admitted after testing her arms. “Can you get me a thick straw instead?”

“No straws. Just eat,” Leighton said with a faint smile. He held the spoon to her mouth, his tone relaxed. “I’m taking care of you now. When I need help someday, I know you won’t turn me

He found it funny that she tried to think of a shortcut with a straw instead of simply letting him help.

“You’re still young. You’ve got plenty of years ahead. Don’t worry. When you grow old, I’ll take good care of you,” Zora said.

She thought about his joke about needing huge sums of money to support him later. He was healthy and full of energy, so she figured he would outlive her for sure. She probably would never get the chance to look after him in his old age.

“Hmm.” Leighton saw her eyes dart around, knowing she was lost in silly thoughts. He chose not to tease her about it. He already had her promise, and they could deal with the rest later.

“Thank you.”

The rich smell of the oatmeal drifted over. Zora could not resist and ate from the spoon.

“I want some meat too.” Her gaze stayed locked on the tasty cooked chicken. It looked like farm-raised chicken, with firm meat and golden skin. It smelled amazing.

Leighton picked up a piece and fed it to her.

“Have you eaten yet?” Zora chewed the chicken and looked up at him.

“Not yet.” Leighton had stayed by her side the whole day. He had not felt like eating at all.

“You haven’t had a single meal? It’s so late now.” Zora was surprised.

“I’ve been too busy worrying about you to feel hungry.” He scooped more oatmeal and held it to her mouth.

“You should eat something too,” Zora told him.

Leighton’s hand paused for a second. His eyes met hers, soft with concern.

Zora blinked, confused by his look. Havel said something wrong?

“What’s wrong?” She only spoke out of worry for him.

“Nothing.” Leighton took a spoonful of oatmeal, then scooped some more for her.

“More meat, please.” Zora was extremely hungry and craved more chicken.

“Finish your oatmeal first, then you can have more meat,” Leighton said gently.

Zora did as she was told. Leighton’s gaze lingered on her lips for a moment before he looked

away and fed her another piece of chicken.

They shared the small bowl of oatmeal together. Every time Zora took a bite of oatmeal, Leighton would give her a piece of meat.

When they finished eating, Zora suddenly noticed they had been using the same spoon. She remembered there was another spoon. She knew Leighton disliked sharing utensils with others, so she had expected him to grab a new one.

But there was only one spoon in his hand. She wondered where the other one had gone.
