Maya’s face stayed totally calm, but she squeezed her hands so tight her knuckles turned white.

“I need to think about it.”

She’d never met her dad a single time in her life.

Her mom has suffered from poor mental health ever since she was a child.

All the neighbors said it was all her dad’s fault.

No one could handle their husband vanishing out of the blue when they were heavily pregnant and about to give birth.

Everyone around town said that man had abandoned her mom and her.

They claimed he’d just played with her mom’s feelings and left without a second thought.

He never showed up again for years and years.

Maya never had time to think about him anyway. She was always busy with school, taking care of her mom, and working part-time to pay her mom’s huge medical bills.

She’d long acted like her dad was dead.

She’d never thought something terrible might’ve happened to him too.

After hearing everything Zora said, Maya’s mind felt all messed up.

If he really was part of that dangerous group, if he was trapped there… if he couldn’t come back, not that he didn’t want to…

Maya had no clue how she should feel.

She’d hated him for so long.

She’d wished he were dead, wished he were suffering badly somewhere.

Why did he get to disappear and live easy, while her mom’s whole life got ruined?

Why did only she and her mom have to go through all that pain?

But now, everything lined up with what she’d always guessed.

She’d heard he’d lost one finger.

She’d heard his body was covered in scars.

She’d heard he’d lost his memory. The only name he’d mumble over and over was Kimberly- her mom’s name.

Back when her mom was doing okay mentally, she’d hold Maya at night and talk about her dad.

She said Maya had the exact same eyes as him.

Whenever her mom had a breakdown, she’d stare right at Maya’s eyes, touch them gently, then break down crying and screaming.

“Why do your eyes look just like his?! Why?!”

Maya could always feel her mom’s pain and hatred toward those eyes.

That’s why she’d gotten bangs and started wearing those big, plain black glasses.

The glasses covered most of her eyes, hiding the similarity between her and her dad.

She’d also heard he was a super skilled hacker.

Maya suddenly remembered the old books she’d found hidden in her family’s study as a kid.

Those books were where she’d learned all her hacking skills from.

All these little clues piled up in her head, leaving her with a weird, tangled feeling.

A tiny part of her felt satisfied he’d suffered, but she didn’t feel happy at all.

There was zero joy in her heart.

“Take all the time you need,” Zora said softly. “If you ever want to meet him, just tell me anytime.”

“Huh? Aren’t we going home?” Zora asked, confused.

She got in the car and quickly noticed they weren’t heading for Aria Estates.

“Ms. Hale, Mr. Pierce has a work dinner tonight,” Noreen said from the front passenger seat.

“He won’t make it home in time to cook for you, so he sent us to bring you to eat with him.

“He said their signature roast duck is really good.”

It was an important dinner for Leighton, so he couldn’t leave early.

But he was worried Zora would skip meals if she stayed home alone, so he’d arranged for her to

come over.

“Oh, okay.”

Zora originally planned to say she could just eat alone at home.

But the second she heard about the tasty food, her eyes lit up.

Work dinners always had great food. She definitely wasn’t passing that up.

The car drove smoothly all the way to the restaurant.

As soon as they stepped out of the car, Tristan was waiting downstairs for her.

“Ms. Hale, Mr. Pierce asked me to take you up.”

Tristan walked over to her.

Zora followed him into the elevator.

“Don’t be nervous, Ms. Hale,” Tristan said with a kind smile.

“Just eat and relax in the private room. You don’t have to do anything else.”

“Okay.”

Zora nodded obediently.

The private room was just a short walk from the elevator.

Į

A server knocked softly on the door, then pushed it open after getting permission.

Only three people were inside the room.

Leighton was there, plus a fit middle-aged man in his forties wearing a nice suit.

He had sharp, handsome features—people could tell he’d been super good-looking when he was younger.

Another man, who seemed to be his assistant, stood beside him.

They’d been talking, but everyone went quiet the second Zora showed up at the door.

All heads turned to look at her.

The middle-aged man, Sam Sowell, looked totally shocked when he saw Zora’s face.

“Zora.”

Leighton waved her over gently.

Zora walked over and stood right next to him.

“Zora, this is Mr. Sowell,” Leighton introduced.

“Mr. Sowell, this is Zora.”

“Hello, Mr. Sowell.”

:

Zora greeted him politely, noticing he was stunned.

Sam quickly hid the shock in his eyes after hearing the introduction.

“Hello. What a beautiful girl.

“No wonder you hate leaving her at home alone, Mr. Pierce. I’d never feel at ease either if I had such a sweet little sister.”
